Advanced Micro Devices has crossed the $1 trillion market-capitalisation threshold for the first time, marking a historic milestone for the semiconductor company as investors increasingly price in its expanding role in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
AMD shares surged nearly 10% on September 21, extending a five-session rally that lifted the stock by roughly 25%. The rally comes as the company’s data center business records rapid growth, supported by demand for EPYC processors, Instinct AI accelerators and large-scale AI computing systems.
The milestone places AMD among a small group of semiconductor companies to have achieved a trillion-dollar valuation, although it remains substantially smaller than Nvidia, the industry’s dominant AI-chip company.
Key Overview
- AMD surpassed a $1 trillion market capitalisation for the first time on September 21, 2026.
- Shares gained 9.95% during the session, extending a five-day rally of nearly 25%.
- AMD closed at $615.52, after reaching a record intraday high of $616.69.
- Q2 2026 revenue reached $11.54 billion, increasing 50% year-on-year.
- Data Center revenue climbed 107% to $6.7 billion and represented 58% of company revenue.
- AMD expects Data Center revenue to more than double year-on-year in 2027.
- Nvidia remained considerably larger, with a market value of approximately $5.4 trillion around the time AMD crossed the milestone.
AMD Enters the $1 Trillion Market-Cap Club
AMD crossed the $1 trillion valuation threshold (Investing.com) during trading on September 21, making the milestone one of the clearest signs yet of how dramatically investor expectations for the company have changed alongside the AI boom.
By the end of the session, AMD had closed at $615.52 after touching $616.69 (Yahoo Finance) during intraday trading, representing a 9.95% one-day increase. The five trading sessions from September 15 through September 21 lifted AMD from $504.20 to $615.52, a gain of roughly 22% based on closing prices.
The longer-term rally has been even more dramatic. AMD shares were up more than 180% for 2026 around the time the company crossed the trillion-dollar threshold, as investors increasingly viewed it as one of the largest potential beneficiaries of continuing investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Despite reaching the milestone, AMD remained well behind Nvidia. Around the same period, the AI-chip market leader carried a valuation of approximately $5.4 trillion, meaning its market value was more than five times AMD’s newly achieved trillion-dollar benchmark.

Data Center Growth Is Transforming AMD
The biggest financial driver behind AMD’s changing valuation has been its data center operation.
During the second quarter of 2026, AMD reported record quarterly revenue of $11.536 billion (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.), representing growth of 50% from $7.685 billion a year earlier.
Data Center revenue reached $6.718 billion, an increase of 107% year-on-year. That meant the division accounted for approximately 58% of AMD’s total quarterly revenue, compared with a business historically more heavily associated with personal-computer processors and gaming hardware.
Demand for AMD’s EPYC server processors and Instinct AI accelerators has been central to that expansion. AMD is also increasingly selling complete AI infrastructure rather than relying exclusively on individual processors, combining CPUs, GPUs, networking technology and software into larger data center systems.
Its Helios rack-scale architecture forms a major part of that strategy, with the company working with large cloud and AI customers as it attempts to compete across a broader portion of the AI computing stack.
AMD Is Betting on Another Major AI Expansion
Management expects the data center business to become even more important.
Following its second-quarter results, AMD said it expects Data Center revenue to more than double in 2027 (Reuters) compared with 2026, reflecting expectations for continued growth in both AI accelerators and server CPUs.
The company has also projected approximately $13 billion in third-quarter revenue (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.), plus or minus $300 million, which would represent roughly 41% year-on-year growth at the midpoint.
That outlook demonstrates why the market is placing increasingly large valuations on companies supplying the infrastructure behind generative and agentic AI systems.
The Nvidia Gap Still Defines the Competitive Landscape
AMD’s trillion-dollar milestone does not mean the competitive gap with Nvidia has disappeared.
Nvidia continues to dominate large portions of the AI accelerator market and has built an extensive ecosystem around its GPUs, networking products, systems and software. AMD’s opportunity therefore depends not simply on overall AI spending continuing to increase, but also on its ability to capture a larger share of that spending.
For investors, AMD’s $1 trillion valuation reflects substantially higher expectations for future earnings and AI infrastructure revenue. Maintaining that valuation will increasingly depend on whether rapid Data Center growth, major customer deployments and the expansion of its Instinct and Helios platforms translate into sustained revenue and profitability.
What has already changed is AMD’s position within the semiconductor industry. Once primarily viewed as a challenger in PCs and traditional server processors, the company is increasingly being valued as one of the central suppliers competing for the next generation of global AI infrastructure spending.
