ZiiDi Trader opens Nairobi Securities Exchange investing to foreign passport holders as M-PESA expands access to Kenya's stock market
Share

ZiiDi Trader has expanded its registration requirements to accept foreign passports, Kenyan passports and Military IDs alongside Kenyan National IDs, widening access to stock investing through the M-PESA-based platform. The change could make it easier for eligible foreign nationals and other investors to access Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) stocks without relying on the conventional brokerage onboarding process. With more than 351,000 transactions worth KSh1.08 billion processed within its first four and a half months, the platform is emerging as an important channel for expanding retail participation in Kenya’s capital markets.

Key Overview

ZiiDi Trader now supports four identification documents for account registration: Kenyan National ID, Kenyan passport, Military ID and foreign passport. The platform operates through My OneApp and integrates with M-PESA, allowing investors to buy Kenyan stocks digitally. More than 511,000 registrations have previously been reported, although only about 84,000 accounts had actively purchased shares during the early launch period.

ZiiDi Trader Widens Account Registration

ZiiDi Trader has expanded the range of identification documents investors can use to register for its digital stock-investing service.

Users can now open an account using a Kenyan National ID, Kenyan passport, Military ID issued to Kenya Defence Forces personnel or a foreign passport.

The addition of foreign passports is particularly significant because it broadens the potential pool of users beyond investors relying on Kenyan national identification.

Eligible foreign nationals using the service in Kenya can therefore access a more streamlined digital onboarding route into the country’s equity market.

The development addresses one of the practical barriers that can discourage potential investors: the administrative process required to establish an investment account.

Foreign Passport Holders Gain Easier Investment Access

Allowing foreign passport holders to register represents an important expansion of investment access.

Traditional securities-account onboarding can involve documentation and processes that may be less convenient for people without Kenyan national identification.

ZiiDi Trader’s expanded requirements provide another route for eligible users to verify their identity and access the market digitally.

However, accepting a foreign passport should not be interpreted as meaning every overseas investor automatically qualifies. Investors still need to satisfy the platform’s applicable onboarding, regulatory and eligibility requirements.

The change nevertheless removes an identification barrier for qualifying foreign investors who want exposure to Kenyan listed companies.

M-PESA Brings Stock Investing to Mobile Users

A central feature of the platform is its connection with M-PESA, which brings securities investing closer to a payment system already widely used in Kenya.

Investors can access ZiiDi Trader through My OneApp, reducing reliance on physical paperwork and conventional brokerage channels.

The model is particularly relevant to smaller investors because users can begin investing with as little as the cost of a single share.

That lowers the practical financial threshold for participating in Kenyan stocks, even though investors still need to understand the risks associated with individual equities.

Rather than requiring investors to accumulate substantial capital before entering the market, fractional affordability at the level of individual share purchases allows users to build portfolios gradually.

ZiiDi Trader Processes KSh1.08 Billion in Transactions

SERRARI infographic highlighting early investor activity on ZiiDi Trader, which processed more than 351,000 transactions worth KSh1.08 billion within its first four and a half months. The average transaction value was slightly above KSh3,000, suggesting that trading activity has been driven substantially by smaller individual investments rather than predominantly large institutional orders. The infographic emphasizes that ZiiDi Trader’s early transaction volumes provide evidence of active participation by Kenya’s retail investors, showing that users are not simply opening accounts but are actually using the digital platform to purchase securities.

Early transaction figures provide evidence that investors are using the platform beyond simply opening accounts.

Within its first four and a half months, ZiiDi Trader processed more than 351,000 transactions valued at KSh1.08 billion.

The average transaction was slightly above KSh3,000.

That relatively modest average suggests activity has been driven substantially by smaller individual transactions rather than predominantly by large institutional orders.

For Kenya’s retail investors, this is an important distinction. A platform designed to broaden participation should ultimately be assessed not only by registrations but also by whether ordinary investors actually use it to buy securities.

Registrations Still Outpace Active Investors

ZiiDi Trader had previously recorded approximately 511,000 registrations, while around 84,000 accounts had actively bought shares during its earlier launch period.

The difference highlights a wider challenge facing Kenya’s capital markets.

Making account registration easier can expand the pool of potential investors, but it does not guarantee sustained participation.

Kenya already has approximately three million retail investor accounts, yet fewer than 200,000 reportedly trade regularly.

The figures suggest that the country’s challenge is increasingly shifting from simply creating investment accounts to encouraging people to become consistent, informed market participants.

Financial education, attractive listed opportunities, investor confidence and convenient trading infrastructure will therefore remain important alongside easier registration.

Kenya Pipeline IPO Demonstrates Mobile Investing Potential

The platform has also demonstrated how digital investing can influence participation during major public offerings.

During the Kenya Pipeline IPO, approximately 36,000 of the roughly 73,000 retail applications were submitted through ZiiDi Trader.

That means the platform accounted for close to half of reported retail applications.

The experience illustrates how simplified mobile access can become particularly valuable when a widely followed investment opportunity enters the market.

Instead of requiring investors to navigate unfamiliar brokerage processes, a mobile platform can place the investment application within a digital ecosystem they already understand.

NSE Targets Nine Million Retail Investors

The expansion comes as the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) seeks to substantially increase participation among individual investors.

The exchange has set an ambition of reaching nine million retail investors by 2029.

Achieving that target will require more than introducing new stocks, bonds, ETFs and other products. Access to those investments also needs to become easier.

NSE Chairman Tom Mulwa has emphasised the importance of reducing friction for younger and mobile-first investors accustomed to accessing financial services through smartphones.

ZiiDi Trader fits directly into that strategy by combining digital onboarding, mobile investing and familiar payment infrastructure.

Expanding Access Is Only the First Step

The decision to accept additional identification documents strengthens the accessibility of ZiiDi Trader, particularly for passport holders who may previously have encountered greater friction when trying to register.

Its early transaction figures also indicate meaningful demand for smaller-value stock purchases.

Yet the gap between registrations and active accounts shows that easier onboarding alone will not transform Kenya’s investor base.

The longer-term test will be whether new users continue investing after opening their accounts, diversify their portfolios and remain active through different market conditions.

If that transition occurs, platforms combining M-PESA, simplified registration and direct access to the NSE could play a significant role in broadening participation in Kenya’s capital markets.
