TotalEnergies is expanding technical cooperation with PETRONAS in Malaysia, SONANGOL in Angola and Oil India Limited in India to reduce methane emissions. The partnerships support the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter’s ambition of near-zero upstream methane emissions by 2030 through emissions measurement, monitoring technology, flaring reduction, energy efficiency and technical training.

Key Takeaways

  • TotalEnergies is strengthening methane-reduction cooperation with PETRONAS, SONANGOL and Oil India Limited.
  • In Malaysia, the partners are developing SEA METEC, a regional centre for evaluating methane measurement and monitoring technologies.
  • In Angola, TotalEnergies and SONANGOL are working on methane detection, flaring reduction, energy efficiency and facility electrification.
  • In India, a second one-month AUSEA campaign will extend aerial methane monitoring to additional Oil India sites.
  • The partnerships support the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter’s ambition of near-zero upstream methane emissions by 2030.

TotalEnergies Expands Methane-Reduction Cooperation

TotalEnergies is strengthening its cooperation with national oil and gas companies in Malaysia, Angola, and India to support efforts to reduce methane emissions and advance operational decarbonisation.

The partnerships with PETRONAS, SONANGOL and Oil India Limited (OIL) were highlighted during a meeting of member companies of the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC) in Abu Dhabi. The charter’s signatories, which launched the initiative at COP28 in Dubai, have committed to achieving near-zero upstream methane emissions by 2030.

The initiatives focus on sharing technologies, expertise and best practices to improve methane detection, measurement and monitoring. They also address emissions reporting, flaring reduction, energy efficiency and facility electrification.

Malaysia: Developing a Methane Technology Evaluation Centre

SEA METEC methane technology evaluation centre in Malaysia, led by PETRONAS with TotalEnergies and partners supporting methane monitoring and reporting.

In Malaysia, TotalEnergies has signed a collaboration agreement with PETRONAS, the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and JGC Corporation to support the development of the Southeast Asia Methane Emissions Technology Evaluation Center (SEA METEC)

Led by PETRONAS and based in Malaysia, SEA METEC will evaluate technologies used to measure and monitor methane emissions across Southeast Asia. The regional centre is intended to strengthen knowledge sharing and support the harmonisation of methane measurement and quantification methodologies.

TotalEnergies will contribute expertise gained through its TotalEnergies Anomalies Detection Initiative centre. Located at the company’s Lacq Research and Development Centre in France, TADI tests methane detection and measurement technologies under controlled conditions designed to represent industrial operating environments.

The company has accumulated more than a decade of experience through TADI, which it describes as Europe’s only facility dedicated to evaluating methane detection and quantification technologies.

Through SEA METEC, regional operators are expected to gain access to more consistent approaches for detecting, measuring and ultimately reducing methane emissions. Standardised measurement methods can also support more comparable emissions reporting across companies and facilities.

Angola: Methane Reduction and Decarbonisation With SONANGOL

In Angola, TotalEnergies has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SONANGOL to strengthen technical cooperation on methane emissions reduction and decarbonisation.

Building on experience gained through AUSEA technology, the agreement covers methane emissions detection, measurement, monitoring and reduction, alongside the sharing of best practices, methodologies and technical expertise.

The companies are working to identify solutions to reduce methane emissions and flaring, improve energy efficiency, promote facility electrification and advance carbon management solutions.

The cooperation also includes greenhouse gas emissions reporting, technical training and knowledge sharing. In addition, the partners are exploring financing opportunities, including potential support from the World Bank’s Global Flaring and Methane Reduction (GFMR) Fund.

These areas of cooperation connect emissions measurement with practical operational measures. Detection and monitoring can help identify sources of methane loss, while flaring reduction, energy efficiency and electrification form part of the partners’ wider decarbonisation work.

India: Extending Aerial Methane Detection Campaigns

In India, TotalEnergies and Oil India Limited (OIL) are expanding their fieldwork following a successful initial campaign using AUSEA technology.

The first one-month campaign covered more than 20 OIL-operated sites in Assam. It provided OIL with data to support its emissions reporting and demonstrated the technology’s ability to detect and quantify methane across different sites and field conditions.

The companies will now conduct a second one-month-long campaign at additional OIL-operated sites. The extended campaign will broaden aerial monitoring and strengthen cooperation on methane emissions reduction.

AUSEA, or the Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Applications, is a drone-mounted analyser developed by TotalEnergies and research partners. Its dual sensor detects methane and carbon dioxide while identifying the source of emissions. The system can be used at difficult-to-access locations across onshore and offshore industrial facilities.

The campaign’s measurements will support OIL’s emissions reporting and provide additional information for its monitoring activities.

ESG Focus: Measurement, Reporting and Operational Action

The three partnerships address several environmental and governance priorities within the oil and gas sector. Methane detection and quantification support the identification of emissions sources, while harmonised measurement methods can strengthen consistency in environmental reporting.

The agreements also incorporate operational measures, including reducing flaring, improving energy efficiency and electrifying facilities. Technical training and knowledge sharing are intended to build local capabilities and support the adoption of emissions-reduction practices.

For TotalEnergies, the partnerships demonstrate how collaboration with national oil companies can extend access to monitoring technologies and decarbonisation expertise across different operating environments.

Outlook

TotalEnergies’ cooperation with PETRONAS, SONANGOL and OIL supports the OGDC’s shared ambition of near-zero upstream methane emissions by 2030. The next steps include developing SEA METEC, advancing technical cooperation in Angola and carrying out the second AUSEA campaign in India.

The partnerships combine measurement and monitoring with operational improvements and technical capacity-building. Their progress will depend on continued cooperation and the application of the technologies and practices across participating facilities.
