Range Rover Electric Marks First EV Launch
Range Rover has launched its first electric vehicle, marking a major shift for the British luxury SUV marque and its parent company, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).
The Range Rover Electric arrives a year later than originally planned and offers a greener option for customers seeking a large luxury SUV while remaining conscious of the climate crisis.
Orders are now open, with the vehicle carrying a starting price of £154,070. That makes it almost £50,000 more expensive than the standard combustion-engine version.
The vehicle is due to be built in Solihull, the home of the Range Rover marque since 1970.
The launch represents a milestone departure from vehicles powered by fossil fuels for JLR, which is owned by India’s Tata Motors but headquartered in Coventry in the UK.
Range Rover Electric Offers 599km Range

The new electric SUV can travel up to 599km on a single charge in testing conditions.
It uses a double-stacked 118.5kWh lithium-ion battery and 800-volt architecture. The company said a 10%-80% charge takes only 22 minutes, while 137 miles can be added in as little as 10 minutes at peak charging rates.
For customers in the US, a native North American Charging Standard (NACS) port comes as standard, allowing access to Tesla’s Supercharger network.
The vehicle can accelerate from zero to 60mph in 4.3 seconds, while Range Rover says it delivers the performance, comfort and capability expected from the brand.
Electric Range Rover Targets Luxury Market
The new model is designed to gauge demand in the high-end market for a large luxury electric vehicle as demand for battery-powered cars remains uneven, including among luxury automakers.
The Range Rover Electric is priced similarly to the electric Mercedes G 580 and is not far below ultra-luxury combustion models such as Bentley Motors’ Bentayga.
“We think that it’s competitively priced, and we think it positions Range Rover effectively in the US market,” chief operations officer Nigel Blenkinsop said in a Bloomberg TV interview.
The company aims to produce between 12,000 and 15,000 units in the next five to six months. It sold close to 200,000 Range Rover vehicles in 2025.
Electric Range Rover Maintains Off-Road Capability
Range Rover says customers have been asking for an electric Range Rover that maintains the experience associated with the brand.
“Range Rover clients have been telling us for some time that they want an electric Range Rover, but only if it delivers the same uncompromising experience they expect from the brand,” Martin Limpert, Range Rover managing director, told Yahoo Finance.
The vehicle can ford nearly three feet of water and climb 45-degree slopes using single-pedal driving.
It also features a traction system that reacts within 50 milliseconds, which the company said is around 100 times faster than a gas-powered Range Rover.
Martin Limpert said the vehicle was the result of a “decade of considered engineering and technological development.”

Testing and Staff Training
JLR said it had provided additional training to 10,500 staff working on the project.
The vehicle has also undergone testing equivalent to 38 trips around the world, which the company said was more than any other Range Rover.
JLR said the vehicle heralds “a new era of enhanced refinement and capability.”
The company is also offering a bespoke commissioning service, giving buyers an extended choice of paint colours and finishes, materials, tailored colour combinations and personalisation details including unique embroidery.
Range Rover Electric and Climate Considerations
The electric powertrain is expected to limit its impact on the environment compared with JLR’s petrol and diesel models.
However, the vehicle remains a large SUV, and SUVs of its size have been linked to higher numbers of road deaths in accidents involving pedestrians.
The launch comes as JLR seeks a more positive development following falling profits earlier in the year. The company has been dealing with the impact of Donald Trump’s tariff wars and supply chain disruption following a crippling cyber-attack last year.
For Range Rover, the launch provides an opportunity to bring its established luxury SUV proposition into the electric vehicle market.
EV Battery and Charging Technology
The EV battery is central to the vehicle’s electric powertrain, with its 118.5kWh capacity and 800-volt architecture supporting the stated range and charging performance.
The 22-minute 10%-80% charging time is one of the key specifications for customers considering the transition to electric driving.
The inclusion of NACS in the US also provides access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, expanding the charging options available to customers.
The vehicle combines these electric capabilities with Range Rover’s established focus on off-road performance and luxury.
Outlook
The Range Rover Electric marks Range Rover’s entry into the electric vehicle market with a £154,070 starting price, 599km testing range and 22-minute 10%-80% charging time.
With production planned in Solihull and an initial target of 12,000 to 15,000 vehicles over five to six months, the model will provide a test of demand for large premium electric SUVs.
Its 118.5kWh battery, 800-volt architecture, NACS charging port and off-road capabilities position the vehicle as a significant addition to JLR’s electrification plans.
