The United Kingdom government has subscribed approximately KES 1.94 billion (US$15 million) to Kenyan supermarket chain Quickmart’s initial public offering (IPO) through its MOBILIST investment programme. The planned holding represents about 6.5% of Quickmart’s issued shares, with the final allotment still subject to the offer process. The transaction adds a second major international institution to a KES 15 billion share sale, but the proceeds will go to Quickmart’s existing shareholder rather than the retailer itself.
Key Overview
- UK investment: Approximately KES 1.94 billion for a prospective 6.5% stake in Quickmart.

- Offer timetable: Applications close on October 30, with NSE trading scheduled for November 12, 2026.
- 2025 performance: Revenue reached KES 50.43 billion and net profit stood at approximately KES 1.51 billion.
UK Government Subscribes for 6.5% of Quickmart
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), through MOBILIST, has subscribed for US$15 million in shares, equivalent to around KES 1.94 billion, in Quickmart’s ongoing IPO. Reports indicate the subscription covers approximately 260 million shares, equal to 13% of the two billion shares being offered and 6.5% of the retailer’s four billion issued shares.
The investment has been announced as a subscription, not a completed transfer of ownership. Actual share allocation will follow the IPO’s terms and timetable.
MOBILIST uses UK public investment and technical support to attract private capital into companies and investment products accessing stock exchanges in emerging markets. Its 2024 partnership with Kenya’s securities market was designed to support new listings and broaden funding opportunities for businesses.
IFC Joins as a Conditional Cornerstone Investor
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank Group’s private-sector investment arm, has also conditionally committed up to US$15 million, approximately KES 1.94 billion. The official IPO announcement specifies that IFC’s participation still requires its board’s approval and is not an investment recommendation or guarantee.
If both institutions receive their proposed allocations in full, they would collectively hold approximately 13% of Quickmart’s shares, representing roughly 26% of the base IPO shares. Their participation may broaden institutional ownership, but it does not eliminate share-price, earnings or dividend risks for other investors.

Who Receives the KES 15 Billion IPO Proceeds?
Quickmart’s offer comprises two billion existing ordinary shares at KES 7.50 per share, representing half its issued share capital. This implies a KES 30 billion equity valuation at the offer price.
Crucially, the share sale is a partial exit for existing owners, conducted through Sokoni Retail Kenya Limited. Its underlying investors include Adenia Partners, Quickmart’s founding Kinuthia family, Tumaini Supermarkets’ founders and Chief Executive Peter Kang’iri.
Quickmart will not receive the KES 15 billion gross proceeds, because it is not issuing new shares. The selling shareholder is expected to receive approximately KES 14.4 billion after offer expenses if the base offer is fully subscribed. The retailer expects to fund future store expansion primarily from cash generated by operations.
The sale requires valid subscriptions covering at least 75% of the two billion shares, unless the offer terms are formally changed. The final approved announcement also confirms there is no over-allotment option.
Quickmart’s Profit Growth and Dividend Policy
Quickmart operates 72 stores across 16 Kenyan counties. For the financial year ended December 2025, its reported net profit increased 33% to approximately KES 1.51 billion, while revenue rose to KES 50.43 billion.
The supermarket paid KES 1.65 billion in dividends, or about 109% of reported annual profit. This is a notable distinction for prospective shareholders: distributions above annual earnings can be supported by available cash, but their sustainability depends on future cash flows, working capital needs and investment spending.
Quickmart’s post-listing dividend targets include paying at least 80% of profits in later years. These remain targets, not guaranteed returns, and any payment depends on the board’s decisions and financial conditions.
IPO Dates and What Investors Should Watch
The offer opened on October 5 and is scheduled to close at 5 p.m. East Africa Time on October 30, 2026. Results are expected on November 6, with trading on the Nairobi Securities Exchange planned for November 12, subject to the final timetable.
The UK’s subscription highlights growing institutional interest in Kenya’s public markets. Nevertheless, investors need to distinguish new institutional share ownership from new funding for the retailer, assess the KES 7.50 offer price against Quickmart’s profits and cash generation, and consider competitive pressures in Kenya’s supermarket industry.
