Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has strengthened Grid Reliability by successfully energizing the Isinya-Konza Transmission Line and Konza Substation. The Sh84 billion project enhances electricity transmission capacity, improves network stability, and delivers reliable power to Konza Technopolis and surrounding regions. The infrastructure is expected to support industrial growth, attract investment, and accelerate the development of Kenya’s flagship smart city.

Key Overview

  • KETRACO has energized the Isinya-Konza transmission project
  • The project cost approximately Sh84 billion
  • Infrastructure includes a 400kV transmission line and major substations
  • Konza Technopolis will benefit from improved power reliability
  • Project supports industrial, commercial, and residential growth
  • Renewable energy sources will help power Konza Technopolis
  • The project strengthens Kenya’s national transmission network

Konza Power Infrastructure Boosted by Sh84bn Grid Project

Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has successfully energized the Isinya-Konza transmission project, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen electricity supply and support long-term economic growth.

The Sh84 billion infrastructure project includes the energization of the 400kV Isinya-Konza Transmission Line and the 400/132/66kV Konza Substation, significantly enhancing the country’s power transmission capabilities.

The development is expected to improve electricity reliability across the lower eastern region while providing the energy capacity required to support the continued growth of Konza Technopolis, Kenya’s flagship smart city project.

Strengthening Kenya’s Transmission Network

The project represents a major investment in the country’s Electricity Transmission Network, designed to improve power delivery, increase system stability, and support growing energy demand.

The infrastructure consists of a 48-kilometre 400kV double-circuit transmission line, two 350MVA 400/132kV transformers, and two 75MVA 132/66kV transformers.

According to KETRACO, the project enhances power transfer capability across the national grid while providing greater operational flexibility and resilience.

The transmission line will facilitate more efficient evacuation and distribution of electricity across Kajiado, Machakos, and Makueni counties, supporting households, businesses, and industrial consumers.

KETRACO Acting Managing Director Engineer Kipkemoi Kibias described the project as a strategic investment in Kenya’s long-term economic transformation.

“The successful energization of the Isinya-Konza Transmission Line and Konza Substation strengthens the reliability of the national grid and guarantees quality power supply to Konza Technopolis and surrounding areas,” Kibias said.

Supporting Smart City Development

Reliable electricity remains one of the most critical requirements for successful Smart City Development, and the project is expected to play a central role in supporting Konza Technopolis.

Konza Technopolis is one of Kenya’s flagship Vision 2030 projects and is intended to position the country as a regional center for technology, innovation, research, and advanced manufacturing.

As investment in the city continues to grow, demand for reliable and high-capacity electricity infrastructure is expected to increase significantly.

The newly energized infrastructure provides the capacity needed to support industrial parks, technology centers, residential developments, and commercial facilities planned within the smart city.

Government officials believe reliable electricity will strengthen investor confidence and accelerate economic activity within the region.

Renewable Energy to Power Konza

Konza Technopolis is powered by renewable energy from wind, geothermal, and hydropower sources through Kenya’s upgraded transmission network.

A major advantage of the project is its ability to deliver a diversified Renewable Energy Supply to Konza Technopolis.

The smart city will receive electricity generated from some of Kenya’s largest renewable energy projects, including the Kipeto Wind Power Project, the Olkaria geothermal plants, and the Lake Turkana Wind Power Project.

Power will be transmitted through the national grid using the Suswa and Isinya 400kV substations before reaching Konza.

The city will also benefit from regional power interconnections, including hydroelectric imports from Ethiopia.

This diversified energy mix is expected to provide a stable, sustainable, and reliable source of electricity capable of supporting long-term growth while contributing to Kenya’s clean energy ambitions.

Economic and Industrial Impact

The transmission project is expected to generate benefits beyond Konza Technopolis.

Improved electricity infrastructure will support new industrial, commercial, and residential developments throughout the lower eastern region.

KETRACO says the project will reduce network congestion, improve power quality, and strengthen overall reliability across the national grid.

The additional transmission capacity is also expected to facilitate industrialization, attract new investments, and create opportunities for economic expansion.

Reliable electricity remains a key factor in attracting manufacturers, technology firms, and large-scale investors seeking stable operating environments.

A Strategic Investment for Vision 2030

The project aligns closely with Kenya’s Vision 2030 development agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure investment as a driver of economic growth and competitiveness.

Funded jointly by the Export-Import Bank of China and the Government of Kenya, the project was implemented by China Aerospace Construction Group Company Limited.

KETRACO noted that the investment demonstrates its continued commitment to developing a robust transmission system that supports economic growth, regional integration, and universal access to reliable electricity.

Outlook

The successful energization of the Isinya-Konza transmission project represents a significant step forward for Kenya’s energy sector and development ambitions. By strengthening transmission capacity and improving grid reliability, the project provides the foundation needed to support Konza Technopolis and surrounding regions.

As Kenya continues investing in modern infrastructure and renewable energy, the project is expected to play a vital role in attracting investment, accelerating industrialization, and positioning the country as a leading technology and innovation hub in Africa.
