Thailand is widening the scope of its derivatives market to accommodate digital assets and carbon credits, marking another step in the country’s effort to integrate emerging assets into a regulated capital-market framework.

The move allows cryptocurrencies and digital tokens to serve as underlying products for derivatives while also establishing a clearer legal route for carbon-credit contracts. Regulators say the changes are intended to modernise the market, broaden investment and risk-management options, and ensure new products operate under appropriate investor-protection rules.

The initiative does not mean Thailand has legalised cryptocurrencies for everyday payments. Authorities continue to distinguish between digital assets used as investments and their direct use as a means of payment.

Key Overview

  • Thailand has expanded the assets that can underpin regulated derivatives to include cryptocurrencies and digital tokens.
  • Carbon credits can also form the basis of derivatives, including potentially physically delivered futures contracts.
  • The changes are intended to strengthen diversification, risk management and investor protection.
  • Regulators are working with the country’s futures exchange on appropriate specifications for digital-asset derivative contracts.
  • Rules are also being developed for intermediaries facilitating investment in overseas digital-asset derivatives.
  • Direct cryptocurrency payments for ordinary goods and services remain restricted.
  • The TouristDigiPay programme allows eligible foreign tourists to convert digital assets into Thai baht rather than paying merchants directly in crypto.

Thailand Expands Its Derivatives Framework

Thailand’s Cabinet approved a Finance Ministry proposal in February 2026 to expand the range of goods and variables permitted under the country’s Derivatives Act.

The change enables digital assets to serve as underlying products, providing the legal foundation for regulated derivative contracts linked to cryptocurrencies and digital tokens.

Thailand’s regulator said the expansion is designed to align its derivatives market more closely with international developments while bringing new products within a formal supervisory framework.

The policy could give investors additional methods to hedge exposure, manage volatility and diversify portfolios without necessarily holding digital assets directly.

By August 2026, the regulatory framework had progressed further, with cryptocurrencies and digital tokens formally identified as additional underlying products and variables under the existing derivatives legislation.

Authorities were also consulting on rules for overseas digital-asset derivatives, including how licensed intermediaries could facilitate clients’ access to such products while maintaining adequate investor safeguards.

Carbon Credits Join the Derivatives Market

Digital assets are only one part of Thailand’s derivatives expansion.

The regulatory changes also classify carbon credits as goods that can underpin derivative contracts. This treatment potentially allows both cash-settled contracts and physically delivered futures, creating a more structured mechanism for companies and investors seeking exposure to carbon markets.

The framework is intended to complement Thailand’s wider environmental and carbon-neutrality ambitions by supporting the development of a more organised carbon-credit trading ecosystem.

Bringing carbon credits into regulated derivatives markets could eventually give businesses additional tools to manage carbon-price exposure while improving price discovery and liquidity.

Regulators Work Toward Crypto Futures Products

Thailand’s regulators are now working with the country’s futures-market operator to determine how digital-asset derivative contracts should be structured.

That work includes developing appropriate contract specifications reflecting the distinctive risks of crypto assets, including high price volatility and round-the-clock underlying markets.

The regulator has confirmed that it is coordinating on digital-asset contract specifications to ensure new derivatives are suitable for practical market use.

The development represents a significant shift from treating cryptocurrencies primarily as assets traded on specialised digital exchanges toward allowing them to become underlying instruments within the traditional regulated derivatives ecosystem.

Crypto Investment Grows, but Payments Stay Restricted

Thailand’s increasingly accommodating approach toward digital-asset investment does not extend to unrestricted crypto payments.

Financial authorities have maintained a distinction between cryptocurrencies as investment assets and their use as substitutes for the Thai baht.

The country’s central bank continues to discourage digital assets as a means of payment, citing potential risks to monetary stability, payment-system efficiency, consumers and the broader financial system.

That distinction means regulated crypto investment can continue developing even while merchants generally receive payments in baht rather than Bitcoin, stablecoins or other digital assets.

TouristDigiPay Offers a Controlled Conversion Route

Thailand has nevertheless experimented with using digital assets to support tourism through a tightly regulated conversion model.

The TouristDigiPay sandbox, launched in 2025, allows eligible foreign tourists to convert digital assets into Thai baht through participating licensed providers.

Tourists do not pay merchants directly with cryptocurrency. Instead, digital assets are converted into baht, which can then be spent through approved electronic-payment channels such as Thai QR payments.

Participants are subject to Know Your Customer and Customer Due Diligence requirements, while digital-asset operators must comply with anti-money-laundering controls.

The programme demonstrates Thailand’s broader strategy: encouraging controlled experimentation with digital assets while keeping the baht at the centre of domestic payments.

Thailand Builds a More Integrated Digital Market

Thailand’s derivatives reforms show how its digital-asset policy is evolving beyond spot cryptocurrency trading.

The country is increasingly integrating digital assets into established financial-market structures while developing rules covering trading, derivatives, investor protection and anti-money-laundering requirements.

For investors and financial institutions, the most important development is not simply that cryptocurrencies can be traded. It is that digital assets are increasingly being recognised as an asset class capable of supporting regulated derivatives, portfolio hedging and institutional market infrastructure.

The eventual scale of Thailand’s crypto-derivatives market will depend on the final product specifications, licensing requirements and investor-protection measures that regulators and market operators introduce.
