IONITY Expands EV Charging Network Into London

IONITY is expanding its EV charging network beyond motorway corridors with the opening of a new ultra-rapid charging hub at Greenwich Shopping Park in London.

The site is the first in a planned pipeline of urban charging hubs that IONITY intends to develop across the capital. The move reflects the company’s growing focus on placing ultra-rapid charging closer to where electric vehicle drivers live, work and shop.

Located on Bugsby’s Way, Greenwich Shopping Park is surrounded by supermarkets, shops, cafés and restaurants. The site is also close to The O2, Greenwich Peninsula and the A206, providing convenient access for residents, visitors and commercial drivers travelling across southeast London.

The new Greenwich EV charging hub has 12 charging bays, each capable of delivering charging speeds of up to 400 kW.

New 400 kW Chargers Target Faster Urban Charging

The introduction of 400 kW EV chargers is designed to reduce the amount of time drivers need to spend charging their vehicles.

IONITY says the new site is open to all electric vehicles, providing high-power charging for different types of EV users. The location is particularly relevant for drivers who need to combine charging with everyday activities such as shopping, dining or other errands.

Jeroen van Tilburg, CEO of IONITY, said the company’s expansion is moving beyond long-distance travel to meet increasing charging demand in urban areas.

The company believes cities will play an increasingly important role in the next stage of electric vehicle adoption as more drivers switch from conventional vehicles to EVs.

The Greenwich hub therefore represents more than an additional charging location. It forms part of IONITY’s broader strategy to build urban EV charging infrastructure capable of supporting growing demand.

IONITY and Uber Strengthen Urban EV Charging Partnership

The new site also supports IONITY’s partnership with Uber, which is aimed at accelerating electric mobility among ride-hailing drivers.

Uber drivers can be particularly dependent on reliable charging because they typically travel significantly more kilometres each day than private motorists and operate according to tightly scheduled routines.

For these drivers, access to ultra-fast charging can help reduce downtime and allow vehicles to return to service more quickly.

Under the partnership, IONITY provides attractive charging prices for Uber drivers while using real-world utilisation data to help identify locations where new charging infrastructure could have the greatest impact.

Uber’s utilisation commitments also provide greater confidence for investment in new charging sites.

The partnership supports Uber’s ambition to become a zero-emission platform by 2040, while contributing to London’s target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Free EV Charging Offered at Greenwich

To mark the opening, IONITY is offering drivers free charging at the Greenwich site for 24 hours on Friday, August 21, 2026.

Drivers can access the Free Friday promotion through the IONITY App.

The promotion is intended to introduce motorists to the new location while highlighting the availability of high-power charging in an urban setting.

The launch comes as demand for convenient charging locations continues to grow alongside EV adoption. While motorway charging remains important for long-distance journeys, drivers also require reliable charging options close to homes, workplaces, retail centres and other frequently visited destinations.

IONITY Plans More Urban Charging Hubs

IONITY plans more urban EV charging hubs across major UK cities, targeting 30% of its network in dense urban areas by 2030.

The Greenwich opening follows IONITY’s urban charging site at Birmingham Aston, which launched in February 2026.

The company is developing additional urban locations across London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh as it expands its UK charging footprint.

By 2030, around 30% of IONITY’s network is planned to be located in dense urban environments.

The strategy represents a significant shift from the company’s traditional focus on motorway corridors.

As EV ownership increases, urban areas are expected to require more charging capacity, particularly for drivers without convenient access to private home charging.

The expansion of EV charging infrastructure in London could therefore help address one of the practical challenges associated with the transition to electric mobility: ensuring drivers can access fast and reliable charging where they actually need it.

Why Urban EV Charging Matters

The growth of urban charging infrastructure is becoming increasingly important as electric vehicles become more common.

Motorway charging hubs are essential for long-distance journeys, but they do not address the needs of every EV driver. Urban motorists may rely on public charging because they live in apartments, lack private parking or cannot install a home charger.

Commercial drivers, including ride-hailing and delivery workers, can have even greater charging requirements because their vehicles remain in operation for much of the day.

IONITY’s strategy of combining high-power chargers with locations such as shopping centres could make charging more convenient by allowing drivers to recharge while completing other activities.

The Greenwich site demonstrates this approach by combining 400 kW charging technology with access to a major retail destination.

Outlook

IONITY’s new Greenwich hub signals the next phase of the company’s UK expansion, with the focus shifting from primarily motorway-based charging toward urban EV charging.

With 12 bays offering up to 400 kW, the site adds high-power charging capacity to southeast London while supporting the needs of private motorists and high-mileage commercial drivers.

IONITY’s planned expansion across London and other UK cities could significantly increase access to ultra-rapid charging over the coming years. Its target of locating around 30% of its network in dense urban areas by 2030 also highlights the growing importance of cities in the EV transition.

The success of these sites will depend on factors including EV adoption, utilisation rates, charging reliability and the availability of suitable locations. However, the Greenwich opening shows that the next stage of the charging market is increasingly moving closer to where drivers live and work.
