Stockholm Stock Market Flat as Earnings Drive Sharp Stock Moves

Share
Stockholm stock market opens mixed on Wednesday as the OMXS30 index trades flat amid varied performance across Swedish equities
Share

The Stockholm stock market opened Wednesday on a mixed note as investors assessed another round of corporate earnings and shifting sector performance. The benchmark OMXS30 index was virtually unchanged, rising 0.03% to 3,297.93 at around 9:20 a.m., while approximately SEK 1.4 billion worth of shares changed hands. Energy stocks led sector gains, while consumer discretionary shares lagged. Earnings generated much larger moves among individual companies, with Ferronordic surging 22% following stronger second-quarter results and Catena Media plunging 24% after reporting weaker operating profit.

Key Overview

Trading on Nasdaq Stockholm was subdued at the index level, but individual stocks experienced substantial volatility as earnings season continued. Saab and ABB were among the strongest OMXS30 constituents, both gaining around 1.4%, while Lifco and H&M declined.

Outside the benchmark index, Ferronordic emerged as a major winner after returning to profitability, while Catena Media suffered a steep selloff. Energy stocks also benefited from stronger oil prices, with crude and Brent futures advancing during the session.

OMXS30 Index Opens Almost Flat

SERRARI infographic highlighting a mixed start for the Stockholm stock market, with the OMXS30 Index edging 0.03% higher to 3,297.93 points at around 9:20 a.m. and trading activity reaching approximately SEK1.4 billion. Energy led major sectors with a 1.4% gain, while consumer discretionary declined 0.8%. Among major stocks, Saab B and ABB each gained 1.4%, while Lifco B fell 1.2% and H&M B declined 1.1%. The infographic emphasizes that the nearly flat benchmark masked significant differences across sectors and individual stocks as investors assessed corporate earnings and broader European market developments.

The Stockholm stock market showed little overall direction early Wednesday, with the OMXS30 gaining just 0.03% to reach 3,297.93 points at approximately 9:20 a.m.

Trading activity amounted to around SEK 1.4 billion, reflecting a cautious start as investors continued evaluating corporate earnings and broader developments across European equity markets.

The relatively flat benchmark masked more pronounced movements beneath the surface.

Energy was the strongest-performing major industrial sector, advancing approximately 1.4%. Consumer discretionary stocks were at the opposite end of the market, declining around 0.8%.

Among major OMXS30 constituents, defence company Saab’s B shares climbed approximately 1.4%, while ABB also advanced 1.4%.

Lifco B was among the weakest major stocks, declining 1.2%, while fashion retailer H&M B fell approximately 1.1%.

The mixed performance suggests investor sentiment was being shaped more by company-specific developments and earnings announcements than by a single broad market catalyst.

Ferronordic Surges 22% After Returning to Profit

One of Wednesday’s most dramatic movements came from machinery dealer Ferronordic, whose shares surged approximately 22%.

The company reported a sharp increase in second-quarter revenue and swung back to profitability. Results improved across its operating markets, while its U.S. operations delivered record performance.

Ferronordic also maintained a positive outlook for its American business.

In Germany, management expects the gradual recovery in market conditions to continue. Activity in Kazakhstan is also expected to strengthen as government spending resumes.

The combination of higher revenue, restored profitability and an optimistic operating outlook provided a strong catalyst for the stock.

Ferronordic’s rally demonstrates how earnings season can create substantial differences in market performance even when the broader Stockholm benchmark remains largely unchanged.

Catena Media Plunges Following Weaker Earnings

At the opposite end of Wednesday’s trading was Catena Media.

Shares in the affiliate marketing company plunged approximately 24% after it reported lower operating profit and slightly weaker revenue for the second quarter compared with the corresponding period a year earlier.

The sharp decline made Catena Media one of the clearest examples of negative earnings-related sentiment during the session.

The magnitude of the selloff also contrasted sharply with the near-flat movement in the OMXS30, highlighting the elevated company-specific volatility accompanying the current earnings season.

G5 Entertainment Falls After Operating Loss

Game developer G5 Entertainment also came under selling pressure after publishing its second-quarter results.

The company reported lower revenue and a negative operating result. However, its gross margin increased to a record level, supported by continued growth from the G5 Store.

G5 Entertainment has also significantly reduced its workforce as it adjusts its cost structure.

