Aldi is expanding its electric vehicle charging capabilities across the UK through a new partnership with Drax Electric Vehicles. The initiative strengthens the retailer’s EV Charging Infrastructure by transitioning around 1,200 chargers across more than 250 stores and installing additional charging facilities at new locations. The rollout supports growing demand for convenient charging solutions while helping customers power their vehicles during everyday shopping trips.

Aldi Strengthens UK EV Charging Presence

Aldi is expanding its electric vehicle charging network across the United Kingdom through a new partnership with Drax Electric Vehicles, making it easier for customers to charge their cars while shopping.

Under the agreement, approximately 1,200 electric car chargers located at more than 250 Aldi stores have transitioned to Drax, a company specializing in EV charging infrastructure and services.

The move forms part of Aldi’s broader sustainability strategy and reflects the increasing importance of accessible charging facilities as electric vehicle adoption continues to grow across the UK.

By expanding charging availability at its stores, Aldi aims to offer customers a convenient and affordable charging option that fits naturally into their daily routines.

New Chargers Added Across the UK

As part of the rollout, Aldi has already installed new charging facilities at more than 30 stores nationwide.

Recent installations include locations in Diss, Norfolk, Eastbourne, Durham, and Yate near Bristol.

The supermarket chain said the new charging facilities are intended to improve access for drivers and support the growing number of electric vehicle owners across the country.

The expansion also demonstrates how major retailers are increasingly incorporating sustainability initiatives into their operations while enhancing customer convenience.

Investment in Future Growth

In addition to upgrading its existing network, Aldi plans to install charging facilities at approximately 20 new stores every year.

The commitment aligns with the retailer’s ongoing expansion plans across the United Kingdom.

All newly constructed Aldi locations will feature a combination of Electric Vehicle Chargers designed to accommodate different charging needs and shopping durations.

Each new site will include two AC fast chargers supporting four charging bays with speeds of up to 22kW.

Stores may also feature up to two DC rapid chargers serving four bays with charging capabilities of up to 160kW.

This mix of charging options allows customers to choose a charging solution that best matches their journey requirements and time spent in-store.

Supporting the Growth of EV Charging Stations UK

The expansion contributes to the broader development of EV Charging Stations UK, which continue to play a critical role in supporting the country’s transition to cleaner transportation.

The UK government has set a target to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, increasing the importance of accessible and reliable charging infrastructure.

Retail locations have become increasingly attractive charging destinations because they allow drivers to combine vehicle charging with routine activities such as grocery shopping.

As more consumers switch to electric vehicles, supermarkets and other commercial operators are expected to play a larger role in expanding the national charging network.

Competitive Charging Prices

Aldi said charging prices have been set at competitive levels to help make electric vehicle ownership more affordable.

Fast charging is priced at 40p per kWh, while Rapid EV Charging is available at 62p per kWh.

Customers can access charging services through the Charge Assist mobile application, which allows users to check charger availability, monitor costs, and complete payments.

Drivers can also pay using contactless card payment directly at the charging stations, eliminating the need for subscriptions or membership programs.

The simplified payment options are intended to improve convenience and encourage broader use of the charging network.

Sustainability Remains a Key Focus

Aldi said the charging expansion supports its commitment to making sustainable choices more accessible for customers.

Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, said many consumers are looking for affordable, reliable, and convenient charging solutions.

“We’re committed to making sustainable choices more accessible for our customers, and we know many are looking for affordable, reliable and convenient ways to charge their cars,” Neale said.

“By expanding EV charging at more of our stores, we’re helping to make that easier – and offering great-value charging while they shop.”

The initiative also supports broader efforts to reduce transportation emissions and accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles throughout the UK.

Outlook

Aldi’s partnership with Drax Electric Vehicles represents a significant expansion of charging infrastructure across its UK store network. With approximately 1,200 chargers already operating across more than 250 locations and plans to add charging facilities at around 20 new stores annually, the retailer is positioning itself as an important contributor to the UK’s electric mobility transition.

As electric vehicle adoption continues to rise, convenient charging options at everyday destinations such as supermarkets are expected to become increasingly valuable. Aldi’s growing charging network helps address that demand while supporting sustainability goals and enhancing the customer experience.
