Stellantis has launched a one-year pilot project in Morocco to test an autonomous, solar-powered charging station for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Developed through its Star*Up intrapreneurship programme and installed at Motor Village Bouskoura, the station combines a photovoltaic canopy with battery energy storage and operates without a connection to the electricity grid. The pilot will test the system under real-world conditions and collect customer feedback to guide potential future deployments in remote and underserved areas.

Key Overview

  • Stellantis is testing an autonomous solar-powered charging station in Morocco.
  • The project is a one-year pilot developed through the Star*Up programme.
  • The station has four AC charging points delivering up to 19 kW.
  • It can charge up to eight PHEVs or three BEVs per day.
  • Repurposed Stellantis micromobility batteries store excess solar energy.
  • Potential future locations include rural communities, logistics centres, hotels and remote worksites.

Stellantis Tests Off-Grid Solar EV Charging in Morocco

Stellantis has launched a one-year pilot project in Morocco to test an autonomous solar-powered charging station for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The automaker developed the charging solution through its Star*Up intrapreneurship program, which allows employees to turn innovative ideas into business solutions. The project was developed by a Stellantis engineer in Morocco.

The first station has been installed at Motor Village Bouskoura, the company’s headquarters in Morocco, in partnership with local renewable energy company Solar Power.

The pilot is designed to test the technology under real-world conditions and gather customer feedback. The results will help guide potential future deployments, particularly in locations where access to charging infrastructure remains limited.

Solar Power CEO Imad El Idrissi said the partnership allows the companies to test an autonomous, off-grid model in remote and underserved areas of Morocco.

“This partnership allows us to test a truly autonomous, off-grid model under the conditions where it is most relevant—remote and underserved areas of Morocco. The results of this pilot project will directly inform decisions regarding the locations and methods for deploying this technology on a larger scale across the region,” El Idrissi said.

Solar Canopy and Battery Storage

The Stellantis charging station combines a photovoltaic canopy with an integrated battery energy storage system.

The solar canopy generates renewable electricity when sunlight is available, while the battery stores excess solar energy. This allows the station to provide charging during periods without sunlight.

The system includes four AC charging points for electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and micromobility solutions. The EV charging points can provide up to 19 kilowatts of power.

According to Stellantis, the station can charge up to eight plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) or three battery electric vehicles (BEVs) per day.

An intelligent system manages the energy flows independently of the electrical grid. The station requires no grid connection or authorization, with its plug-and-play design intended to allow rapid and flexible deployment.

Repurposed Vehicle Batteries Add Circular Economy Element

The battery storage system uses repurposed Stellantis micromobility batteries.

The batteries come from Stellantis’ light electric vehicles and are being given a second use instead of being sent directly for recycling.

The station also includes two standard 230V household outlets for charging micromobility vehicles.

Stellantis said the Fiat TRIS, for example, can charge from 20 to 80 percent in around four hours through one of the outlets.

The combination of solar generation and repurposed batteries gives the pilot a circular economy component while allowing the station to operate without relying on a conventional electricity-grid connection.

Potential Future Locations

Stellantis said the pilot will collect data and feedback over one year before the company decides whether to expand the system.

Potential locations include remote work sites, logistics centres, hotels and rural communities, where connecting charging infrastructure to the electricity grid can be difficult.

The system is also intended for sun-rich regions, isolated logistics platforms, worksites, hospitality venues and rural communities.

Through Star*Up, Stellantis said it continues to promote a culture of innovation aimed at shaping a safer, cleaner and more affordable future for mobility.

The project also forms part of the company’s wider push to develop electric mobility and reuse vehicle batteries.

Outlook

Stellantis will use the one-year pilot to assess the autonomous charging station under real-world conditions and gather customer feedback. The results will inform decisions on whether, where and how the technology could be deployed more broadly across the region.

The company’s existing presence in Morocco also includes a major vehicle plant in Kenitra, which produces vehicles for export to European, Middle Eastern and African markets.
