Kenya’s population of dollar millionaires fell to 6,500 as of June 2026, down from 6,800 a year earlier, according to the latest Africa Wealth Report. Nairobi accounted for much of the decline, with its millionaire population falling to about 4,000 from 4,200.

The figures point to a 4.4% decline nationally and roughly 4.8% in Nairobi. However, the report’s methodology is important: it defines millionaires as people holding at least $1 million in liquid investable wealth, including equities, bonds, cash, gold, exchange-traded funds and crypto, while excluding illiquid assets such as property, private businesses and private equity.

Key Overview

  • Kenya had about 6,500 dollar millionaires as of June 30, 2026, down from 6,800 in 2025.
  • Nairobi’s millionaire population fell from about 4,200 to 4,000 over the same period.
  • Kenya’s centi-millionaire population declined from 16 to 15, while Nairobi retained 10.
  • Kenya remained Africa’s fifth-largest millionaire market, behind South Africa, Egypt, Morocco and Nigeria.
  • South Africa led the continent with 48,200 millionaires, while Nigeria had about 8,100.
  • The wealth report measures liquid wealth rather than total net worth including homes and privately held businesses.
  • Kenyan pension funds also increased offshore investments in 2026, although this does not by itself prove that wealthy individuals are moving their assets abroad.

Kenya Records a Decline in Dollar Millionaires

The latest wealth estimates put Kenya at approximately 6,500 resident millionaires at the end of June 2026, compared with 6,800 in the previous edition.

That represents a decline of about 300 people, or 4.4%. The number of Kenyans classified as centi-millionaires — individuals with liquid wealth of at least $100 million — also slipped from 16 to 15.

Kenya nevertheless remains one of Africa’s largest private-wealth markets. It ranks fifth by millionaire population, behind South Africa, Egypt, Morocco and Nigeria.

The continental leader, South Africa, had 48,200 millionaires, 131 centi-millionaires and 10 billionaires as of June 2026. Morocco had about 8,300 millionaires and Nigeria 8,100, while Kenya had no resident billionaire under the report’s liquid-wealth methodology.

Nairobi Accounts for Much of the Drop

Nairobi remains Kenya’s main concentration of private wealth, but its millionaire population also declined.

The city had just over 4,000 high-net-worth residents by June 2026, compared with approximately 4,200 in the previous year. The number of centi-millionaires in the capital remained at 10.

That means Nairobi continues to account for more than 60% of Kenya’s millionaire population and about 45% of the country’s total private wealth.

The city also remains one of Africa’s prominent wealth centres, supported by financial services, technology, real estate, professional services and regional corporate headquarters.

Despite the latest decline, the wealth report lists Nairobi among African locations expected to experience strong millionaire growth through 2040.

What the Millionaire Figures Actually Measure

The headline figures should not be interpreted as a direct count of people whose total assets exceed $1 million.

The report defines high-net-worth individuals as people with at least $1 million in liquid wealth. Liquid assets include shares, ETFs, cash, bonds, gold and cryptocurrency holdings that can be converted into cash relatively quickly.

Property, family businesses and private-equity holdings are excluded. As a result, an entrepreneur who owns a highly valuable private company or substantial real estate may not necessarily qualify if their liquid portfolio remains below the threshold.

The estimates are also expressed in U.S. dollars, meaning movements in exchange rates and asset prices can change the number of people above the $1 million threshold even without an equivalent change in their wealth measured in Kenyan shillings.

The report uses a modelling approach incorporating household income statistics, stock-market capitalisation, tax data, prime-property indicators and its proprietary database of wealthy individuals.

Offshore Pension Investments Rise

Separate retirement-sector data shows Kenyan institutional investors have also been increasing their exposure to international assets.

Pension funds’ offshore investments rose to about KSh105.7 billion by June 2026, an increase of about 24% as schemes diversified their portfolios.

Offshore assets still represented only a small proportion of the industry’s KSh3.17 trillion in total assets, and pension schemes are permitted to invest up to 15% of their assets offshore.

The pension data should not be treated as evidence that Kenya’s wealthy individuals are necessarily shifting their own fortunes overseas. Pension-fund allocations are institutional investment decisions made within regulatory limits and can reflect diversification, return expectations and risk management.

Africa’s Wealth Outlook Remains Positive

The wider continental outlook is more optimistic than Kenya’s one-year decline suggests.

Africa now has more than 127,000 dollar millionaires, and the latest report projects that the number could more than double by 2040.

Nairobi is specifically identified among destinations expected to record strong future millionaire growth, alongside Cape Town, Marrakech, Tangier, Windhoek and several South African coastal and lifestyle regions.

For Kenya, the 2026 figures therefore show a short-term reduction in the number of residents above the $1 million liquid-wealth threshold rather than evidence of a permanent decline in private wealth.

Future movements will depend on factors including financial-market performance, business growth, exchange rates, investment returns and the ability of Nairobi and the wider economy to continue attracting and retaining high-net-worth residents.
