Interactive Brokers has expanded its Korean equities offering by adding access to select stocks through Nextrade, South Korea’s first Alternative Trading System. The move builds on the broker’s earlier KRX launch and gives eligible global clients an additional route into Korean shares, longer trading hours and automated order routing across two venues.
Key Overview
- Interactive Brokers now offers select Korean equities through Nextrade alongside the Korea Exchange.
- Nextrade provides a 12-hour trading window, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM KST.
- IB SmartRouting is designed to route orders between KRX and Nextrade to the venue offering the best available price.
- Access is not available to residents of Korea and remains subject to each Interactive Brokers affiliate and client country of residence.
Nextrade Deepens Global Access to Korean Stocks
Interactive Brokers has launched access to select Korean equities through Nextrade, expanding the choices available to eligible international investors seeking exposure to one of Asia’s most closely watched stock markets. The broker said the new access covers approximately 650 securities from the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets, adding a second trading venue alongside the Korea Exchange.
The launch matters because Korean equities have become increasingly relevant to global portfolios. The market includes major technology, automotive and semiconductor companies such as Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Hyundai Motor. For investors already using Interactive Brokers to trade across global markets, the addition of Nextrade creates a more flexible route into Korean shares without needing to manage a separate local brokerage relationship.
Interactive Brokers said the expansion follows its earlier move to offer Korean stocks through KRX, which the company described as a first among major US-based brokers giving global investors direct Korean equity access. The earlier KRX rollout gave eligible clients access to more than 2,700 listed securities, plus multi-currency support and API access for algorithmic strategies.

Longer Hours and Smart Routing Add Flexibility
The biggest practical change is trading time. Nextrade operates across pre-market, standard and after-market sessions, extending Korean equity trading to a 12-hour window from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM KST. South Korea’s Financial Services Commission had said Nextrade’s launch would extend daily stock trading hours, introduce more competition, add order types and support potential transaction-cost benefits.
Interactive Brokers has also enabled IB SmartRouting across KRX and Nextrade. That means orders can be automatically routed to the venue offering the best price available at the time, helping clients manage execution quality when the same stock is available on more than one venue.
For global investors, the extended session can be useful when reacting to developments outside normal Korean exchange hours, especially for those trading across US, European and Asian time zones. It also gives investors more room to coordinate Korean equity positions with broader portfolios that may include stocks, options, futures, currencies, bonds and funds across Interactive Brokers’ wider global platform.
Korea’s Market Structure Continues to Open Up
Nextrade represents a structural shift in South Korea’s equity market. The platform describes itself as Korea’s first alternative trading system and the second stock trading venue alongside KRX, established under the Financial Investment Services and Capital Markets Act. According to its market overview, the ATS breaks with the country’s long single-venue structure and adds competition to the market.
For Interactive Brokers, the Nextrade integration strengthens its Asia access proposition at a time when investors are paying closer attention to Korean semiconductors, electric vehicles, batteries and advanced manufacturing. For clients, the key benefits are not just market entry, but improved execution choice, longer hours and the ability to trade Korean stocks within the same account used for other global assets.
The limitation is availability. Interactive Brokers said Nextrade access is not open to Korean residents, and product availability will vary depending on the client’s country of residence and the relevant Interactive Brokers affiliate.
