Kenya USD Money Market Fund Wins CMA Approval in New Wave

Zimele Asset Management is adding a USD Money Market Fund to its unit-trust range after approval from Kenya’s Capital Markets Authority.

The fund is one of five new Zimele products reported in the August 12 approval wave, alongside USD and Kenya-shilling fixed-income funds, an Education Plan and a Saving Plan.

For investors, the main question is not simply whether a dollar fund is attractive. It is whether the investor actually has dollar income, dollar liabilities or a deliberate reason to hold foreign-currency assets.

Key Overview

  • Zimele has received approval for a USD Money Market Fund.
  • It is part of five additional Zimele products.
  • Commercial terms and launch date are not yet public.
  • Kenya’s CIS industry reached about KSh851.7 billion by March 2026.
  • Money market funds represented approximately 51.9% of industry assets.
  • USD denomination reduces currency conversion needs for dollar users but does not remove investment or foreign-exchange risk.

Kenya USD Money Market Fund Wins CMA Approval in New Wave

Kenyan investors holding U.S. dollars are set to gain another regulated cash-investment option after the Capital Markets Authority approved the Zimele USD Money Market Fund.

The Kenya Times coverage of CMA approvals reports that the product forms part of five additions to Zimele Unit Trust Funds. The others include a USD Fixed Income Fund, KES Fixed Income Fund, Education Plan and Saving Plan.

Zimele already operates regulated pooled investments in Kenya. Its official fund governance information page identifies Zimele as fund manager, KCB Bank as trustee and Standard Chartered Bank as custodian.

Why a USD MMF Is Different

A USD money-market fund pools investor dollars and invests them in short-term income-producing instruments denominated primarily in, or linked to, the dollar.

The exact portfolio of the new Zimele fund has not yet been published, so it would be premature to state which securities it will hold.

That matters because money-market funds can differ in their allocation between bank deposits, government securities, commercial paper and other short-term instruments.

Investors should wait for the Information Memorandum or factsheet before comparing its return and risk with competing funds.

Who Could Actually Need It?

A USD MMF can make particular sense when the investor’s future spending is also in dollars.

Examples include:

  • Overseas university fees;
  • International business expenses;
  • Dollar-denominated property obligations;
  • Travel savings;
  • Export or consulting income; and
  • Diaspora remittances retained in USD.

In these situations, an investor may avoid repeatedly converting dollars into Kenya shillings and then converting them back when the money is eventually needed.

That is a practical currency-matching benefit rather than a prediction that the dollar will always outperform the shilling.

USD Does Not Automatically Mean Better

A Kenya-based investor earning and spending primarily in shillings takes foreign-exchange exposure when moving money into a USD fund.

If the dollar strengthens against the shilling, the value of the investment rises when translated back into KES, all else equal.

If the shilling strengthens, the opposite can happen.

A USD MMF can therefore generate positive dollar income while producing a weaker shilling-equivalent result.

Currency denomination should match the investor’s objective rather than being treated as a guaranteed source of superior returns.

USD MMF Versus a Fixed Deposit

A dollar fixed deposit and a dollar money-market fund can appear similar because both target relatively conservative income.

The difference lies in structure.

A fixed deposit is an agreement with one bank for a specified rate and maturity. Breaking the deposit early can involve penalties depending on the terms.

An MMF pools money across investors and is professionally managed across a portfolio of eligible instruments. Returns can change as the portfolio matures and is reinvested.

That can provide greater liquidity and diversification, but the exact advantage depends on fees, withdrawal terms and the fund’s portfolio.

Those details have not yet been disclosed for the new Zimele product.

USD MMF Versus USD Fixed Income

Zimele has also received approval for a USD Fixed Income Fund, according to the Khusoko report on fund approvals.

The distinction is important.

A money-market fund normally focuses on shorter-duration instruments and cash management.

A fixed-income fund can potentially hold longer-dated bonds and therefore carry greater sensitivity to movements in interest rates.

Investors should not treat the two products as interchangeable merely because both are denominated in dollars.

Kenya’s Fund Industry Keeps Expanding

The new product arrives as Kenya’s collective-investment industry continues to grow.

Recent industry analysis citing CMA’s Q1 figures places total CIS assets at approximately KSh851.7 billion at March 2026, compared with KSh756.3 billion in December 2025. Money-market funds represented around 51.9% of assets, while special funds had expanded to roughly 23.9%, or about KSh203.5 billion.

The trend is broader than Zimele.

The CMA current CIS licensing register already shows multiple managers offering USD money-market or dollar-denominated investment products, including NCBA, KCB, Absa, Jubilee, Enwealth, Kuza and others.

Zimele is therefore entering an increasingly competitive segment rather than creating Kenya’s first dollar MMF.

Serrari infographic titled “Inside Kenya’s New USD Money Market Option,” explaining CMA approval for Zimele’s USD Money Market Fund. The visual shows approval status, Kenya CIS industry assets, money market fund share of industry assets, pending launch terms, the process from CMA approval to investor subscriptions, governance parties, possible investor use cases and key checks such as yield, fees, minimum investment, withdrawal time, portfolio composition and launch date.

A comparison of four Kenyan cash and fixed-income options: a USD Money Market Fund, KES Money Market Fund, USD Fixed Deposit and USD Fixed Income Fund. The infographic compares currency, liquidity, changing versus fixed returns, interest-rate sensitivity and foreign-exchange exposure, alongside Kenya’s KSh851.7 billion collective-investment market where MMFs remain the largest category.

What Investors Should Check Next

The approval is only the first step for product comparison.

Before investing, investors should look for:

  • Published annualised yield;
  • Management and trustee fees;
  • Minimum investment;
  • Withdrawal processing time;
  • Portfolio composition;
  • Credit quality;
  • Distribution policy; and
  • Launch date.

CMA itself advises investors to examine fund Information Memoranda, trust deeds, risk appetite and investment horizons before investing in collective investment schemes.

Conclusion

Zimele’s new USD Money Market Fund adds another regulated option for Kenyans who already hold dollars or expect future dollar expenses.

Its strongest use case is therefore not speculation on the exchange rate. It is matching the currency of an investment with the currency of a future financial need while earning a return on otherwise idle dollars.

But investors still need the missing commercial information before making meaningful comparisons.

Yield, fees, liquidity and portfolio quality will ultimately determine whether the new fund is competitive against existing USD MMFs, dollar fixed deposits and Zimele’s own new USD Fixed Income Fund.

FAQs

1. Is the Zimele USD MMF available for investment immediately?

The fund has received regulatory approval, but the public material reviewed does not yet establish a confirmed subscription or launch date.

2. Does a USD MMF protect investors from currency risk?

Not for a Kenya-shilling investor. The fund remains denominated in dollars, so changes in USD/KES can increase or reduce the investment’s shilling-equivalent value.

3. Is a USD MMF the same as a USD fixed deposit?

No. A fixed deposit is placed with a bank under agreed terms, while an MMF pools investor money into a managed portfolio of short-term securities and deposits.

4. What return will Zimele’s USD MMF offer?

No verified public yield has yet been established. Investors should wait for Zimele’s official Information Memorandum or factsheet rather than assuming a return from competing dollar funds.
