Spiro and Yadea Partner to Expand Electric Mobility in Africa

African electric vehicle (EV) platform Spiro has partnered with Chinese electric two-wheeler manufacturer Yadea to accelerate the expansion of affordable and sustainable electric transport across Africa.

The partnership combines Yadea’s manufacturing, technology and research and development capabilities with Spiro’s electric mobility ecosystem, battery-swapping infrastructure and operating experience across seven African markets.

Together, the companies aim to develop a scalable and commercially sustainable electric mobility framework serving commercial fleet operators, delivery services, logistics providers and daily commuters across some of Africa’s fastest-growing mobility markets.

The partnership comes as countries across the continent seek to reduce dependence on imported fuel, strengthen energy and industrial sovereignty and modernise urban transport systems.

Partnership to Deliver Customised Electric Two-Wheelers

Under the agreement, Yadea will supply electric two-wheelers and related EV products tailored to Spiro’s expanding regional markets. Spiro will integrate the vehicles into its proprietary battery-swapping and energy infrastructure.

The companies will also co-develop customised two-wheeler platforms engineered specifically for local road conditions and commercial use across Africa.

According to the companies, the partnership deepens the China-Africa connection by combining Yadea’s manufacturing scale with Spiro’s battery-swapping network and understanding of African market dynamics.

Gagan Gupta, founder of Spiro and chairman of Equitane, said the partnership was a major endorsement of the company’s execution to date.

“Our strategic partnership with Yadea is a major endorsement of our execution to date and opens fantastic opportunities to jointly pioneer the next era of electric mobility in emerging markets.”

Spiro CEO Anant Badjatya said the partnership would help the company respond to accelerating demand for electric mobility.

“Africa’s shift to electric mobility is accelerating and this partnership helps us meet that demand at scale.”

Badjatya added that combining Yadea’s manufacturing strength with Spiro’s electric mobility ecosystem and operating experience would help accelerate the transition to clean transport.

Spiro Expands Battery-Swapping Network

Spiro has built its electric mobility platform around electric motorcycles and an extensive battery-swapping network.

The system enables riders to exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones in minutes, addressing the time required for conventional charging.

This model is particularly relevant to commercial motorcycle riders, delivery services and logistics businesses, where time spent charging can affect daily operations and earnings.

Spiro said in August that it had deployed more than 120,000 electric motorcycles, completed more than 31 million battery swaps and enabled more than 1.3 billion kilometres of zero-emission travel.

More recent figures provided by the company show that Spiro operates more than 130,000 electric motorcycles and more than 2,500 battery-swapping stations across seven countries. The company has recorded more than 50 million battery swaps and more than two billion kilometres of low-carbon travel.

Spiro also operates assembly facilities in Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria and Rwanda.

Yadea Brings Global EV Manufacturing Scale

Yadea, founded in China in 2001, brings its electric two-wheeler manufacturing and technology capabilities to the partnership.

The company says it has sold more than 100 million electric two-wheelers across more than 100 countries and has a retail network exceeding 40,000 stores.

Yadea also says it has more than 2,000 patents in electric vehicle technology and has ranked first globally in electric two-wheeler sales for nine consecutive years.

Wang Jiazhong, senior vice-president of Yadea Technology Group, described Africa as a major frontier for zero-emission transport.

“Africa represents a massive frontier for zero-emission transport.”

He said the partnership would combine global innovation with local infrastructure to deliver scalable and sustainable mobility solutions.

$270 Million Funding Supports Spiro’s Expansion

The partnership follows Spiro’s $270 million funding round in June 2026, which included a final $55 million investment from Chinese growth-stage investor NewTrails Capital.

The funding followed a $215 million equity round earlier that month backed by Impact Fund Denmark and Equitane.

Spiro said the capital would be used to expand its industrial footprint and develop next-generation battery-swapping networks.

The company’s partnership with Yadea provides another component of that expansion, combining additional manufacturing and product-development capabilities with Spiro’s existing regional infrastructure.

Africa’s Growing Electric Mobility Transition

The development comes amid rising fuel costs, demand for affordable transportation and growing policy support for clean-energy solutions across Africa.

The companies said the partnership aims to establish a commercially sustainable and technologically integrated electric mobility ecosystem capable of serving millions of riders, businesses, logistics providers and fleet operators.

For Spiro, the combination of electric motorcycles, battery swapping and local operating experience provides the foundation for its expansion across African markets. For Yadea, the partnership provides an opportunity to combine its global electric two-wheeler manufacturing capabilities with infrastructure designed around African mobility needs.

Outlook

Spiro’s partnership with Yadea brings together electric two-wheeler manufacturing, product development, battery swapping and African market experience. The companies plan to supply and co-develop vehicles suited to local road conditions and commercial applications while expanding access to electric mobility.

Spiro’s recent $270 million funding round and its growing motorcycle and battery-swapping network provide a foundation for further expansion, while Yadea contributes its global manufacturing and technology capabilities.

The partnership could support the companies’ stated objective of delivering scalable and sustainable electric transport solutions for riders, businesses, logistics providers and fleet operators across Africa.
