Microsoft Signs Major Denmark Carbon Removal Deal

Microsoft signs major carbon removal agreement in Denmark to support climate goals
Share

Microsoft has signed a seven-year agreement with Danish renewable energy company BioCirc to purchase up to 650,000 tons of carbon removal credits generated through bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS) projects in Denmark.

The deal marks Microsoft’s first major carbon removal purchase since reports emerged that the company was slowing parts of its carbon credit procurement program amid broader reassessments of climate spending and AI-driven energy growth.

The agreement also reinforces Microsoft’s dominant position within the global carbon removal market, where the company has become the largest buyer of durable carbon removal credits worldwide.

Key Overview

  • Microsoft signed a seven-year carbon removal deal with BioCirc
  • The agreement covers up to 650,000 tons of carbon removal credits
  • BioCirc will deliver 100,000 carbon removal units annually
  • The credits will come from BECCS projects in Denmark
  • Deliveries are expected to begin in the second half of 2026
  • Microsoft remains the world’s largest buyer of carbon removal credits
  • The project involves permanent geological storage beneath the Danish North Sea
  • The agreement supports Microsoft’s carbon negative target by 2030

Microsoft Expands Carbon Removal Portfolio

Microsoft has signed a major long-term carbon removal agreement with BioCirc as the technology giant continues expanding its climate strategy and durable carbon removal portfolio.

Under the seven-year agreement, Microsoft will purchase credits representing up to 650,000 tons of carbon removal generated through BioCirc’s bioenergy carbon capture and storage platform in Denmark.

The agreement will see BioCirc deliver approximately 100,000 carbon removal units annually to Microsoft through 2032.

Each carbon removal unit represents one metric ton of carbon dioxide that has been permanently removed from the atmosphere and securely stored in geological formations beneath the Danish North Sea.

Initial deliveries are expected to begin during the second half of 2026.

Analysts say the agreement highlights growing interest in durable carbon removal technologies capable of permanently storing captured carbon emissions rather than relying on temporary offsets.

The deal also reinforces the increasingly important role major technology companies are playing in scaling global carbon removal markets.

Deal Centers on Bioenergy Carbon Capture Technology

The agreement is based on bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS), a technology that combines renewable bioenergy production with carbon capture and permanent underground storage.

Under the project, carbon dioxide generated from five of BioCirc’s industrial-scale biogas plants in Denmark will be captured and permanently stored beneath the North Sea.

BioCirc, launched in 2021, is one of the world’s largest biomethane producers and currently operates eight industrial-scale biogas plants with annual production capacity exceeding 175 million cubic meters.

The company also produces renewable electricity linked to some of its biogas operations.

Analysts say BECCS is increasingly viewed as one of the most promising pathways for achieving negative emissions because it combines renewable energy generation with long-term carbon removal.

The technology is expected to play an important role in helping companies and governments offset residual emissions that remain difficult to eliminate through direct emissions reductions alone.

Microsoft Resumes Major Carbon Removal Purchases

The BioCirc agreement is particularly significant because it comes shortly after reports suggested Microsoft had slowed aspects of its carbon removal purchasing activity.

Last month, reports indicated that Microsoft informed some carbon credit suppliers that it was pausing portions of its carbon removal procurement program.

However, Microsoft Chief Sustainability Officer Melanie Nakagawa later clarified that the company’s carbon removal strategy had not ended, although procurement pace and volume could be adjusted over time.

The BioCirc agreement therefore signals that Microsoft remains actively engaged in the durable carbon removal market despite recent uncertainty.

Analysts note that Microsoft’s participation is especially important because the company has effectively become the dominant buyer within the global carbon removal sector.

According to carbon removals platform CDR.fyi, Microsoft accounted for approximately 90% of the carbon removal market in 2025 and 78.5% of all disclosed contracted durable carbon removals globally as of April 2026.

The company reportedly signed agreements covering a record 45 million metric tons of CO2 removals in 2025 alone, roughly double its 2024 volume.

Carbon Removal Market Depends Heavily on Microsoft

Analysts say Microsoft has effectively become the “market maker” within the global durable carbon removal industry.

The company’s long-term purchasing agreements have helped support project financing, technology validation, investor confidence, and broader market development for emerging carbon removal technologies.

Industry observers note that Microsoft’s buying activity provides developers with long-term revenue certainty needed to secure financing for large-scale carbon capture infrastructure projects.

The company’s purchases have also helped establish standards around carbon accounting, durability requirements, and market credibility within the rapidly evolving carbon removal sector.

Analysts say future growth of the carbon removal industry may depend heavily on whether large corporate buyers such as Microsoft continue scaling procurement activity.

The growing energy demands linked to artificial intelligence infrastructure may also increase pressure on Microsoft to accelerate carbon removal purchases in order to meet its climate commitments.

Some analysts believe the company could continue expanding deals similar to the BioCirc agreement if emissions linked to AI-driven electricity demand continue rising.

Microsoft Pursues Carbon Negative Goal

The BioCirc agreement forms part of Microsoft’s broader ambition to become carbon negative by 2030.

The company has increasingly combined renewable energy procurement, operational emissions reductions, and durable carbon removal purchases as part of its climate strategy.

Earlier this year, Microsoft also announced another BECCS-related carbon removal agreement tied to what is believed to be Canada’s first majority Indigenous-owned carbon removal project.

Analysts say the company’s growing portfolio of carbon removal projects demonstrates how major corporations are increasingly treating carbon removal as a long-term infrastructure market rather than simply a voluntary offset mechanism.

Bertel Maigaard described the agreement as an important validation of BioCirc’s carbon removal platform.

“The agreement is a major milestone for BioCirc and a meaningful validation of our approach to delivering durable carbon removal,” Maigaard said.

He added that Microsoft is helping develop the market for permanent carbon dioxide removal while supporting broader climate goals.

Phillip Goodman said scalable and durable carbon removal solutions remain critical to the future development of global carbon removal markets.

Outlook

Microsoft’s new agreement with BioCirc highlights the growing importance of durable carbon removal technologies within corporate climate strategies and the broader global energy transition.

The deal also reinforces Microsoft’s central role in shaping the emerging carbon removal market through large-scale long-term purchasing agreements.

As governments and corporations continue pursuing net-zero and carbon-negative targets, technologies such as BECCS are expected to play an increasingly important role in addressing hard-to-abate emissions.

At the same time, continued growth of the carbon removal industry may depend heavily on sustained corporate demand, financing support, and the ability of projects to deliver scalable and verifiable long-term carbon storage solutions.
