Anthropic has filed for an initial public offering that could become the largest in history, potentially challenging the $86 billion raised by SpaceX earlier this year. The maker of the Claude AI assistant is seeking public-market capital amid explosive revenue growth, heavy losses and mounting scrutiny of advanced artificial intelligence. Its proposed Nasdaq ticker is ANT, although the company has not announced the number of shares, offering price or final valuation.
Key Overview
- Anthropic submitted its Form S-1 registration on October 26, 2026, with a possible market debut in November.
- First-half 2026 revenue reached $16.29 billion, roughly 14 times the comparable 2025 figure.
- Anthropic reported an $80.75 billion net loss, including a substantial one-time financing-related accounting charge.
- Reports suggest the IPO could raise up to $100 billion, but no deal size or valuation is final.
- The filing describes risks involving AI misuse, catastrophic failures, governance and competition.
A Potentially Record-Breaking Wall Street Debut
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives, Anthropic is positioning itself for a public listing as AI developers compete for computing infrastructure, researchers and corporate customers. A successful IPO could help fund data centres, technology investments and possible acquisitions.
The proposed offering comes after private investors reportedly valued Anthropic at $965 billion earlier in 2026. Market estimates now suggest a potential valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion, although these remain projections rather than terms established by the company.
An offering approaching $100 billion would surpass the reported $86 billion SpaceX debut in June. It would also put Anthropic ahead of rival OpenAI in reaching public markets, subject to regulatory approval and market conditions.

Revenue Surges, but Losses Remain Enormous
Anthropic’s financial disclosures show revenue of approximately $16.29 billion in the six months to June 2026, compared with $1.16 billion a year earlier. That growth illustrates accelerating adoption of commercial AI models, but it has not translated into profitability.
The company recorded a net loss of about $80.75 billion for the period, compared with $12.97 billion in the first half of 2025. Importantly, the 2026 figure includes a one-time accounting adjustment linked to financing arrangements, so it should not be interpreted entirely as ongoing operating expenditure.
The commercial challenge remains substantial: training, running and upgrading advanced models require expensive chips, electricity and infrastructure. Investors must assess whether future sales growth and margins can justify the enormous capital needs of the business.
Founders Retain Control as Safety Risks Take Centre Stage
The IPO also features an unusual governance arrangement. Anthropic’s seven co-founders would collectively retain 50.1% of shareholder voting power through a special share class, while its Long-Term Benefit Trust is designed to influence board oversight in the interests of responsible AI development.
The risk disclosures go well beyond conventional corporate warnings. They address potential use of AI for cyberattacks, chemical or biological threats, authoritarian surveillance and systems behaving in unintended ways. These are identified risks, not claims that such catastrophic outcomes are inevitable.
CEO Dario Amodei has also advocated stronger safeguards and international coordination as AI capabilities advance. The tension is clear: Anthropic is seeking substantial funding to expand the same technology whose risks it says require careful control.
Pentagon Dispute Adds Regulatory Uncertainty
Another complication is Anthropic’s dispute with the US government over military applications of AI. The company challenged government restrictions after resisting demands for unrestricted military use of its technology. Separate legal proceedings have produced differing rulings and ongoing appeals, adding to the uncertainty facing prospective investors.
Alongside competition from OpenAI, Google and other developers, these regulatory questions could influence the company’s future contracts and costs. The planned stock-market listing is therefore more than a fundraising event: it will test investor willingness to finance rapid AI expansion while accepting unusually large financial, governance and technological risks.
