Kenya is embarking on a transformative journey into nuclear energy, with an allocation of Sh11 billion for the development of its first nuclear research reactor. Spearheaded by the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA), this initiative is poised to revolutionize various sectors, from research and education to healthcare and industry.
The strategic plan outlined by NuPEA spans the years 2023 to 2027, with funds to be sourced in two installments from the Treasury. The construction of the nuclear research reactor is a strategic move aimed at enhancing national research capabilities, producing vital radioisotopes for medical applications, and supporting industrial advancements through instrument calibration services.
This investment underscores Kenya’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and economic growth. NuPEA has already secured a suitable 65-acre site at Konza Technopolis for the reactor’s construction, marking significant progress in infrastructure development.
A recent review by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) lauded Kenya’s strides in establishing a robust national nuclear infrastructure, validating the country’s readiness for this pioneering endeavor.
Looking ahead, Kenya plans to commission its first research reactor between 2030 and 2034, with preparations set to commence in 2026. Additionally, plans for a 1,000-megawatt electrical (MWe) nuclear plant are underway, with potential sites identified in Kilifi or Kwale counties.
To support these initiatives, NuPEA has allocated Sh4.645 billion for crucial infrastructure needs, including land acquisition for the nuclear power project. NuPEA CEO Justus Wabuyabo emphasizes the potential for job creation, with thousands of jobs expected during construction and operation phases.
The transition to nuclear energy offers promising benefits, including reduced reliance on imported petroleum and the creation of a sustainable energy landscape for Kenya’s future.
As Kenya prepares to solicit international tenders for the construction of the nuclear power plant, it positions itself as a regional leader in clean and efficient energy solutions, paving the way for a brighter and more sustainable future.
