Edison Completes Wind Farm Repowering Across Abruzzo

Share
Edison completes the repowering of its wind farms across Italy's Abruzzo region, boosting renewable energy generation while reducing the number of turbines.
Share

Edison has completed the repowering of all nine of its wind farms in Italy’s Abruzzo region following an investment exceeding €200 million. The project increased installed capacity from 114 MW to 186 MW, more than doubled annual renewable electricity generation to 355 GWh, and reduced the number of wind turbines by 73%, demonstrating how modern wind technologies can boost clean energy production while reducing environmental and landscape impacts.

Key Overview

  • Edison invested more than €200 million to repower all its Abruzzo wind farms.
  • Installed wind capacity increased from 114 MW to 186 MW.
  • Annual renewable electricity generation rose to 355 GWh.
  • The number of wind turbines was reduced by 73%.
  • The project supports Italy’s renewable energy and decarbonisation goals.

Repowering Boosts Renewable Energy Production

Edison has completed the repowering of its entire wind power portfolio in Italy’s Abruzzo region, marking a major milestone in the company’s renewable energy strategy and Italy’s broader energy transition.

The project involved modernising all of Edison’s existing wind farms in the region through an investment exceeding €200 million, increasing renewable energy production while significantly reducing the number of wind turbines across the landscape.

Following the completion of the project, Abruzzo has become the first Italian region where Edison has fully repowered its entire wind portfolio, creating a model for future renewable energy development across the country.

Installed Capacity Increases to 186 MW

The repowering programme was carried out in two phases between 2019 and 2021, and later between 2025 and 2026.

Through the project, Edison increased its installed wind generation capacity in Abruzzo from 114 megawatts (MW) to 186 MW.

The company replaced 173 older wind turbines with just 47 latest-generation turbines, reducing the number of turbines installed on mountain ridges by approximately 73%.

Despite the lower number of turbines, advances in turbine technology have significantly improved electricity generation capacity and operational efficiency.

Renewable Generation More Than Doubles

The upgraded wind farms now generate approximately 355 gigawatt-hours annually of renewable electricity each year.

This represents an increase of around 2.5 times compared with previous production levels.

According to Edison, the electricity generated is sufficient to meet the annual energy needs of over 131,000 households, almost equivalent to supplying the entire province of Pescara.

The additional renewable generation also helps prevent the emission of approximately 148,000 tonnes of CO₂ during the year.

Repowering Supports Italy’s Energy Transition

Edison Chief Executive Officer Nicola Monti described the completion of the programme as an important milestone in the company’s renewable energy expansion strategy.

He said the project strengthens Edison’s contribution to building a more diversified, resilient, and decarbonised electricity system while demonstrating how technological innovation can support both environmental sustainability and regional economic development.

Monti also highlighted Abruzzo as a strategically important region where Edison has built long-standing partnerships with local authorities, institutions, and communities.

According to the company, the project demonstrates how renewable energy development can be integrated with local economic growth while supporting Italy’s climate objectives.

Modern Technology Improves Efficiency

Edison Rinnovabili Chief Executive Officer Fabio Lamioni said the company was among the first in Italy to undertake comprehensive wind farm reconstruction projects.

He noted that the Abruzzo programme illustrates how modern wind technology allows renewable electricity generation to increase substantially while reducing the number of turbines and improving landscape integration.

The company intends to replicate this model at additional wind facilities across Italy, beginning with projects in the Campania region.

Repowering Could Unlock More Wind Capacity

According to Edison, the potential for wind farm repowering across Italy remains significant.

Existing wind farms identified for repowering account for nearly 6 GW of Italy’s approximately 13.5 GW of installed wind capacity.

The company estimates that modernising existing facilities could add more than 13 GW of additional renewable generation capacity.

This would provide between 60 – 70% of the new wind capacity needed to achieve Italy’s Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) target of 26 GW of installed wind capacity by 2030.

The figures highlight the important role that upgrading existing infrastructure could play in accelerating renewable energy deployment without requiring extensive new project sites.

Project Supports Local Communities

Beyond increasing renewable electricity production, the repowering programme also generated significant economic benefits for the local region.

During construction, over 400 workers were employed across the various project sites, helping strengthen local supply chains and supporting businesses involved in transportation, accommodation, food services, maintenance, and engineering.

The company also carried out environmental restoration work after removing older turbines.

Former turbine sites were restored using excavated soil and converted into grazing land for livestock, while other locations were adapted into picnic areas at the request of local authorities.

Edison also supported the restoration of the historic Sentiero del Vento mountain trail, transforming it into a route accessible to hikers and mountain bikers.

Abruzzo Becomes Edison’s Leading Wind Region

Following completion of the project, Edison now operates 9 wind farms across Abruzzo with a combined installed capacity of 186 MW.

According to the company, these facilities account for approximately 61 per cent of the region’s total wind power generation, making Edison the largest wind energy operator in Abruzzo.

The project demonstrates how repowering existing renewable energy assets can simultaneously increase electricity production, reduce environmental impacts, improve land use efficiency, and contribute to national decarbonisation goals.

Outlook

Edison’s completion of the Abruzzo repowering programme highlights the growing importance of modernising existing renewable energy infrastructure as countries accelerate their clean energy transition. By increasing installed capacity, significantly boosting renewable electricity generation, and reducing the number of wind turbines through advanced technology, the project provides a practical model for future wind farm upgrades across Italy. As the country works toward its PNIEC target of 26 GW of installed wind capacity by 2030, repowering existing wind farms is expected to play an increasingly important role in expanding renewable energy generation while supporting regional economic development, improving environmental outcomes, and strengthening Italy’s long-term energy security.
