Kenya and Mauritius are seeking to build a stronger economic corridor linking finance, investment and technology as businesses in both countries look for easier ways to expand across African markets.

The push was highlighted during the Kenya-Mauritius Business Forum in Nairobi, part of a wider Mauritius promotional mission to East Africa covering Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia. Discussions focused on using Kenya’s entrepreneurial and digital strengths alongside Mauritius’ international financial-services ecosystem to support investment and cross-border expansion.

Key Overview

  • Kenya and Mauritius are targeting deeper cooperation in finance, investment and technology.
  • Mauritius says financial services contribute about 12.4% of its GDP.
  • Its financial centre supports approximately $130 billion in assets under management.
  • Mauritius had 864 global funds and 194 Variable Capital Company funds as of June 2026.
  • The country recorded 13,341 Global Business Licence companies by June 2026.
  • Global Business Companies held approximately $372.9 billion in inward direct investment and $353.2 billion in outward investment as of June 2025.
  • Kenya and Mauritius are both seeking to use regional integration frameworks to make cross-border investment easier.
  • Technology cooperation is expected to cover fintech, cloud services, cybersecurity, AI, e-commerce and data analytics.

Nairobi and Port Louis Target a Stronger Investment Corridor

The Kenya-Mauritius Business Forum brought together companies and advisers from banking, investment, technology, legal services and corporate finance to explore ways businesses could operate more easily across African markets.

The forum formed part of an East Africa business mission focused on financial services and emerging technology, with Mauritius positioning itself as a platform through which African companies can structure investments, raise capital and establish operations across multiple jurisdictions.

Nanda Narrainen, a director at Mauritius’ Economic Development Board, said stronger links between Nairobi and Port Louis could combine Kenyan market expertise and digital talent with Mauritius’ financial infrastructure and investment networks.

The broader ambition is to make cross-border African investment more practical as the African Continental Free Trade Area expands opportunities for companies to operate beyond their domestic markets.

Mauritius Positions Finance as a Gateway to Africa

Mauritius used the forum to highlight the scale of its international financial centre.

Data presented during the event showed that financial services account for approximately 12.4% of GDP, while the country’s financial sector supports about $130 billion in assets under management.

By June 2026, Mauritius had 864 global funds, 194 Variable Capital Company funds and 13,341 Global Business Licence companies.

The country’s Global Business framework allows resident corporations to conduct international business from Mauritius under a regulated structure.

Investment flows through these companies are also substantial. Figures presented at the forum put inward direct investment at about $372.9 billion, while outward investment stood at around $353.2 billion as of June 2025.

For Kenyan companies seeking regional expansion or international capital, those structures could provide access to fund administration, banking, insurance, investment management and professional services within one financial centre.

Trade Finance and Insurance Offer Practical Opportunities

The forum also highlighted how partnerships between firms in the two countries can solve financing problems faced by African businesses.

One example was the cooperation between Kenya-based Underwriting Africa and Mauritius-based Swan Reinsurance PCC, which combines local market knowledge with offshore reinsurance capacity.

The arrangement has supported risks across 23 African countries, with a reported total sum assured of about $830 million and 129 risks supported.

Such structures are particularly relevant to companies involved in infrastructure, trade finance and guarantees, where insufficient collateral or limited credit information can restrict access to financing.

By combining local underwriting expertise with deeper pools of risk capital, cross-border partnerships can potentially make more African transactions bankable.

Technology Becomes the Second Major Pillar

Technology is emerging as an equally important part of the Kenya-Mauritius relationship.

The Nairobi forum discussions highlighted fintech, software development, e-commerce, cloud computing, cybersecurity, digital health, blockchain and data analytics as areas where businesses from both countries could collaborate.

Mauritius is also developing initiatives aimed at attracting technology investment, including a Start-up Act, an accelerator programme and plans for an AI-focused development at Côte d’Or.

Kenya, meanwhile, brings a mature digital payments ecosystem, a large technology talent base and a growing start-up sector.

Closer regulatory alignment could help companies operate across both markets with fewer barriers, especially in areas such as licensing, compliance and taxation.

Regional Integration Could Expand the Opportunity

Both countries are seeking to use regional economic frameworks to deepen their commercial links.

The Mauritius investment mission identified East Africa as strategically important because of its expanding consumer markets, investment opportunities and growing demand for financial and digital services.

Kenya offers access to one of Africa’s largest and most diversified East African economies, while Mauritius provides financial infrastructure and international investment networks.

If those strengths are connected effectively, companies could use Nairobi for market access and operational expertise while leveraging Mauritius for investment structuring, capital raising and cross-border financial services.

The next stage will depend on converting the forum’s discussions into actual transactions, joint ventures and regulatory cooperation. If successful, the Kenya-Mauritius relationship could become a practical example of how African markets can integrate capital, technology and expertise rather than relying primarily on financial centres outside the continent.
