Sub-Saharan Africa’s economy is forecast to expand by 4.3% in 2026, an improvement from 4.1% in 2025 and 0.3 percentage points above the previous April projection.

The improved outlook reflects stronger domestic demand, greater macroeconomic resilience and investment connected to the global energy transition and digital technologies. Kenya also features prominently in the region’s emerging technology story, joining Nigeria and South Africa among economies showing relatively early adoption of artificial intelligence.

However, stronger headline growth is being accompanied by renewed inflation pressures, high debt-servicing costs and significant exposure to geopolitical, climate and financing shocks.

Key Overview

  • Sub-Saharan African growth is forecast at 4.3% in 2026, up from 4.1% in 2025.
  • The projection is 0.3 percentage points higher than the April 2026 forecast.
  • Growth forecasts have been upgraded for nearly three-quarters of countries, including Angola, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Zambia.
  • Median regional inflation is projected to rise to 5.5% in 2026 from 3.7% in 2025.
  • Public debt has broadly stabilised at around 57% of GDP, but servicing costs remain elevated.
  • Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa stand out as relatively early adopters of AI.
  • Kenya’s economy is separately projected to grow about 4.6% in 2026.

Regional Growth Gains Momentum

The latest regional economic outlook shows that Sub-Saharan Africa is continuing to expand despite geopolitical tensions, weaker development assistance and uncertainty surrounding global trade.

Growth is expected to accelerate from 4.1% in 2025 to 4.3% this year, representing a notable improvement from the forecast issued in April.

Stronger domestic demand is one of the main drivers. Investment associated with clean energy and digital technologies is also supporting activity as countries seek to expand infrastructure, modernise industries and attract capital linked to the global energy transition.

Forecasts have been upgraded for nearly three-quarters of economies in the region. Angola, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Zambia are among the countries specifically identified as benefiting from stronger outlooks following reforms and improvements in economic management.

Even so, economic expansion remains insufficient to create enough jobs for Africa’s rapidly growing working-age population or deliver the pace of poverty reduction policymakers are seeking.

Kenya Combines Resilience With Digital Potential

Kenya remains one of the region’s more diversified economies and is expected to record growth of around 4.6% in 2026.

Its current economic outlook benefits from relatively stable inflation, stronger foreign-exchange reserves and a resilient macroeconomic framework, although fiscal pressures remain substantial.

Public debt and high interest payments continue to constrain government expenditure, while productivity and formal job creation remain longer-term challenges.

Kenya nevertheless stands out in another important area: artificial intelligence. Alongside Nigeria and South Africa, it is among the relatively small group of African economies where AI adoption is already gaining momentum across businesses, technology companies and digital services.

This gives Kenya an opportunity to use its established technology ecosystem to increase productivity in sectors such as finance, agriculture, logistics, health and education.

Inflation and Debt Remain Major Risks

The improved growth forecast does not mean macroeconomic pressures have disappeared.

Median inflation across Sub-Saharan Africa is projected to increase from 3.7% in 2025 to 5.5% in 2026, partly because of higher global fuel, fertiliser and food prices.

Regional public debt has broadly stabilised at around 57% of GDP, but the cost of servicing that debt remains a significant challenge. High interest payments reduce the resources governments can allocate to infrastructure, healthcare, education and other development priorities.

Declining development assistance adds another layer of pressure. Governments are increasingly being pushed to strengthen domestic revenue collection, deepen local capital markets and develop more sustainable financing sources.

The latest regional assessment also warns that geopolitical escalation could lift commodity prices further, intensifying inflation and weakening external and fiscal balances.

Climate risks remain significant as well. A potential El Niño event could disrupt agricultural production and worsen food insecurity, while tighter financial conditions could make external borrowing more difficult and expensive.

AI Could Become a New Source of Productivity

One of the most important themes in the outlook is the potential role of artificial intelligence in Africa’s economic transformation.

Rather than focusing primarily on expensive frontier AI systems, the report argues that Africa could gain more from affordable and locally adapted applications designed for specific economic problems.

Low-bandwidth AI tools could improve agricultural advice, financial services, healthcare delivery, education, logistics and public administration.

Realising that opportunity will require more than software. Countries will need reliable electricity, affordable internet connectivity, stronger digital skills, quality datasets, computing capacity and effective regulation.

For Kenya, its relatively advanced digital economy provides an important foundation, but translating early AI adoption into widespread productivity improvements will depend on whether technology reaches businesses and workers beyond the largest cities and major companies.

The wider regional picture is therefore one of improving momentum combined with persistent structural risks. A 4.3% growth forecast represents stronger economic performance, but converting that expansion into jobs, investment and higher living standards will remain the bigger test for Sub-Saharan Africa.
