KCB Group plans to mobilize up to KSh300 billion over five years through a Medium Term Note Programme designed to finance eligible green, blue and social projects. An initial tranche of up to KSh100 billion is planned, subject to regulatory approvals and market conditions. The financing will target areas including renewable energy, green buildings, clean transportation, sustainable agriculture, water management, affordable housing and support for MSMEs, women and youth-led businesses.

Key Overview

  • KSh300 billion: Total planned five-year Medium Term Note Programme.
  • KSh100 billion: Maximum size of the initial tranche.
  • Three areas: Green, blue and social projects.
  • KSh187 billion+: Green loans disbursed by KCB from 2022.
  • KSh48.8 billion: Green financing provided during the last financial year.
  • Moody’s SQS 2: Sustainability Quality Score rated “Very Good.”

KCB Targets KSh300 Billion for Sustainable Finance

KCB Group plans to raise up to Sh300 billion over five years through a Medium Term Note Programme aimed at expanding financing for projects with environmental and social benefits.

The programme, unveiled in Nairobi alongside the launch of the KCB Sustainability Bond Framework, will initially have a tranche of up to Sh100 billion. Future issuances will depend on regulatory approvals and prevailing market conditions.

The framework provides KCB with a structured platform for mobilising long-term capital toward projects supporting Kenya and East Africa’s transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient and inclusive economy.

KCB Group Chief Executive Officer Paul Russo said the initiative builds on the bank’s long-term sustainability strategy and is intended to connect capital with projects capable of generating environmental and social benefits.

Financing Green, Blue and Social Projects

KCB sustainability bond framework directs financing to green, blue and social projects across Kenya and East Africa.

Under the framework, proceeds raised through the bonds will be ring-fenced for eligible green, blue and social projects.

Green financing will cover areas such as renewable energy, green buildings, clean transportation, sustainable agriculture and water management. The framework also provides for financing of climate-smart investments and other activities supporting environmental resilience.

The blue component will focus on the sustainable use and management of marine, coastal and freshwater resources. Potential areas include sustainable aquaculture and advanced wastewater management.

The social component will support affordable housing, MSMEs, women and youth-led enterprises, employment and livelihood creation.

This broad approach means the programme is not limited to financing renewable energy assets. It could also support infrastructure and businesses needed to make the wider transition more inclusive and resilient.

Sustainability Bond Framework Receives Moody’s “Very Good” Score

KCB’s Sustainability Bond Framework received a Sustainability Quality Score of SQS 2, rated “Very Good,” from Moody’s.

The framework establishes processes for identifying, evaluating and selecting eligible projects. It is structured around two approaches: Use of Proceeds and Sustainability-Linked Bonds.

The dual structure gives KCB flexibility in future bond issuances while establishing a framework for directing capital toward sustainability objectives.

According to KCB, the framework represents the next stage of a sustainability journey that formally began in 2008, when the Group adopted sustainability as part of its approach to doing business.

KCB Has Already Expanded Green Financing

The proposed bond programme builds on KCB’s existing green finance activity.

Since 2022, KCB Group has disbursed more than Sh187 billion in green loans, demonstrating its existing exposure to environmentally focused financing.

During the last financial year alone, the bank provided Sh48.8 billion in green financing across its regional markets.

The financing supported projects in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, green buildings, clean transportation, water management and climate-smart investments.

The new bond framework could therefore give KCB another source of long-term capital to expand these activities.

Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Among Key Opportunities

Renewable energy is expected to be an important area for the programme as Kenya and other East African markets continue expanding clean electricity generation.

However, financing generation capacity alone does not address all the region’s energy challenges. Investment is also required in transmission, distribution, energy efficiency, storage and productive uses of electricity.

The framework could provide an avenue for financing some of these supporting investments alongside renewable energy projects.

Water infrastructure represents another potential opportunity. Rapid urbanisation across East Africa is increasing demand for water supply, sanitation and wastewater infrastructure, while changing climate conditions are placing additional pressure on water resources.

Investment in resilient water infrastructure can therefore generate both environmental and social benefits.

Blue Economy and Social Infrastructure

The blue economy is another component of KCB’s sustainability financing strategy.

Eligible investments could support sustainable management of marine, coastal and freshwater ecosystems, including aquaculture and wastewater management. This could be particularly relevant to economic activities connected to the Indian Ocean and Lake Victoria.

The social component is designed to broaden access to capital beyond large infrastructure projects.

Funding for affordable housing, healthcare, MSMEs, women-led enterprises and youth-led businesses could help direct sustainable finance toward groups that may otherwise face financing constraints.

The framework also includes initiatives supporting employment and livelihood creation.

Supporting East Africa’s Sustainable Transition

The programme comes as governments and businesses across East Africa seek additional sources of financing for climate action, infrastructure and economic development.

Principal Secretary for Public Investments and Asset Management Cyrell Wagunda said sustainable bonds could help deepen Kenya’s capital markets and expand the pool of financing available for infrastructure, enterprises and climate-related priorities.

Principal Secretary for Blue Economy and Fisheries Betsy Njagi similarly highlighted the importance of partnerships between financial institutions and government in directing capital toward environmental resilience and inclusive growth.

For KCB, the sustainability bond framework provides a mechanism to connect its existing banking activities with the growing demand for sustainable finance.

Outlook

KCB Group’s proposed KSh300 billion sustainability bond programme could significantly expand the pool of capital available for green, blue and social investments in Kenya and the wider region.

The initial KSh100 billion tranche will be an important test of investor appetite, while future issuances could scale financing for renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, clean transportation, water infrastructure, affordable housing and inclusive enterprise development.

With more than KSh187 billion already disbursed in green loans since 2022, KCB enters the programme with an established sustainability-financing track record.

However, the planned issuances remain subject to regulatory approvals and market conditions. The effectiveness of the programme will ultimately depend on how successfully the funds are allocated to eligible projects and the measurable environmental and social outcomes generated.
