Gold slipped below the $4,300 level during Friday’s early Asian trading, extending its recent weakness as investors reacted to rising oil prices, elevated US Treasury yields and mounting expectations that the Federal Reserve could tighten monetary policy again.

Spot gold moved toward $4,275, with the precious metal struggling against a backdrop of higher borrowing costs and a firmer outlook for US interest rates. While geopolitical uncertainty continues to provide some underlying safe-haven support, the near-term market narrative has shifted toward inflation risks and the possibility of additional Fed tightening.

Key Overview

  • Gold weakened to around $4,275 during early Asian trading on Friday.
  • Rising oil prices have renewed concerns that energy costs could keep US inflation elevated.
  • Expectations of additional Federal Reserve rate increases are increasing the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold.
  • Long-term US Treasury yields have climbed sharply, adding pressure on bullion.
  • Chinese physical and official-sector demand remains an important structural support for gold.
  • Technical indicators suggest gold retains a bearish near-term bias below its 100-day moving average.

Higher Oil Prices Revive Inflation Concerns

Gold’s latest decline comes as oil prices moved higher amid persistent uncertainty surrounding US-Iran relations and broader Middle East supply risks.

Energy prices matter significantly for the gold market because sustained increases can feed through to transportation, production and consumer costs. That can make inflation more difficult for central banks to contain and, in turn, strengthen the case for maintaining restrictive monetary policy.

The Federal Reserve already faces an inflation environment that remains above its long-term 2% objective. Policymakers have consequently continued to signal that further tightening may be necessary if price pressures fail to moderate sufficiently.

That combination has created an unusual challenge for gold. Although bullion is traditionally considered an inflation hedge, higher interest rates can simultaneously undermine its appeal because gold generates no interest income.

Treasury Yields Add Pressure to Bullion

Higher US government bond yields have added another headwind. Federal Reserve data show the 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.40% on September 23, while the 20-year yield climbed to 5.45%.

Those levels significantly increase the opportunity cost of holding gold compared with interest-bearing assets such as government bonds.

The same dynamic has been visible throughout September. Gold has repeatedly come under pressure when markets increase expectations of further policy tightening, particularly when those expectations are accompanied by higher Treasury yields and a stronger US dollar.

Expectations surrounding the Fed’s next moves remain a major driver of precious-metal prices. Recent commentary from policymakers has reinforced the view that inflation remains the central concern.

Fed Keeps Door Open to Additional Tightening

Several Federal Reserve officials have highlighted the risk that persistent inflation could require further policy action.

Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack has previously argued that inflation pressures remain broad based, with elevated oil prices creating an additional source of upward pressure.

Similar concerns have emerged across the Federal Reserve system. St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem recently said additional rate increases may be needed to contain persistent inflation caused by strong demand and supply-side pressures.

The combination of firm economic activity and stubborn price growth leaves policymakers balancing the risk of tightening too aggressively against the possibility that inflation remains above target for too long.

For gold investors, this means monetary policy expectations may remain one of the market’s most important short-term catalysts.

China Remains a Major Source of Gold Demand

Despite pressure from US interest rates, Chinese demand continues to provide a powerful structural pillar for the gold market.

During the first eight months of 2026, China imported more than 1,100 tonnes of gold, with the value of imports reaching roughly $158.8 billion. That already exceeded China’s total imports during 2025.

Investment demand has been particularly important, even as jewellery consumption has faced pressure from historically elevated prices.

China’s role therefore creates an important counterbalance to the monetary-policy headwinds affecting bullion. Strong physical buying and continued institutional demand could help limit deeper declines if international investment flows weaken.

Technical Picture Remains Bearish Below $4,310

From a technical perspective, gold continues to trade below its 100-day moving average and below the middle Bollinger Band, keeping the short-term bias tilted toward the downside.

The Relative Strength Index remains near 44, indicating negative momentum but not yet signalling deeply oversold conditions.

Immediate resistance sits around $4,310, near the 100-day moving average. Above that level, approximately $4,360 represents another important resistance zone, followed by the upper Bollinger Band near $4,480.

On the downside, approximately $4,240 represents the first major support area. A sustained daily break below that level could expose gold to a deeper retracement.

The broader outlook remains divided between two powerful forces: restrictive US monetary policy and elevated bond yields on one side, and strong physical demand, geopolitical uncertainty and continued central-bank interest in gold on the other.
