Iberdrola Advances Hybrid Renewable Project in Brazil

Share
Share

Iberdrola has completed the first phase of the Noronha Verde hybrid renewable energy project in Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha archipelago, advancing efforts to eliminate fossil fuel-based electricity generation on the island.

The project combines large-scale solar generation with battery storage technology and is expected to transform Fernando de Noronha into Latin America’s first inhabited oceanic island powered by a highly sustainable energy system.

Developed through Iberdrola’s Brazilian subsidiary Neoenergia, the initiative forms part of broader government-backed electrification and clean energy transition plans for the island.

Key Overview

  • Iberdrola completed the first phase of the Noronha Verde project
  • The project combines 22 MWp of solar capacity with 49 MWh of battery storage
  • Around 4,800 solar panels have already been installed
  • The project will eventually include more than 30,000 photovoltaic panels
  • The initiative aims to eliminate fossil fuel-based power generation on the island
  • The project is being developed by Neoenergia
  • Total investment is estimated at BRL 350 million
  • The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026

Iberdrola Advances Major Hybrid Energy Project in Brazil

Iberdrola has completed the first phase of its Noronha Verde hybrid renewable energy project in Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha archipelago, marking another important step toward eliminating fossil fuel-based electricity generation on the island.

The project combines utility-scale solar generation with advanced battery storage systems and is designed to transform Fernando de Noronha into Latin America’s first inhabited oceanic island powered by a highly sustainable and resilient energy system.

According to Iberdrola, the first phase involved the installation of approximately 4,800 photovoltaic panels, representing around 15% of the total planned solar infrastructure.

The newly installed panels are currently undergoing testing before electricity supplies begin flowing into the island’s power grid.

The company said the full project will eventually include more than 30,000 solar panels installed across the site in Pernambuco state.

Once fully operational, the hybrid renewable system is expected to generate enough electricity annually to meet the energy demand of around 9,000 homes while significantly reducing the island’s dependence on biodiesel-based generation

Hybrid System Combines Solar and Battery Storage

Noronha Verde is being developed through Neoenergia, Iberdrola’s Brazilian subsidiary, and combines renewable power generation with large-scale battery storage technology.

The completed project will deliver 22 MWp of installed solar capacity alongside 49 MWh of battery storage.

According to Iberdrola, the integration of battery storage is central to the project’s long-term objective of replacing fossil fuel generation with renewable electricity while maintaining grid stability and supply reliability.

Battery systems will allow the island to store solar energy generated during daylight hours and distribute electricity more efficiently during periods of lower generation or peak demand.

Analysts say hybrid renewable systems that combine solar generation with storage are becoming increasingly important as utilities and governments search for ways to improve renewable reliability while reducing dependence on conventional power sources.

The project also reflects growing momentum behind battery storage deployment globally as declining battery costs continue accelerating investment in hybrid renewable infrastructure.

Project Supports Brazil’s Energy Transition Goals

The Noronha Verde initiative forms part of broader governmental efforts to modernize energy infrastructure and accelerate decarbonization across the Fernando de Noronha archipelago.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with Brazil’s federal government and the Government of Pernambuco state under the Mais por Noronha programme, which promotes electrification and sustainable energy solutions across the island.

The initiative includes several additional energy transition measures beyond the solar and storage project itself.

These include the installation of solar systems in homes and accommodation, the deployment of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, distributed microgeneration systems, smart grid technologies, and the introduction of electric vehicles across the island.

Officials say the broader strategy aims to establish Fernando de Noronha as a model for sustainable island electrification and renewable energy self-sufficiency.

The project was officially unveiled last November by Ignacio Galán alongside Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira.

Fossil Fuel Dependence Set to Decline

A major objective of the Noronha Verde project is to eliminate the island’s dependence on fossil fuel-based electricity generation entirely.

Currently, Fernando de Noronha relies heavily on biodiesel generation to meet electricity demand, creating both environmental and logistical challenges associated with fuel transportation and energy security.

Iberdrola said the hybrid system is specifically designed to replace existing fossil fuel generation with renewable and clean energy technologies.

The inclusion of large-scale battery storage is viewed as critical to that transition because it allows renewable electricity to be managed more effectively without relying on conventional generation systems.

Analysts note that islands and remote communities are increasingly becoming ideal testing grounds for hybrid renewable systems because of high fuel transportation costs and the growing need for energy independence.

Hybrid renewable projects may also help improve long-term electricity reliability while reducing exposure to fossil fuel price volatility and supply disruptions.

The project’s location within an area recognized by UNESCO as a Natural World Heritage Site also adds significance to efforts supporting environmental responsibility and cleaner energy systems.

Hybrid Renewable Projects Gain Global Momentum

The Noronha Verde development also reflects a broader international shift toward hybrid renewable infrastructure systems that combine clean power generation with battery storage technologies.

Across global energy markets, developers are increasingly integrating renewable energy projects with storage systems as utilities attempt to strengthen grid flexibility, improve renewable utilization, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Hybrid renewable systems are often viewed as particularly attractive because they can help stabilize electricity supply during periods of fluctuating renewable generation while improving the efficiency of energy distribution networks.

The rapid growth of utility-scale battery storage is also being supported by declining battery costs, rising climate investment, and increasing pressure from governments and investors to accelerate decarbonization.

Analysts say projects such as Noronha Verde demonstrate how renewable energy systems are evolving beyond standalone solar or wind projects toward more integrated and resilient infrastructure models.

The combination of solar power and battery storage is increasingly being viewed as essential for enabling higher levels of renewable penetration without compromising grid reliability.

Outlook

Iberdrola’s Noronha Verde project represents another major step in the global transition toward hybrid renewable energy systems that combine clean electricity generation with large-scale energy storage.

For Brazil, the project supports broader decarbonization and electrification goals while positioning Fernando de Noronha as a regional model for sustainable island energy systems.

The initiative also highlights the growing role battery storage is expected to play in future renewable energy infrastructure as governments and utilities search for ways to expand renewable generation without compromising energy reliability.

As renewable energy deployment accelerates globally, hybrid projects integrating solar, wind, and battery technologies are likely to become increasingly important across both developed and emerging energy markets.
