BBVA Expands Climate Fund Investments
BBVA has reached €560 million in committed investments in climate funds, strengthening its role in financing the global energy transition.
The Spanish banking group now invests in eleven climate funds specializing in decarbonization, managed by some of the world’s leading international investment platforms. Through these investments, BBVA gains exposure to technologies and companies working to reduce emissions while developing relationships with major asset managers.
The bank’s latest investment is a €15 million ($17 million) investment in an EQT fund, bringing its total climate fund commitments to €560 million.
Rather than focusing solely on financial returns, BBVA says its strategy also creates opportunities to identify emerging technologies, projects and companies that could eventually require additional banking and financing services.
Strategy Shifts Toward Scalable Climate Solutions
BBVA’s climate investment strategy has evolved since its initial entry into the climate ecosystem.
During its earlier phase, the bank focused on building experience and establishing relationships across the climate investment market. It is now placing greater emphasis on more mature and scalable platforms that can support bankable projects and accelerate commercial growth.
Over the past two years, BBVA has quadrupled its commitments to decarbonization funds.
The shift reflects the bank’s broader objective of connecting investment capital with companies and projects capable of delivering practical energy transition solutions.
By investing alongside specialist fund managers, BBVA can gain exposure to sectors where technologies are developing rapidly while creating relationships that could eventually support additional financing.
KKR and Alterra Partnerships Expand Capital Deployment
BBVA’s climate fund activity has accelerated through partnerships with major international investment managers.
In September 2024, the bank committed €175 million to KKR. The investment supports funds focused on deploying climate solutions, developing decarbonization technologies and transforming industries with high emissions.
BBVA subsequently announced a strategic alliance with Alterra, including an investment commitment of €220 million.
These larger commitments demonstrate the bank’s increasing focus on established investment platforms capable of deploying significant amounts of capital into energy transition opportunities.
The strategy also allows BBVA to diversify its exposure across different technologies, investment stages and climate-related sectors.
BBVA Builds a Diversified Climate Portfolio
BBVA’s climate investments cover a broad range of technologies and sectors.
During the previous year, the bank allocated €18 million to Apollo Global, whose fund supports established companies seeking to transition toward lower-emission business models.
BBVA also invested €9 million in NIO Capital, which focuses on early- and expansion-stage companies operating across digitalization, decarbonization and artificial intelligence.
In 2024, BBVA committed another €22 million to TPG Rise Climate II, targeting areas including clean electricity, clean molecules and materials, as well as climate adaptation solutions.
Earlier investments made between 2022 and 2023 established much of the bank’s climate fund portfolio.
Investments Span Key Decarbonization Technologies

The portfolio includes funds focused on several areas of the energy transition.
BBVA has invested €40 million in Lowercarbon, €22 million in Decarbonization Partners, €18 million in Just Climate, €10 million in Hy24, €9 million in Fifth Wall Climate and €4 million in Suma Capital.(BBVA)
These investments provide exposure to sectors including green hydrogen, carbon capture, nuclear fusion, real estate decarbonization, hard-to-abate industries, biogas and the circular economy.
The approach gives BBVA access to specialist investment managers while spreading capital across different technologies and business models.
For the bank, the objective is not simply to invest in climate funds but to develop an ecosystem that can generate future financing opportunities for companies progressing through the energy transition.

Sustainable Business Reaches New High
The climate fund strategy forms part of BBVA’s wider sustainability agenda.
The bank channeled 134 billion euros in sustainable business in 2025 , a record annual figure and a 44% increase from the previous year.
In the second quarter of 2026, BBVA recorded another 82 billion euros in sustainable business. From 2025 through that quarter, cumulative sustainable business reached 216 billion euros toward the bank’s goal of mobilizing €700 billion over the 2025–2029 horizon.
This broader financing target demonstrates the scale of BBVA’s ambition beyond its direct investments in climate funds.
The bank’s fund strategy can therefore be viewed as one component of a much larger effort to direct capital toward sustainable economic activity.
BBVA to Support COP31 Climate Finance Efforts
BBVA has also confirmed its participation as a (Global Banking Partner) of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP31) scheduled to take place in Antalya, Türkiye, from November 9 to 20, 2026.
Through the partnership, BBVA says it will work with the COP31 presidency and the United Nations to promote energy transition financing and accelerate the implementation of solutions supporting a low-carbon economy.
The involvement provides another platform for the bank to position climate finance as a central component of its global strategy.
European Banks Increase Climate Investment
BBVA’s expansion into climate funds comes amid a broader movement among European banks to increase their involvement in the energy transition.
Other major financial institutions are also developing dedicated strategies focused on climate-related private equity, infrastructure and investment funds.
BNP Paribas operates a dedicated Climate & Green Finance Practice, while Deutsche Bank and CaixaBank have also made investments in climate-focused funds.
The growing involvement of banks could help connect institutional capital with emerging technologies and companies that require substantial financing to reach commercial scale.
Outlook
BBVA’s €560 million investment across 11 climate funds highlights the bank’s growing focus on using investment platforms to support decarbonization and the energy transition.
The strategy has increasingly shifted toward mature and scalable funds, while its portfolio covers technologies ranging from clean energy and hydrogen to carbon capture, circular economy solutions and climate adaptation.
The bank’s broader sustainable business target of €700 billion by 2029 also suggests that climate fund investments will remain part of a much larger capital-mobilization strategy.
As climate technologies move from development toward commercial deployment, BBVA’s relationships with specialist fund managers could create additional opportunities to finance companies and projects as they scale.
