AU Small Finance Bank NRI Deposit Rates Rise to 7.60%

FCNR versus NRE deposits is the core investor decision. FCNR(B) deposits are maintained in eligible foreign currencies, reducing direct exposure to Indian-rupee depreciation. NRE fixed deposits are maintained in rupees, so the higher 7.60% headline return can still be reduced in foreign-currency terms if the rupee weakens. AU Bank’s higher rates may appeal to non-resident savers, but investors should compare yield, currency risk, tax treatment, tenor, repatriation rules and bank credit quality.

Key Overview

  • FCNR(B) rate: 7.40%.
  • Previous FCNR(B) rate: 7.10%.
  • FCNR(B) increase: 30 basis points.
  • NRE fixed-deposit rate: 7.60%.
  • Previous NRE rate: 7.00%.
  • NRE increase: 60 basis points.
  • AU Bank fixed-deposit programme rating: CRISIL AA+/Stable.
  • AU Bank deposit base at 31 December 2025: ₹138,415 crore.
  • CASA ratio at 31 December 2025: 28.9%.

AU Small Finance Bank NRI Deposit Rates Rise to 7.60%

A Higher Rate, But Not the Same Risk

The 7.60% NRE fixed-deposit rate is higher than the 7.40% FCNR(B) rate, but the products are not interchangeable. The NRE deposit is rupee-denominated. A non-resident investor who ultimately spends or reports wealth in dollars, pounds, dirhams or another foreign currency must consider exchange-rate movement.

The FCNR(B) product gives a slightly lower headline rate but reduces the depositor’s direct rupee depreciation risk. That is why the stronger question is not simply “which rate is higher?” It is whether the extra 20 basis points on the NRE deposit adequately compensates for currency exposure.

Smaller Banks Are Competing Harder

The Economic Times reported that small and medium-sized banks are raising FCNR(B) rates to attract non-resident deposits after interest-rate deregulation. It said AU Bank raised FCNR(B) rates by 30 basis points to 7.4%, while other smaller banks were also offering rates above 7.4%–7.5%. (The Economic Times)

This suggests that deposit competition is not only about customer acquisition. It is also about funding strategy. For smaller and mid-sized banks, NRI deposits can help diversify funding and reduce reliance on more expensive or less stable funding channels.

Credit Quality Still Matters

CRISIL reaffirmed an AA+/Stable rating on ₹40,000 crore of AU Bank fixed deposits in April 2026. Its rationale also showed a deposit base of ₹138,415 crore as of 31 December 2025. (CRISIL)

But the rating is not a guarantee against loss. CRISIL also flagged that AU Bank’s CASA ratio remained low compared with larger private banks, falling to 28.9% at December 2025, and noted that bulk deposits are more rate-sensitive and less sticky than granular retail deposits. (CRISIL)

What NRI Savers Should Compare

Non-resident investors should compare the applicable tenor, currency, tax treatment, repatriation rules, premature-withdrawal penalties and whether the quoted rate still applies at the point of booking. Deposit rates can change quickly, and the quoted rates apply only to specified tenors and eligible deposit categories.

The headline conclusion is simple: 7.60% is not automatically better than 7.40%. The correct choice depends on the saver’s home currency, time horizon and tolerance for rupee risk.

Conclusion

AU Small Finance Bank’s NRI deposit-rate increase highlights intensifying competition for non-resident savings. The higher NRE rate may look attractive, but it comes with rupee exposure. The slightly lower FCNR(B) rate may suit savers who prioritise foreign-currency stability.

For investors, the rate is only the beginning. Product structure, currency, credit quality and tax treatment determine the real outcome.

FAQs

1. What did AU Small Finance Bank change?

AU Small Finance Bank raised select FCNR(B) deposit rates to 7.40% and NRE fixed deposit rates to 7.60%, effective 27 July 2026. (AU Small Finance Bank)

2. What is the main difference between FCNR(B) and NRE deposits?

FCNR(B) deposits are maintained in eligible foreign currencies, while NRE deposits are rupee-denominated. That means NRE deposits expose non-resident savers to rupee currency movement.

3. Is the 7.60% NRE rate better than the 7.40% FCNR(B) rate?

Not automatically. The NRE rate is higher in nominal terms, but foreign-currency returns can be reduced if the rupee weakens during the deposit period.

4. What does CRISIL’s AA+/Stable rating mean?

It indicates CRISIL’s view of the bank’s fixed-deposit programme credit quality, but it is not a guarantee of repayment or protection against all risk. (CRISIL)

5. Why are smaller Indian banks raising NRI deposit rates?

Smaller and mid-sized banks are using higher FCNR(B) rates to attract non-resident deposits, especially where they cannot easily offer the same leverage-linked structures as larger banks. (The Economic Times)
