US Treasury Yields Fall as Fed Signals Caution on Rates

US Treasury yields decline as the Federal Reserve signals caution on interest rates, highlighting bond market movements, monetary policy uncertainty, and investor expectations

Short-dated US Treasury yields fell on October 29, 2026, as investors reassessed how aggressively the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates after it left borrowing costs unchanged. Despite describing economic growth as strong and inflation as elevated, policymakers offered limited guidance on the next move. Traders continued to anticipate another increase in December, but became less certain about the pace of tightening.

Key Overview

  • Two-year Treasury yield: Fell 5.4 basis points to 4.680% during Asian trading on October 29.
  • Federal Reserve decision: Held the benchmark interest-rate target at 3.75%–4.00%, following a September increase.
  • Policy vote: 10–2, with two officials favouring an immediate 25-basis-point increase.
  • Ten-year Treasury yield: Declined to 4.996%, while the 30-year yield eased to 5.322%.
  • December outlook: Traders assigned roughly a 78% probability to another rate hike at the time of the report, although expectations remained sensitive to new inflation data.

Treasury Yields Retreat After Fed Holds Rates

The two-year Treasury yield, which is particularly sensitive to expectations for Federal Reserve policy, dropped 5.4 basis points to 4.680% during Asian trading on Thursday, October 29. It had touched 4.788% the previous day before the central bank announced its decision. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions, meaning the drop in yields reflected renewed demand for shorter-dated government debt.

The selloff reversal also reached longer maturities. The benchmark 10-year yield slipped 4.8 basis points to 4.996%, just below 5%, while the 30-year yield declined 3.8 basis points to 5.322%. These figures describe a snapshot of Thursday’s trading, not the full-day closing yields, as detailed in the October 29 Treasury-market report.

Fed Sees Strong Growth but Persistent Inflation

The October 28 policy statement kept the federal funds target range at 3.75%–4.00% in a 10–2 vote. Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack dissented, preferring an immediate quarter-point increase. The decision followed the September quarter-point rate increase, which had lifted the target range to its current level.

The central bank upgraded its description of economic expansion from solid in September to strong in October, citing resilient domestic spending, productivity growth, capital investment and steady employment conditions. Yet it also acknowledged that inflation remained elevated, reinforcing the tension between a robust economy and the need to bring price increases back toward its 2% target.

Chair Kevin Warsh indicated that inflation could be lowered without unnecessarily damaging economic growth or employment. His remarks, however, provided little certainty over the timing and number of future increases, leaving markets to interpret incoming data rather than rely on a predetermined rate path.

December Rate-Hike Bets Remain High

Investors still expected additional monetary tightening. At the time of Thursday’s report, futures pricing suggested approximately a 78% probability of a December increase, although conviction had eased following Warsh’s press conference. Such probabilities are market-implied estimates that change with futures prices, not commitments by the central bank.

An assessment of the October decision also noted that policymakers faced conflicting pressures from persistent inflation and higher financing costs. Analysts interpreted the pause differently: some saw a temporary delay before another hike, while others argued that traders had become too aggressive in forecasting further tightening.

Why the Yield Curve and Fed Calendar Matter

The differing reactions across Treasury maturities underscore uncertainty over long-term inflation and the credibility of the Fed’s policy response. Short-term yields tend to track expected policy rates more closely, while longer-term yields also reflect inflation expectations, growth prospects and compensation demanded for holding debt over time.

Warsh also outlined plans to reserve one regularly scheduled meeting in 2027 and two in 2028 for broader strategic discussions rather than interest-rate decisions, a change covered in reporting on the Fed’s announcement. Some bond strategists regarded the reduced number of rate-setting opportunities as a dovish signal.

The immediate focus now shifts to forthcoming inflation and employment releases ahead of the December meeting. For households, businesses and bond investors, the central question is whether strong US growth can persist while the Fed restores inflation to target without needing substantially higher interest rates.
