Kenya, in collaboration with Microsoft Corporation and G42, is unveiling a landmark $1 billion digital investment plan aimed at propelling the nation into the forefront of the digital age. The initiative, formalized through a signed letter of intent, signifies a pivotal moment in Kenya’s digital transformation journey.
At the heart of this initiative lies the construction of a cutting-edge green data center in Olkaria, Kenya, to be powered entirely by renewable geothermal energy. Spearheaded by G42 and its partners, this facility will serve as the hub for Microsoft Azure operations in the newly designated East Africa Cloud Region. Scheduled to be operational within 24 months, this cloud region will provide businesses and individuals across Kenya and East Africa with access to scalable, secure, and high-speed cloud and AI services, accelerating digital innovation and economic growth in the region.
Complementing the data center investment, the initiative will focus on fostering local innovation and skills development through the development of local-language AI models, the establishment of an East Africa Innovation Lab for AI research and training, and strategic investments in international and local connectivity to support secure cloud services.
President William Ruto emphasized the broader significance of the partnership, highlighting its role in empowering Kenya’s citizens and positioning the nation as a digital leader on the global stage. Brad Smith, vice chair and president of Microsoft, echoed these sentiments, underlining the responsible introduction of digital technology to drive inclusive growth.
Peng Xiao, Group CEO of G42, expressed confidence in the initiative’s ability to catalyze sustainable technological growth in Kenya and the wider region. Through the establishment of a green data center and the development of locally relevant AI solutions, G42 aims to empower both the government and communities with advanced cloud services and AI capabilities.
In summary, the Kenya-Microsoft-G42 partnership represents a significant milestone in Kenya’s digital journey, promising to unlock new opportunities for innovation, economic development, and societal progress.
