In a significant move towards regional collaboration, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary of Kenya, Musalia Mudavadi, held talks with Tanzanian Foreign Affairs Minister Dr January Makamba on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Member States Summit.

Mudavadi reaffirmed Kenya’s dedication to fostering integration within the East African Community (EAC), emphasizing the collective vision for a prosperous, competitive, secure, stable, and politically united East Africa.

Highlighting the robust historical ties, Mudavadi acknowledged the nations’ economic and cultural collaboration, extending Kenya’s positive trajectory in global foreign relations.

The diplomatic discussions followed the swift resolution of the recent aviation restrictions dispute between Kenya and Tanzania. The resolution, facilitated by Mudavadi and Makamba with support from their respective Transport Ministries, showcased effective conflict resolution mechanisms.

Addressing collaboration, Mudavadi emphasized the interconnectedness between Kenya and Tanzania, likening the relationship to conjoined twins. He stressed the shared responsibility in addressing regional challenges.

Beyond bilateral matters, the ministers pledged support to restore peace in the conflict-ridden Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Additionally, they committed to seeking interventions for peace in the Horn of Africa, particularly addressing the Somalia conflict arising from the territorial stand-off with Somaliland.

The East African Community, comprising eight Partner States, including Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania, remains focused on economic, political, social, and cultural integration. The EAC’s mission is to enhance the quality of life through increased competitiveness, value-added production, trade, and investments.

As Kenya and Tanzania strengthen diplomatic ties, the region anticipates heightened unity and diplomatic efficacy within the EAC.
