Nairobi Securities Exchange investor base grows by 333,000 as Kenyan stocks rally, highlighting rising investor participation, stock market performance, and confidence in Kenya's capital markets

The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) added 333,043 registered investors in the nine months to September 2026, lifting its investor base to approximately 2.36 million. New listings and rising stock prices accompanied the increase, while the exchange’s market capitalisation climbed above KES 4 trillion. However, investor registration figures do not establish how many newcomers actively traded shares.

Key Overview

  • Registered investors increased by 333,043 from approximately 2.027 million at the start of 2026, a rise of about 16.4%.
  • The nine-month increase was more than three times the 98,063 investors added during the corresponding period of 2025.
  • Market capitalisation rose to KES 4.12 trillion at the end of September, up from KES 2.94 trillion in December 2025.
  • The NSE All Share Index gained 9.57% in the third quarter, while the NSE 20 Share Index advanced 14.95%.
  • Equity turnover fell 72.44% quarter on quarter, partly reflecting an exceptional Safaricom transaction in June.
  • Quickmart’s KES 15 billion share offer is scheduled to close on October 30, ahead of a planned November listing.

New Listings Help Revive Investor Interest

The exchange’s growth in registered investors surpassed the 174,400 added throughout 2025 and nearly matched the increase accumulated over the four years to December 2025.

Men represented approximately 67.5% of registered equity investors at the end of September, at around 1.593 million, compared with 767,472 women. The statistics indicate a substantial gender participation gap, even as the overall investor base expands.

The renewed interest coincided with several high-profile admissions. Kenya Pipeline Company joined the exchange in March after the government offered a 65% ownership stake comprising about 11.81 billion shares at KES 9 each, representing roughly KES 106.3 billion in offer value.

Family Bank followed on June 23 through a listing by introduction of approximately 1.66 billion shares at a reference price of KES 18. Unlike an IPO issuing new shares, this admission did not raise fresh capital for the bank. Property vehicles also broadened investment choices through real estate investment trust listings.

The available statistics do not show how many of the additional registered investors entered specifically because of these listings.

NSE Valuation Exceeds KES 4 Trillion

Kenyan equities continued recovering in the third quarter. According to the third-quarter market statistics, total NSE market capitalisation reached KES 4.12 trillion by September, compared with KES 2.94 trillion at the end of 2025.

The KES 1.18 trillion increase reflects both gains in existing share prices and the addition of newly listed companies. It should therefore not be interpreted entirely as investment returns on stocks already trading at the start of the year.

During July–September, the NSE All Share Index rose 9.57% to 245.60 points, while the NSE 20 Share Index gained 14.95% to 4,316.96 points.

Safaricom Deal Distorts Trading Comparison

Equity turnover declined from KES 263.87 billion in the second quarter to KES 72.72 billion in the third, a reported drop of 72.44%. Yet second-quarter turnover included an approximately KES 204.3 billion Safaricom block transaction associated with the state’s sale of a 15% stake to Vodacom.

LIVENSE market summarySee NSE data →

Removing that exceptional transaction for comparison purposes leaves roughly KES 59.57 billion in second-quarter turnover, below the third quarter’s KES 72.72 billion. This is an illustrative adjustment, not an official measure of underlying market liquidity.

The deal also faces legal uncertainty. A September 15 High Court judgment invalidated the sale, and the appeal proceedings remain unresolved. The transaction’s treatment in historical trading data is separate from the legal dispute over ownership.

Quickmart IPO Provides Next Market Test

Attention now turns to supermarket operator Quickmart’s KES 15 billion public offer, comprising two billion existing shares at KES 7.50 each. The offer is due to close on October 30, with NSE trading expected to begin on November 12, subject to the stated conditions.

The expansion of the investor base and the return of sizable listings suggest greater interest in Kenya’s stock market. The longer-term test will be whether newly registered investors become active participants and whether trading liquidity deepens beyond occasional large transactions.
