Quickmart PLC has increased the share of its KSh15 billion initial public offering (IPO) reserved for cornerstone investors from 13% to 48%, following the admission of three additional institutional investors. The revised allocation approved on October 23 gives four major investors access to an indicative 960 million shares worth KSh7.2 billion, significantly reducing the shares available to other investors.

The supermarket chain’s IPO closes on Friday, October 30, 2026, ahead of its planned Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) listing in November.

Key Overview

  • Cornerstone allocation: Increased from 13% to 48%, equivalent to 960 million shares valued at KSh7.2 billion.
  • Major investors: IFC, the UK’s MOBILIST programme, RWC Asset Management and US-based 337 Frontier Capital.
  • Revised investor allocations: Kenyan and East African retail investors 12%, Kenyan institutions 32%, other foreign investors 8%, and cornerstone investors 48%.
  • IPO price and size: Two billion existing shares priced at KSh7.50 each, representing 50% of Quickmart.
  • Important dates: Applications close October 30; trading is expected to begin November 12, subject to offer conditions.

Institutional Investors Expand Their Commitment

Quickmart’s supplementary offer disclosures identify four cornerstone investors whose combined indicative commitments account for nearly half of the shares on offer.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, through its MOBILIST programme, has subscribed approximately KSh1.94 billion, representing roughly 13% of the IPO. MOBILIST supports investment through public markets, particularly in emerging economies.

US-based 337 Frontier Capital has applied for approximately KSh1.94 billion worth of shares, while UK fund manager RWC Asset Management, operating under the Redwheel brand, has applied for approximately KSh1.30 billion, or 8.7% of the offering.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is the fourth cornerstone investor, with a proposed investment of up to US$15 million, equivalent to approximately KSh1.94 billion. However, its participation remains conditional on its board’s approval and other offer conditions.

If all four investments are completed as proposed, cornerstone investors would collectively own approximately 24% of Quickmart’s total issued shares after the offering.

Retail and Institutional Allocations Reduced

The expanded cornerstone allocation has substantially changed how IPO shares are distributed. Under the revised share allocation, Kenyan and East African retail investors collectively receive an indicative 12% of the IPO, while Kenyan institutional investors receive 32%. Other foreign investors are allocated 8%.

Previously, the offer reserved 20% for Kenyan retail investors, 12% for East African investors, 35% for Kenyan institutions, 20% for foreign investors and 13% for cornerstone investors.

Consequently, the combined share available to Kenyan and East African retail investors has fallen from 32% to 12%, while local institutional investors’ allocation has dropped from 35% to 32%.

These percentages are indicative rather than guaranteed. Final allocations may change depending on investor demand, the composition of applications and applicable regulatory requirements.

What the KSh15 Billion IPO Means for Quickmart

The transaction involves the sale of two billion existing shares by Sokoni Retail Kenya Limited, Quickmart’s current shareholder. At KSh7.50 per share, the offer values the entire supermarket chain at approximately KSh30 billion.

Importantly, Quickmart is not issuing new shares. The proceeds will therefore go to the selling shareholder rather than directly financing the company’s expansion.

The retailer operates 72 stores across 16 Kenyan counties and recorded approximately KSh50.4 billion in revenue in 2025. Its growth strategy focuses on new stores, increased sales at existing outlets, digital channels and operational efficiency.

A stronger institutional shareholder base could attract investor attention and support secondary-market trading interest. However, cornerstone commitments do not guarantee future share-price gains or dividend returns.

IPO Deadline and What Investors Should Watch

According to the published offer timetable, the IPO closes at 5:00 p.m. East Africa Time on October 30, 2026. Results and allocations are scheduled for November 6, with NSE trading expected to commence on November 12, subject to offer conditions and any formally approved changes.

The minimum application is 500 shares, costing KSh3,750, with further applications in multiples of 100 shares. Investors require a Central Depository System (CDS) account.

The revised allocations make final subscription figures especially important. Investors will be watching whether demand from retail buyers and other institutions is sufficient, how shares are allotted across categories, and whether IFC’s conditional participation receives final approval.
