Türkiye plans to invest approximately $108 billion over the next 10 years to develop its alternative energy infrastructure and expand wind and solar capacity. Under its Renewable Energy 2035 Road Map, the country aims to reach 120 GW of installed wind and solar capacity, supported by $80 billion in generation investments and $28 billion in transmission infrastructure. Türkiye also plans to increase electrification to 35% of final energy demand by 2035 while continuing to develop oil and gas resources.

Key Overview

  • Türkiye targets 120 GW of installed wind and solar capacity by 2035.
  • Planned investment includes $80 billion in generation and $28 billion in transmission.
  • The country aims for electricity to meet 35% of final energy demand by 2035.
  • Türkiye is also continuing oil and gas exploration and development.
  • Wind and solar accounted for about 22% of electricity generation last year.
  • The country plans to strengthen its power grids alongside electrification and renewable energy growth.

Türkiye Targets $108 Billion Energy Infrastructure Investment

Türkiye plans to spend approximately $108 billion over the next ten years to develop its alternative energy infrastructure, targeting 120 GW of installed wind and solar capacity.

Under the country’s Renewable Energy 2035 Road Map, Energy Minister Arpaslan Bayraktar said Türkiye aims to reach 120 GW of installed wind and solar power.

“To achieve this, we project investments of approximately $80 billion in generation and $28 billion in transmission infrastructure,” Bayraktar said.

The investment plan includes expanding renewable generation while developing the transmission infrastructure required to connect that capacity and deliver electricity to consumers.

Türkiye’s plans also include greater electrification across transport, buildings and industry.

Country Targets 35% Electrification by 2035

Türkiye plans to cover as much as 35% of its final energy demand with electricity by 2035.

Environment Minister Murat Kurum said electrification would be one of the defining priorities of Türkiye’s COP31 presidency.

“By electrifying daily life, from transport to buildings and industry, we can protect families and businesses from volatile energy markets. This 35% by 2035 target will be one of the defining priorities of our COP31 presidency,” Kurum said.

Bayraktar also said electrification will be one of Türkiye’s key messages at COP31, which the country will host in Antalya.

“We have set an ambitious target of 35% electrification by 2035,” he said.

He added that Türkiye needs to develop strong power grids simultaneously to meet rising demand and safely integrate renewable energy sources.

“With COP31, we will bring the grid transformation required by electrification to the global agenda and offer Türkiye’s experience in this field to international cooperation,” Bayraktar said.

Grid Investment to Support Renewable Expansion

Of the planned $108 billion investment, $80 billion is allocated to generation and $28 billion to transmission infrastructure.

The grid investment is intended to support the integration of additional wind and solar generation and help electricity reach end consumers.

The investment plans are in line with European transition priorities around expanding renewable generation and upgrading grids to accommodate higher renewable output.

Türkiye has already expanded its overall electricity capacity significantly. Bayraktar said last month that the country’s installed electricity capacity had quadrupled from 32,000 megawatts to 126,000 megawatts over the 24 years since 2001.

He said Türkiye had commissioned approximately 96 GW of new capacity during that period and now has the third-largest installed generation capacity in Europe, after France and Germany.

Wind and Solar Expand Alongside Hydrocarbon Resources

Türkiye is continuing to develop renewable energy while also investing in oil and gas exploration and production.

The country’s state energy company, TPAO, operates the Sakarya gas field in the Black Sea, which is currently producing gas at a daily rate of 9.5 million cubic meters.

TPAO also has interests in Pakistan, Libya and Somalia and is exploring for oil and gas offshore Cyprus.

Türkiye already generates a significant share of its electricity from non-hydrocarbon sources. Hydropower accounts for around 17% of total generation, while wind and solar together accounted for approximately 22% last year.

Coal remains a significant part of the energy mix, accounting for around 34%.

Energy Security and the Transition

The country’s continued investment in oil and gas alongside renewable energy reflects its focus on energy security as it expands alternative energy infrastructure.

The source notes that energy market volatility has added momentum to transition efforts in countries investing heavily in renewable energy.

At the same time, the dependence of wind and solar generation on weather conditions means installed capacity does not necessarily translate directly into electricity generation. This makes grid development and other sources of generation important components of Türkiye’s energy plans.

Outlook

Türkiye’s $108 billion energy investment plan combines renewable generation, transmission infrastructure and greater electrification. The country aims to reach 120 GW of wind and solar capacity by 2035, while electricity is targeted to meet 35% of final energy demand.

Alongside renewable expansion, Türkiye continues to develop oil and gas resources and maintain other sources of electricity generation. Strengthening power grids will remain a central part of the country’s plans as it seeks to integrate additional renewable capacity and meet rising electricity demand.
