Bentley Enters the Fully Electric Market

British luxury carmaker Bentley Motors has launched its first fully electric vehicle, the Torcal, marking a major addition to its 107-year history.

The five-seat SUV becomes Bentley’s fourth model line, joining the Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga. It was designed and engineered at Bentley’s manufacturing site in Crewe, northwest England.

With a starting price of £173,000, the Torcal becomes the entry point to the Bentley range. The launch places Bentley in an increasingly competitive luxury electric vehicle market and follows Ferrari’s introduction of its first fully electric car, the Luce, three months earlier.

Designed as a Bentley First

Bentley is positioning the Torcal as an electric vehicle that retains the design and sensory characteristics associated with its combustion-engine models.

The SUV features diamond-shaped headlights designed to evoke a traditional front grille. Instead of a conventional radiator grille, the upright front end features an illuminated wall of acrylic crystals that lights up as the driver approaches.

The company has also incorporated distinctive sound features into the vehicle.

Rather than using a synthesised engine note, Bentley recorded instruments including orchestral timpani, viola and bass guitar to create what it calls a Dynamic Symphony. The sound responds to throttle input and can be intensified in Sport mode or switched off.

Bentley also recorded other sounds for the vehicle, including indicator sounds, the strike of a hammer on leather and a digital-assistant wake note inspired by running a finger around a crystal glass rim.

“Our intention was always to make a Bentley first,” Frank-Steffen Walliser, Bentley’s chairman and chief executive, said. “We feel people are not asking for a completely different car just because it’s electric.”

Torcal Performance and Range

Infographic showing the Bentley Torcal’s electric performance, including up to 375 miles of range, a 113 kWh battery, 400 kW charging, and up to 875 hp in the Torcal S.

The standard Torcal produces 810 hp and 880 lb-ft of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph.

The more powerful Torcal S produces 875 hp and 995 lb-ft of torque, giving it the highest torque output of any Bentley ever built.

The Torcal S can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 162 mph.

Bentley has deliberately limited the vehicle’s acceleration, noting that many of its customers could find more aggressive acceleration uncomfortable.

The vehicle uses a 113 kWh, 800-volt battery pack capable of providing up to 375 miles of range on the WLTP cycle.

DC fast charging at up to 400 kW can take the battery from 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes, while Bentley says approximately 100 miles of range can be added in seven minutes.

Luxury Materials and Comfort

Bentley is also using materials and interior features to differentiate the Torcal from other large electric SUVs.

The company developed what it describes as the first 100% Merino-wool automotive fabric with British textile maker Fox Brothers.

Another interior finish combines as many as 1,000 layers of walnut offcuts and recycled paper.

Customers can also select a glossy cabin finish called Cricket Ball.

The Torcal offers wellness seats with leg massage, a digital-detox mode and a “Refresh” setting designed to increase airflow. Optional sounds can also mimic the roar of a V8 engine.

Bentley Invests €350 Million in Crewe

The Torcal is the focal point of a €350 million investment in Bentley’s Crewe manufacturing site.

The investment comes as the British automotive industry faces high costs and post-Brexit barriers.

The launch also comes amid changes across the UK automotive industry. Jaguar Land Rover, described in the source as the country’s largest carmaker, recently unveiled its first electric Range Rover and said earlier this month that it would cut 4,000 jobs.

Bentley Targets Global Luxury EV Buyers

Bentley has been previewing the Torcal in Europe, the Middle East and US states with high EV adoption. A launch campaign in China is planned for next year.

Walliser said half of the early interest in the vehicle has come from existing Bentley customers, while approximately half has come from people new to the brand.

The company is therefore using the Torcal to introduce electric power to both its existing customer base and potential new buyers.

Outlook

The Torcal marks Bentley’s entry into fully electric vehicles while maintaining the luxury design, materials, performance and sensory features associated with the brand.

With a £173,000 starting price, up to 375 miles of WLTP range, 400 kW charging and a maximum output of 875 hp in the Torcal S, the model combines electric performance with Bentley’s luxury positioning.

The vehicle also represents a significant investment in Bentley’s Crewe manufacturing operations, with €350 million committed to the site.
