In a significant move to bolster the coastal region’s fishing industry, the government has allocated Sh1.4 billion for the development of modern fish landing sites. Spearheaded by Salim Mvurya, the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, this initiative aims to uplift local fishing communities and ensure sustainable economic growth.

The funds will facilitate the construction of new fish landing sites in strategic locations such as Mokowe, Mtangawanda, and Kipini, among others. CS Mvurya emphasized the importance of elevating fishing from a leisure activity to a lucrative sector vital for food security and economic prosperity.

During the National Celebrations for World Ocean Day in Kwale County, CS Mvurya unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art Blue Economy Training Centre in Shimoni, Kwale County. With an investment of Sh838 million, this center will provide comprehensive training opportunities for individuals interested in various marine-related activities, including seaweed farming and crab cultivation.

Moreover, the government is set to acquire modern fishing vessels to empower local fishermen. A total of 150 boats, along with an additional 25 designated for deep-sea fishing, will enable fishermen to explore more lucrative fishing grounds, thus enhancing their income prospects.

In addition to infrastructure development, CS Mvurya highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the Kenya Marine Fisheries Socio-Economic Development (KEMFSED) project. This project has already disbursed significant funds to support the region’s blue economy.

As the nation strives for sustainable development, efforts to curb marine pollution and safeguard the marine ecosystem remain crucial. Through strategic investments and collaborative endeavors, Kenya’s coastal communities are poised to thrive in the burgeoning blue economy landscape, ensuring a brighter future for all.
