MTN Ghana has launched its 2026 Sustainability Month, expanding the initiative from a week-long observance into a month-long campaign focused on embedding environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles across its operations. Under the theme “Together for a Sustainable Future: Small Actions, Big Impact,” the programme aims to encourage employees and stakeholders to adopt sustainable practices while supporting the company’s Ambition 2030 strategy. The initiative also aligns with Ghana’s transition toward the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Sustainability Disclosure Standards (S1 and S2) ahead of mandatory sustainability reporting from January 1, 2027.

Key Overview

  • MTN Ghana has expanded its Sustainability Month from one week to a month-long programme.
  • The campaign is themed “Together for a Sustainable Future: Small Actions, Big Impact.”
  • MTN’s sustainability strategy is built around four pillars under Ambition 2030.
  • The company has rolled out biodegradable SIM cards to more than 4.7 million customers.
  • Project Zero has exceeded its 2025 carbon reduction target with 3.02 megawatts of installed solar capacity.
  • The initiative supports Ghana’s transition to the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Sustainability Disclosure Standards (S1 and S2).

MTN Ghana has launched its 2026 Sustainability Month, expanding the initiative from a week-long observance into a month-long campaign designed to strengthen environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices across the business while encouraging employees and stakeholders to contribute through everyday sustainable actions.

Launched under the theme “Together for a Sustainable Future: Small Actions, Big Impact,” the programme reflects the company’s commitment to embedding sustainability into its long-term business strategy while creating lasting value for customers, communities, investors and the environment.

Speaking at the launch, MTN Ghana Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett said sustainability has become central to the company’s long-term growth strategy and shared value creation.

Sustainability Anchored in Ambition 2030

Stephen Blewett said MTN Ghana’s sustainability agenda is built around four pillars—doing for the planet, doing for people, doing for growth and doing it right—which are aligned with the company’s Ambition 2030 strategy.

He said responsible business practices must extend beyond regulatory compliance to create meaningful long-term value while supporting the company’s environmental and social commitments.

“Sustainability is not a department. It is a discipline. Small actions, big impact,” he said.

Environmental Initiatives Deliver Measurable Progress

MTN Ghana’s sustainability initiatives include biodegradable SIM cards, solar power and network investment.

During the launch, Stephen Blewett highlighted several milestones achieved through the company’s sustainability programme.

These include the rollout of biodegradable SIM cards to more than 4.7 million customers, preventing an estimated 10,288 kilograms of plastic waste.

He also said Project Zero had exceeded its 2025 carbon reduction target, supported by 3.02 megawatts of installed solar capacity that now power more than half of MTN Ghana’s sites, offices and data centres.

Over the past five years, the company has also invested more than US$1 billion in network expansion while supporting small businesses through initiatives including its Mini-MBA programme with Absa Bank and Nova Business School.

The company continues promoting inclusion through the MTN Ghana Foundation and Yellow Care volunteer programme.

Month-Long Programme Promotes Everyday Sustainability

Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer Adwoa Wiafe said this year’s Sustainability Month represents the third major sustainability initiative undertaken by MTN Ghana.

She explained that expanding the programme from one week to one month provides greater opportunities for employees to participate in sustainability activities and integrate ESG principles into their daily work.

Activities planned throughout the month include lunch-and-learn sessions, recycling facility visits, tree-planting exercises and departmental sustainability engagements.

“What may seem like small actions today, switching off unused equipment, properly segregating waste or making responsible procurement decisions, will become measurable indicators of who we are as a company,” Adwoa Wiafe said.

Preparing for Mandatory Sustainability Reporting

Adwoa Wiafe said the initiative coincides with Ghana’s transition toward the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Sustainability Disclosure Standards (S1 and S2).

She explained that S1 requires companies to disclose sustainability-related risks and opportunities that could affect financial performance, while S2 focuses specifically on climate-related risks, opportunities and greenhouse gas emissions.

The expanded Sustainability Month is intended to help employees understand the importance of sustainability reporting while strengthening the company’s readiness for the new disclosure requirements.

ICAG Commends MTN Ghana’s ESG Leadership

Immediate Past President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), Sena Dake, praised MTN Ghana for placing sustainability at the centre of its business strategy.

She said sustainability has evolved beyond policy discussions to become an important driver of competitiveness, resilience and long-term value creation.

Sena Dake noted that global losses from disasters reached US$320 billion in 2024, reinforcing the importance of embedding sustainability into everyday business decisions.

She also disclosed that Ghana has adopted a roadmap for implementing the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Sustainability Disclosure Standards (S1 and S2).

According to Sena Dake, significant public-interest entities, including MTN Ghana, are expected to begin mandatory sustainability reporting from January 1, 2027, following the conclusion of the voluntary adoption period this year.

She encouraged employees to translate sustainability commitments into practical daily actions.

“The strategy documents alone will not reduce a single kilogramme of waste or save a single kilowatt of energy. The difference lies in the actions each of us chooses to take every day,” she said.

She added that lasting progress depends on consistent individual actions.

“A sustainable future will not be built by a few extraordinary people doing extraordinary things. It will be built by ordinary people choosing to do the right things consistently every single day.”

Outlook

The expansion of MTN Ghana’s Sustainability Month reflects the company’s growing emphasis on integrating ESG principles into its business strategy while preparing for Ghana’s transition to mandatory sustainability reporting. By combining environmental initiatives, employee engagement and practical sustainability education, the programme aims to strengthen responsible business practices across the organisation. As the implementation of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Sustainability Disclosure Standards (S1 and S2) approaches, initiatives that encourage measurable sustainability actions and stronger ESG awareness are expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting corporate resilience, transparency and long-term value creation.
