Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery reported a $4.73 billion net profit for the nine months ended September 30, 2026, reversing a $117.2 million loss recorded in the same period of 2025. Its unaudited financial results showed revenue more than doubling to $22.48 billion, supported by higher crude processing volumes, improved operating reliability and stronger refining margins.

The turnaround comes as the refinery prepares to raise approximately $1.6 billion through an initial public offering (IPO), potentially expanding investor ownership of one of Africa’s largest industrial projects. The latest numbers also point to stronger cash generation, although the results have not yet been audited.

Key Overview

  • Net profit: $4.73 billion in January–September 2026, compared with a $117.2 million loss a year earlier.
  • Revenue: $22.48 billion, up approximately 144% from $9.19 billion.
  • EBITDA: $5.52 billion, compared with $627.6 million in the first nine months of 2025.
  • Operating cash flow: $3.68 billion, up from $364.7 million.
  • Financial position: $6.69 billion in cash and a reported $650.8 million net cash position, compared with net debt of $1.73 billion a year earlier.

Revenue Growth and Higher Refining Margins Drive Earnings

The nine-month earnings breakdown shows that Dangote’s revenue increased by approximately 144% year on year, reflecting a combination of increased refining activity and better commercial performance. The company also benefited from firmer margins, meaning it earned more from processing and selling petroleum products relative to its operating costs.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose almost ninefold to $5.52 billion. Its EBITDA margin expanded from 6.83% to 24.56%, suggesting that operating profitability improved significantly rather than revenue growth alone driving the results.

In discussing the operational turnaround, chief executive David Bird attributed the performance to the transition from commissioning and initial ramp-up to more established commercial operations. EBITDA, however, is not the same as net income or cash available for distribution to shareholders.

Cash Flow Strengthens as Net Debt Turns to Net Cash

The refinery generated $3.68 billion in operating cash flow, compared with $364.7 million a year earlier. Its cash holdings increased from $809.5 million to $6.69 billion, giving the business greater reported liquidity as it pursues expansion.

The balance-sheet figures also show a swing from $1.73 billion in net debt at September 2025 to $650.8 million in net cash at September 2026. Net cash means cash exceeds the debt captured by the company’s net-debt measure; it does not mean the refinery has no liabilities or future funding commitments.

These improvements may strengthen its ability to fund investment, but investors will still need audited accounts and more detailed disclosures to assess recurring earnings and balance-sheet risks.

Regional Fuel Demand Supports Expansion Plans

Built at an estimated cost of $20 billion near Lagos, the refinery began operations in 2024 and has helped Nigeria reduce its dependence on imported refined fuels. It has also supplied products to regional and overseas markets, including jet fuel sold into Western Europe during global supply disruptions associated with the Iran war.

The facility has approximately 700,000 barrels per day of refining capacity, a measure of what it is equipped to process rather than confirmation of its daily output throughout the reporting period. Dangote aims to expand that capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2029, alongside efforts to broaden its product range and distribution network.

$1.6 Billion IPO Places Results Under Investor Scrutiny

The results arrive during a major share offering intended to raise roughly $1.6 billion, with a possible increase to approximately $2.1 billion if the over-allotment option is exercised. The subscription period was extended to October 27, 2026, giving prospective investors additional time to complete the necessary procedures.

The offer seeks to widen ownership among African investors, but cross-border securities rules have complicated participation outside Nigeria. The share sale was not registered as a public offering in every country, meaning eligibility depends on relevant local regulations and authorised channels.

The central investment question is whether higher refining volumes, favourable product margins and stronger cash generation can be sustained after unusual market conditions ease. The nine-month results provide encouraging evidence of improved operations, but the figures remain unaudited and do not guarantee future profitability.
