HSBC Launches RedCoin Stablecoin for 3.3M PayMe Users
Share

HSBC has launched HSBC RedCoin (RCHKD), its first stablecoin, on its PayMe payments app in Hong Kong. The phased rollout began on 23 October 2026. The Hong Kong dollar-denominated token is licensed and regulated by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). More than 3.3 million PayMe users can activate a stablecoin wallet to send money to other users and pay at more than 100,000 merchants. HSBC plans to add RedCoin to its Hong Kong mobile banking app by the end of 2026. Customers will then be able to buy tokenised investments, starting with a money market fund from HK$100.

Key Overview

  • Token: HSBC RedCoin (RCHKD), pegged one-to-one to the Hong Kong dollar.
  • Regulator: Hong Kong Monetary Authority, under the Stablecoins Ordinance.
  • Launch: Phased rollout on PayMe from 23 October 2026.
  • Reach: More than 3.3 million PayMe users and 100,000-plus merchants.
  • Next phase: Wallet in the HSBC HK Mobile Banking App before end-2026.
  • Investments: Tokenised money market fund subscriptions from HK$100.
  • Rival issuer: Anchorpoint Financial, issuer of the HKDAP stablecoin.

HSBC Brings Stablecoins to a Mainstream Payments App

HSBC has launched its first stablecoin, HSBC RedCoin, on PayMe. The token is denominated in Hong Kong dollars and regulated by the HKMA, which granted HSBC a stablecoin issuer licence in April. RedCoin trades under the ticker RCHKD.

The rollout is phased, so not every user had access on day one. HSBC expected the service to reach its full PayMe user base before the weekend, after the launch began on 23 October. Users activate a RedCoin wallet by updating the app. There is no minimum balance or extra account-opening step.

The launch puts a regulated stablecoin inside an everyday consumer payments product at one of Hong Kong’s largest banks. HSBC says the token meets the financial crime control standards required under the city’s Stablecoins Ordinance.

How RedCoin Works on PayMe

At launch, RedCoin supports two uses: sending money to friends and family, and paying merchants that accept PayMe. Lawrence Li, head of PayMe, said HSBC designed the experience to feel like the payments customers already make.

HSBC’s RedCoin product page says the stablecoin is only available through official HSBC channels: PayMe now and the HSBC HK App soon. It warns customers about fraudulent tokens claiming a link to the bank. HSBC says RedCoin is not offered through any third-party platform.

Several design choices set RedCoin apart from typical crypto stablecoins, according to crypto.news:

  • Own ledger: RedCoin runs on HSBC’s own distributed ledger network, where smart contracts handle token creation and transfers.
  • Redeemable at par: Each token is redeemable one-for-one for Hong Kong dollars, subject to terms.
  • No deposit insurance: RedCoin wallets are not ordinary deposit accounts and are not covered by Hong Kong’s Deposit Protection Scheme.
  • Separate wallets: Users can’t move RedCoin directly between the PayMe wallet and the future banking-app wallet.

For merchants, little changes at first. Settlement will follow existing Hong Kong dollar payment schedules.

Reserves and Early Circulation

HSBC has begun publishing reserve data. Its 23 October disclosure showed HK$80.58 million of RedCoin in circulation, backed by HK$81.58 million in reserves held in cash. That leaves reserves about HK$1 million above the outstanding tokens. HSBC says it will publish regular independent attestations, with the first expected after the fourth quarter of 2026.

The circulation figure is a first measure of issuance, not adoption. HSBC has not disclosed how many PayMe users have activated wallets or how many transactions have been completed.

HSBC Digital Assets Custody provides safekeeping for RedCoin. Before launch, the bank ran staff pilots with nearly 100 users, testing everything from minting and wallet activation to live transfers.

Tokenised Investments Come Next

The second phase moves RedCoin into investing. HSBC plans to add the stablecoin wallet to its HSBC HK Mobile Banking App before the end of 2026. Customers will then be able to subscribe to tokenised investment products using RedCoin.

The first planned product is a new tokenised share class of HSBC’s Hong Kong dollar money market fund, with subscriptions starting at HK$100, about $12.75. HSBC also plans to support tokenised gold and investment products from third-party institutions later. It has not given dates for those products.

HSBC is also looking beyond retail. John O’Neill, Managing Director of Digital Assets and Currencies at HSBC, said “This is only the beginning”. He added that the bank will expand into wholesale corporate and institutional use cases.

Hong Kong’s Licensed Stablecoin Market Takes Shape

RedCoin is one of the first products under Hong Kong’s stablecoin regime. The city’s framework took effect on 1 August 2025 and requires issuers of fiat-referenced stablecoins to be licensed. The HKMA granted its first licences on 10 April 2026, to HSBC and to Anchorpoint Financial. Anchorpoint is a venture involving Standard Chartered Hong Kong, Animoca Brands and HKT.

Anchorpoint’s HKDAP stablecoin launched first, in August, through a controlled rollout aimed at institutions and professional investors. HSBC’s move into PayMe gives the city its first licensed stablecoin in a mass-market consumer app.

RedCoin also fits into HSBC’s wider digital asset programme in Hong Kong:

  • HSBC Orion: a platform that has supported more than $8.3 billion in digitally native bond issuance globally since 2023.
  • HSBC Gold Token: has recorded 390,000 trades worth about $2.5 billion since its 2024 debut.
  • HKMA projects: the bank has also taken part in HKMA initiatives such as Project Ensemble.

Maggie Ng, HSBC’s Chief Executive for Hong Kong, said money, assets and information are moving onto always-on, programmable digital networks. She added that HSBC wants to help customers make that shift with practical products backed by a global bank.

Outlook

RedCoin gives Hong Kong a real-world test of whether a bank-issued, licensed stablecoin can become an everyday payment tool rather than a niche institutional product. Distribution through PayMe’s 3.3 million users and 100,000 merchants gives HSBC a head start no crypto-native issuer can easily match.

The open question is adoption. HSBC has not shared activation or transaction numbers, and convenience matters more than novelty when customers already have instant payment options. The next signals to watch are wallet activations, the first independent reserve attestation, the banking-app launch with HK$100 tokenised funds, and whether Anchorpoint follows HSBC into the retail market.
