Malaysia Expands EV Charging Network to 6,416 Public Chargers

Share
Malaysia expands its public EV charging network to 6,416 chargers nationwide, supporting electric vehicle adoption and the country's clean mobility transition.
Share

Malaysia has expanded its nationwide public EV charging network to 6,416 chargers as of May 2026 while accelerating efforts to achieve its target of 30,000 charging points by 2030. Alongside infrastructure development, the government is strengthening the domestic EV ecosystem through local manufacturing, technology transfer, and partnerships involving Perodua, Proton, global automakers, and Malaysian suppliers.

Key Overview

  • Malaysia has installed 6,416 public EV chargers nationwide.
  • The network includes 2,143 DC fast chargers and 4,273 AC chargers.
  • The government aims to deploy 30,000 public chargers by 2030.
  • Approval timelines for charging stations have been reduced to 14 working days.
  • Local EV manufacturing initiatives are strengthening Malaysia’s automotive supply chain.

Malaysia Accelerates Nationwide EV Charging Rollout

Malaysia continues to expand its electric vehicle infrastructure, with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) announcing that 6,416 public electric vehicle (EV) chargers had been installed nationwide as of May 31, 2026.

The nationwide charging network currently consists of 2,143 direct current (DC) fast chargers and 4,273 alternating current (AC) chargers, providing growing support for the country’s expanding electric vehicle market.

The latest figures demonstrate continued progress toward Malaysia’s long-term objective of creating a comprehensive charging network capable of supporting higher EV adoption across both urban and rural areas.

The expansion forms part of the government’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while encouraging cleaner transportation through improved charging accessibility and stronger domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Government Streamlines Charging Infrastructure Deployment

To accelerate charger deployment, the government has strengthened coordination among multiple public agencies and private-sector stakeholders.

A key initiative has been the introduction of the EV Charging Bay Planning Guidelines by PLANMalaysia, which significantly reduces approval timelines for new charging facilities.

According to MITI, the revised framework allows approvals to be completed in as little as 14 working days, helping charging point operators deploy infrastructure more quickly.

The accelerated approval process is supported through close collaboration among:

  • PLANMalaysia
  • Energy Commission
  • Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB)
  • Local authorities
  • Charging Point Operators (CPOs)
  • EV Charging Industry Association
  • Malaysia Zero Emission Vehicle Association

The whole-of-government approach aims to remove administrative bottlenecks while supporting faster nationwide deployment of charging infrastructure.

Malaysia Targets 30,000 Public Chargers by 2030

Infographic showing Malaysia's expansion to 6,416 public EV chargers and its target of 30,000 charging stations by 2030.

Although charging infrastructure has expanded steadily, the government acknowledges additional investment is needed to meet future demand.

Malaysia previously targeted 10,000 public EV chargers by the end of 2025, but deployment reached 5,624 chargers by December 31, 2025.

The country has since increased the network to 6,416 chargers, while setting a significantly more ambitious target of 30,000 charging facilities by 2030.

Government officials say achieving this goal will require continued cooperation with utilities, particularly Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), to expand electricity infrastructure capable of supporting high-powered charging stations.

The construction of additional substations remains a priority to ensure sufficient electricity supply for future fast-charging networks.

Government Strengthens Domestic EV Manufacturing

Alongside charging infrastructure, Malaysia is accelerating development of its domestic electric vehicle industry through strategic industrial partnerships.

MITI said the government is strengthening cooperation between local suppliers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and international technology companies to accelerate technology transfer and expand local production capabilities.

Priority areas include manufacturing of:

  • EV batteries
  • Electric drive motors
  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
  • High-value automotive components

These initiatives form part of the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, which seeks to position Malaysia as a regional hub for advanced automotive manufacturing.

Perodua and Proton Drive Local EV Supply Chain

Malaysia’s National EV Project, led by Perodua, has already brought together 62 local supplier companies alongside more than 300 automotive Malaysian engineers and automotive specialists working on the country’s national electric vehicle programme.

At the same time, Proton’s EV project aims to integrate 40 local companies into its supply chain, expanding opportunities for local manufacturers to participate in the global EV industry.

According to MITI, these initiatives are expected to strengthen domestic industrial capabilities while helping Malaysian suppliers compete internationally through greater exposure to advanced manufacturing technologies and global automotive standards.

The strategy also supports long-term job creation, engineering expertise, and industrial competitiveness within Malaysia’s growing clean mobility sector.

EV Ecosystem Expands Beyond Charging Infrastructure

The government’s EV strategy extends beyond increasing charger numbers.

Officials say continued investment in infrastructure, manufacturing, supply chains, and technology transfer will create a more balanced EV ecosystem capable of supporting long-term industry growth.

By simultaneously expanding charging availability and strengthening local production capacity, Malaysia aims to reduce reliance on imported technologies while encouraging greater consumer confidence in electric mobility.

The National EV Task Force (NEVTF) continues monitoring infrastructure deployment to ensure charging expansion keeps pace with increasing EV adoption across the country.

Outlook

Malaysia’s expansion to 6,416 public EV chargers reflects steady progress toward building a nationwide electric mobility ecosystem, although significant investment will still be required to achieve the country’s target of 30,000 public chargers by 2030. Faster approval processes, stronger collaboration with utilities, and continued investment in charging infrastructure are expected to accelerate deployment over the coming years. At the same time, initiatives led by Perodua, Proton, and local suppliers demonstrate Malaysia’s ambition to strengthen its domestic EV manufacturing capabilities while positioning the country as an increasingly competitive player in the regional electric vehicle value chain.
