Malaysia could attract a proposed US$50 billion (about RM204.3 billion) in artificial intelligence (AI), emerging technologies and data centres after SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son identified potential locations in the country, according to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The proposed investment discussed by Anwar would target Kuching in Sarawak and parts of Peninsular Malaysia. It could rank among Southeast Asia’s largest technology investments, but an implementation timetable, confirmed financing and final project commitments have not been disclosed.
Key Overview
- Investment under consideration: US$50 billion, equivalent to roughly RM204.3 billion at the exchange rate cited in the initial report.
- Proposed locations: Kuching in Sarawak and sites in Peninsular Malaysia.
- Priority sectors: AI infrastructure, data centres and emerging technologies.
- Existing partnership: SoftBank signed an October 8 framework agreement with Grab and PETROS to explore AI infrastructure development in Sarawak.
- Potential benefits: Skilled employment, local technology capabilities and new opportunities for Malaysian suppliers.
- Current status: A proposal described by Malaysia’s prime minister, not a confirmed US$50 billion disbursement.
Why Malaysia Is Attracting AI Infrastructure Investment
Anwar disclosed the plan during a speech in Melaka on October 24, following a video call with Son on October 20. The reported discussion centred on proposed facilities and technology projects in both East and Peninsular Malaysia.
Malaysia is already a growing destination for data centres, helped by its strategic location, regional connectivity and demand for computing capacity. The country recorded RM385.7 billion in data-centre-related investment from 2021 through the first half of 2026, based on figures attributed to its investment development authority.
AI data centres house the computing systems needed to train and operate advanced AI models. Building them can increase demand for electricity, construction, engineering, networking equipment and specialist technical services. However, the economic benefits depend on how much local employment and procurement individual projects generate.
SoftBank’s Sarawak Partnership Offers an Early Foundation
The proposed investment follows an existing initiative in Sarawak. On October 8, SoftBank, Grab and Sarawak’s state-owned energy company PETROS signed a framework agreement to examine the development of an AI and digital infrastructure platform.
The partners intend to explore opportunities in advanced computing, AI services, robotics, workforce development and energy infrastructure. PETROS is expected to contribute its knowledge of energy supply and supporting infrastructure, while SoftBank brings global AI expertise and Grab contributes regional technology capabilities.
Crucially, the agreement establishes a framework for exploration, rather than a final construction or financing commitment. Neither the announcement nor the newly reported US$50 billion proposal establishes that all planned projects have secured funding or regulatory approvals.

Job Creation and Local Technology Development
Anwar said the potential investment could open up better employment opportunities for young Malaysians, particularly graduates entering technology-related fields.
Such projects could create demand for data-centre technicians, electrical engineers, cybersecurity specialists, AI developers and construction professionals. Yet the number and quality of jobs will depend on project design, investment phases and the extent to which operators develop local talent.
The prime minister also emphasised strengthening skills in AI, digitalisation and semiconductors. Malaysia is seeking to move beyond lower-value technology activities into more sophisticated development, engineering and innovation work.
What Could Determine Whether the Investment Proceeds?
Several details remain unresolved, including the project timetable, ownership arrangements, capital commitments, power requirements and any government incentives. Reliable electricity, sufficient water resources where required, connectivity and environmental approvals will be important considerations for large data-centre developments.
The Sarawak framework announcement explicitly recognises uncertainties involving financing, permits, land, power availability and customer demand. This is why the US$50 billion figure should be treated as a proposed investment value rather than money already invested.
For Malaysia, the next meaningful milestones would be formal project announcements, signed definitive agreements, funding details and construction schedules. These would clarify how quickly the proposal might translate into infrastructure, economic activity and jobs.
