Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote has acquired a 24.76% stake in Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC), extending his group’s reach into East Africa’s fuel transport infrastructure. Announced in October 2026, the investment forms part of a broader plan to connect refining, storage and distribution networks across the continent. It also complements construction work on a proposed 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Lamu, which could eventually serve regional fuel markets.

Key Overview

  • Kenya acquisition: Dangote confirmed a stake of approximately 25% in KPC; local reporting specifies 24.76%.
  • Transaction value: The reported block trade was worth roughly KSh 42.5 billion.
  • Regional distribution: Planned infrastructure includes fuel corridors in Ethiopia and Djibouti, and storage and logistics projects in Namibia and Cameroon.
  • Lamu refinery: The planned facility is designed to process up to 700,000 barrels of crude oil a day.
  • Project stage: Lamu held its groundbreaking in September 2026; production has not started.

Dangote Acquires Major Stake in Kenya Pipeline Company

Dangote confirmed the KPC purchase during an industry event in London on October 21, describing the acquisition as a way to strengthen the movement of refined petroleum products in East Africa.

Subsequent share transaction reporting identified the holding as 24.76%, making Dangote a significant shareholder in the company. Reports valued the block transaction at approximately KSh 42.5 billion, involving shares sold by public-sector investors.

KPC operates infrastructure that transports petroleum products within Kenya and into neighbouring markets. Ownership gives Dangote exposure to an established distribution network, although a shareholding does not automatically grant exclusive use of that infrastructure or control over fuel prices.

Africa-Wide Fuel Corridors Take Shape

Dangote’s expansion strategy extends beyond Kenya. He has outlined plans for petroleum storage and distribution facilities serving Southern Africa, including a Namibia-based supply hub intended to reach Botswana and South Africa, with links through Zambia and Zimbabwe.

In the Horn of Africa, a planned Djibouti–Ethiopia fuel pipeline is intended to improve fuel transport and storage. Its announced route connects Damerjog in Djibouti with Dewele in Ethiopia, while broader distribution ambitions extend toward the Ethiopian market.

The group has also discussed projects in Cameroon. These initiatives are at different stages, so their proposed benefits depend on financing, approvals, construction and eventual operations.

Lamu Refinery Could Transform Regional Fuel Supply

The pipeline purchase comes weeks after the September 30 refinery groundbreaking in Lamu County, attended by regional leaders. Kenya’s government says the proposed complex will have capacity to process up to 700,000 barrels a day, alongside supporting industrial and logistics facilities.

The planned Lamu investment has been valued at around KSh 2.2 trillion. Access to deep-water port infrastructure is a major consideration because the project is expected to source crude from multiple markets, rather than depend solely on Kenyan or Ugandan production.

If completed and commercially viable, the refinery could reduce dependence on imported finished fuels and support supply to East and Central Africa. However, capacity figures describe the design target, not current production, and the project’s costs, timeline and environmental implications remain material considerations.

What the Expansion Means for African Energy Markets

Dangote’s strategy links refining capacity with transport pipelines, depots and regional supply corridors. An integrated network could shorten delivery routes, improve fuel availability and support industrial growth in markets where logistics bottlenecks raise costs.

Yet stronger distribution infrastructure alone does not guarantee cheaper fuel. Prices will still depend on crude costs, taxes, exchange rates, competition and the terms under which pipelines and storage facilities are accessed.

The acquisition places Dangote in a stronger position to participate in East Africa’s petroleum supply chain, while the larger regional strategy remains dependent on successful delivery of several major projects.
