The cryptocurrency market briefly climbed back above $3 trillion as Bitcoin and major altcoins extended a broad rally. Bitcoin traded around $86,000, while Ether, XRP, Solana, BNB and Dogecoin also posted gains. At the same time, rising open interest in perpetual futures and more than $920 million in liquidated bearish positions pointed to increasing leverage and speculative activity.

Key Overview

  • Total crypto market capitalization briefly surpassed $3 trillion.
  • Bitcoin traded around $86,000, up about 4.5% over 24 hours.
  • Ether gained 2.3% to $2,745, while XRP rose 5.7% to $1.53.
  • Solana advanced 3.6% to $117, while Dogecoin gained about 11%.
  • Open interest in perpetual futures reached nearly $160 billion.
  • More than $920 million in bearish positions were liquidated on Monday.
  • U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded about $1 billion in net inflows the previous day.

Crypto Market Briefly Reclaims $3 Trillion

The cryptocurrency market briefly climbed above the $3 trillion mark on Tuesday as Bitcoin and major altcoins extended a broad rally.

The total market capitalization later stood just below $3 trillion, but remained up about 4.3% over the previous day, according to CoinGecko data.

Bitcoin traded around $86,000, gaining approximately 4.5% over the previous 24 hours. Ether rose about 2.3% to $2,745, while XRP advanced 5.7% to $1.53.

Solana gained 3.6% to $117, BNB increased 1.6%, and Dogecoin was among the stronger large-cap performers, rising approximately 11%.

Bitcoin Rises as Major Altcoins Rally

Bitcoin had earlier surged almost 8% during the U.S. trading session, reaching $87,381, its highest level since January.

The cryptocurrency subsequently retreated to approximately $85,100 on Tuesday, highlighting the movement in prices following the rapid rally.

The broader market also continued to add value. According to CoinGecko data, the total cryptocurrency market had gained more than $740 billion since the U.S. Treasury announced last month that it would increase buybacks of long-dated bonds.

Crypto Leverage Approaches $160 Billion

Infographic showing crypto futures leverage nearing $160 billion, with rising open interest, active positions, and growing trader exposure across major cryptocurrencies.

The rally has occurred alongside a significant increase in leverage in the derivatives market.

Open interest in cryptocurrency perpetual futures has climbed to nearly $160 billion, the highest level since late October last year, according to Coinglass data.

Open interest represents the total value of futures contracts that remain open. An increase indicates that more traders are maintaining active positions and taking exposure to future price movements.

The increase in open interest means new leveraged positions are entering the market even as some bearish positions are being forced out.

More Than $920 Million in Bearish Positions Liquidated

More than $920 million in bearish positions were liquidated on Monday as cryptocurrency prices surged.

These positions were held by traders betting on falling prices. When the market moved higher, those positions were automatically closed after traders could no longer meet required margin levels.

The forced closing of short positions can generate additional buying pressure as traders purchase assets to close losing positions.

However, open interest continued to increase despite the liquidations.

Short Positions Replaced by New Trades

A typical short squeeze can reduce open interest because losing positions are closed. In the current rally, however, open interest has continued to rise.

This suggests that new leveraged trades are replacing positions that have been liquidated.

Rachael Lucas, an analyst at BTC Markets, said:

“A squeeze normally destroys open interest. This one didn’t, which means positions are being replaced immediately.”

Lucas said traders were chasing the price movement rather than reducing their exposure, adding that the next 5% move in either direction could happen faster than traders expect.

Bitcoin ETF Inflows Reach $1 Billion

U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded approximately $1 billion in net inflows the previous day.

The figure was described in the source as the largest daily inflow since October last year.

The inflows occurred alongside Bitcoin’s rapid price increase and the broader recovery in the cryptocurrency market.

Market Rally Comes With Higher Speculation

The combination of rising cryptocurrency prices, increasing futures open interest and large-scale short liquidations points to greater activity in leveraged positions.

While bearish positions have been forced out during the rally, the continued rise in open interest indicates that traders are opening new positions.

Bitcoin’s move from approximately $85,100 to $87,381 during the U.S. session before retreating again also illustrates the sharp price movements accompanying the broader market rally.

Outlook

The cryptocurrency market has briefly returned above the $3 trillion capitalization level as Bitcoin and major altcoins continue to gain.

At the same time, perpetual futures open interest has approached $160 billion, while more than $920 million in bearish positions were liquidated during the rally. The continued increase in open interest suggests that new leveraged positions are entering the market even as short positions are closed.

Bitcoin’s subsequent pullback from $87,381 to around $85,100 underscores the rapid price movements occurring alongside the increase in market leverage.