Despite the record gross margin, investors focused on the weaker revenue and operating performance, sending the stock approximately 4.5% lower.

The reaction illustrates the challenge facing companies where improving efficiency metrics are not yet translating into stronger headline earnings.

Meren Energy Gains as 2026 Outlook Improves

Energy company Meren Energy moved in the opposite direction, gaining approximately 4%.

The oil and gas producer reported slightly higher second-quarter EBITDAX, which measures earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortisation and exploration costs.

More importantly for investors, the company increased its forecast ranges for both EBITDAX and cash flow from operations for 2026.

The improved outlook was driven primarily by a significant increase in Meren Energy’s assumed average Brent crude price, which was raised to $86 per barrel from $63.

The revision comes as international oil prices remain elevated, providing additional support for energy-related Swedish equities.

Sampo Gains Following Results and Guidance Upgrade

Insurance group Sampo also received a positive market response to its latest financial results.

Its underwriting result exceeded expectations, although profit before tax came in below analysts’ forecasts. The company nevertheless raised its full-year guidance, helping its shares advance approximately 1%.

The reaction suggests investors placed greater emphasis on the stronger underwriting performance and improved outlook than on the profit-before-tax miss.

Earnings guidance remains particularly important during periods of market uncertainty because it provides investors with additional insight into how management expects current conditions to affect future profitability.

Arctic Paper Slips Despite Smaller Operating Loss

Paper manufacturer Arctic Paper reported lower second-quarter revenue but reduced its operating loss compared with the same period last year.

Investors nevertheless reacted negatively, with the stock falling approximately 3.8%.

The decline indicates that the improvement in operating losses was insufficient to offset concerns surrounding weaker revenue.

For companies exposed to cyclical industries, investors are closely watching both demand conditions and the ability of management teams to protect profitability through cost controls.

Acast Announces $20 Million Acquisition

Podcast company Acast was another stock in focus after announcing an acquisition in the United States.

Acast agreed to acquire U.S.-based Backyard Ventures for $20 million. The transaction includes $16 million in cash and $4 million in Acast shares through a deferred payment arrangement.

Backyard Ventures works with more than 200 creators and generates approximately $16.1 million in revenue during 2025, with an adjusted EBITDA margin of 12%.

Acast shares edged approximately 0.1% higher following the announcement, suggesting a relatively measured initial response from investors.

Meanwhile, SB1 Markets initiated coverage of Nederman and Svedbergs with buy recommendations. Nederman gained approximately 2.1%, while Svedbergs advanced 0.7%.

Swedish Stocks Show Mixed Market Breadth

Broader trading data reinforced the mixed tone across the Sweden stock market.

Declining shares outnumbered advancing stocks by 381 to 333, while another 83 securities finished unchanged.

Among notable laggards, Addtech declined approximately 1.76%, H&M fell 1.70% and NIBE Industrier lost around 1.68%.

The negative market breadth is worth noting because the OMXS30 itself showed little movement. It indicates that weakness was somewhat more widespread among individual stocks than the headline benchmark suggested.

That divergence can occur when gains in larger index constituents offset declines across a greater number of smaller companies.

Higher Oil Prices Support Energy Sector

Commodity markets also provided an important backdrop for Wednesday’s trading.

September crude oil futures advanced approximately 1.3% to $83.20 per barrel, while October Brent crude gained around 1.19% to $88.76.

Higher oil prices helped explain why energy emerged as the strongest major sector in Stockholm.

Gold futures also increased, with the December contract gaining approximately 0.53% to trade around $4,442.97 per troy ounce.

Currency markets showed modest weakness in the Swedish krona. EUR/SEK increased approximately 0.29% to 10.98, while USD/SEK similarly rose 0.29% to 9.52.

Stockholm Stock Market Outlook

The latest session shows a Stockholm stock market that is relatively stable at the benchmark level but considerably more volatile among individual companies.

With the OMXS30 hovering around 3,298 points, earnings remain an important short-term driver for Swedish stocks. Ferronordic’s 22% rally and Catena Media’s 24% decline demonstrate how strongly investors are responding to differences in profitability, guidance and corporate outlooks.

Higher oil prices are meanwhile providing support to energy companies, while consumer discretionary shares remain under pressure.

As earnings season progresses, investors are likely to continue focusing on company guidance, margins and expectations for the remainder of 2026 rather than relying solely on movements in the headline OMXS30 index.
