Airtel Money has formally announced plans to list on the London Stock Exchange in a transaction that could value the African mobile-money business at between $8 billion and $9 billion.

The proposed IPO will be a secondary offering of existing shares, meaning Airtel Money itself will not raise fresh capital. Existing shareholders are expected to sell part of their holdings, with market reports indicating the offering could raise about $800 million for those sellers.

The listing would give public-market investors direct exposure to one of Africa’s largest digital financial-services platforms while allowing Airtel Africa to retain a strategic stake in the business.

Key Overview

  • Airtel Money intends to list on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange.
  • The IPO could value the company at approximately $8 billion to $9 billion.
  • Existing shareholders could sell around $800 million worth of shares, while Airtel Money itself will raise no new capital.
  • Airtel Africa currently owns 77.85% of the mobile-money business and plans to remain a long-term strategic shareholder.
  • Airtel Money had approximately 53 million monthly active users as of June 30, 2026.
  • Its network included more than 2.3 million agents, 490,000 merchants and 43,000 exclusive retail touchpoints.
  • The company processed $213 billion in transaction value during the 12 months to June 2026.
  • Final pricing is expected in mid-October 2026, after an indicative price and offer-size range is released.

IPO Will Sell Existing Shares Rather Than Raise New Cash

Airtel Money’s intention-to-float announcement confirms that the IPO will consist entirely of shares sold by existing shareholders.

That distinction is important because reports that the IPO could “raise $800 million” do not mean Airtel Money will receive $800 million of fresh funding. Instead, the estimated proceeds would go to shareholders selling part of their existing stakes.

Airtel Africa currently holds 77.85% of Airtel Money. Minority investors include TPG, Mastercard, Qatar Investment Authority and Chimetech Holding, which collectively invested $550 million in 2021.

The parent company says it expects to remain a long-term strategic shareholder after the listing. Airtel Money also expects a free float of at least 10% immediately after admission.

The offer will include institutional investors as well as a UK retail investor allocation through participating investment platforms, brokers and wealth managers.

IFC Commits Up to $90 Million as Cornerstone Investor

Airtel Money has also secured the International Finance Corporation as a cornerstone investor in the proposed offering.

Under the agreement, the IFC could purchase up to £67.2 million, or roughly $90 million, of existing shares at the final IPO price, subject to customary conditions.

An indicative price range and the number of shares to be offered are expected in early October, while the final offer price is targeted for mid-October.

Reports citing people familiar with the transaction indicate Airtel Money is targeting a market capitalisation of $8 billion to $9 billion, with an offering of about $800 million. Those figures remain subject to the book-building process and final pricing.

53 Million Users Support the Fintech Growth Story

Airtel Money operates across 13 African markets and had approximately 53 million monthly active users at the end of June 2026.

Its physical distribution network includes more than 2.3 million agents, over 490,000 merchants, more than 3,700 enterprises and over 43,000 exclusive retail touchpoints.

The platform provides services including cash deposits and withdrawals, peer-to-peer transfers, international transfers, bill payments, merchant payments and salary disbursements. In selected markets, customers can also access micro-loans, savings products, insurance, wealth products and virtual cards.

The business processed approximately $213 billion in total transaction value during the 12 months to June 30, 2026, after transaction value grew at a 33% compound annual rate in US-dollar terms from the financial year ended March 2018.

Revenue reached $1.346 billion in the year ended March 2026, with an EBITDA margin of about 50%. Airtel Money also reported no external borrowings, while capital expenditure represented roughly 3% of revenue.

These figures form a central part of the investment case presented to prospective shareholders, highlighting scale, profitability and cash generation alongside continued room for mobile-money adoption across its markets.

London Wins the Listing

Airtel Money evaluated several possible listing venues, including exchanges in the Middle East, before choosing London.

Chief executive Ian Ferrao said the company sees London as offering deep pools of capital and strong institutional understanding of African and emerging-market businesses. Airtel Africa has itself been listed in London since 2019.

The transaction could also become an important test for London’s IPO market. A deal of about $800 million would rank among the city’s largest new listings in recent years, following a prolonged period of subdued IPO activity.

The company had initially targeted a listing during the first half of 2026 but later moved the process into the second half amid difficult market conditions. Its formal September filing and IPO timetable now set the stage for final pricing and allocation decisions in October.

If completed, the IPO would separately value one of Airtel Africa’s fastest-growing businesses and give investors a clearer market price for its mobile-money operations, while the parent retains a strategic interest in the next phase of growth.
