Economic ties between South Africa and France are deepening as the two countries expand cooperation across investment, industrialisation, infrastructure, technology and the green economy.

Momentum has accelerated in 2026, with 30 French companies committing about R20.7 billion at the South Africa Investment Conference. French businesses have also established a significant operating presence across the country, supporting employment and investment in sectors ranging from manufacturing and energy to transport, financial services and infrastructure.

Key Overview

  • Thirty French companies pledged approximately R20.7 billion at the 2026 South Africa Investment Conference.
  • More than 480 French business establishments now operate in South Africa.
  • Recent government figures indicate French companies support close to 100,000 jobs in the country.
  • Bilateral trade was valued at roughly €3.2 billion in 2024.
  • Cooperation is expanding beyond traditional trade into industrialisation, technology, infrastructure and the green economy.
  • South Africa is seeking to use foreign investment to support jobs, skills development and broader economic growth.

French Investment Presence Continues to Expand

France has become one of South Africa’s most important economic partners, with French businesses establishing a large footprint across multiple industries.

Recent government figures indicate that there are now more than 480 French establishments operating in South Africa, supporting almost 100,000 jobs.

That represents a larger footprint than earlier estimates, which placed the number of French companies at around 400 and employment at approximately 65,000.

French firms are active across energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, transport and logistics, financial services, retail and other industries. Since 2019, French companies have invested an estimated R166 billion in South Africa, demonstrating the depth of the relationship.

The latest investment commitments provide further evidence of that momentum.

At the 2026 South Africa Investment Conference, 30 French companies pledged approximately R20.7 billion in new investments across a range of sectors.

Cooperation Is Moving Beyond Traditional Trade

The bilateral relationship is increasingly shifting from conventional trade toward deeper industrial and investment partnerships.

South African trade officials have highlighted opportunities in advanced manufacturing, technology, innovation, infrastructure and the green economy as major areas for future cooperation.

Bilateral trade between the two countries stood at approximately €3.2 billion in 2024, while investment flows have continued to broaden into new sectors.

One example is a R2 billion investment in a new malting facility in Gauteng, illustrating how foreign capital is being directed into local productive capacity rather than only financial investments.

The focus on industrial capacity is important for South Africa, which is seeking to increase local manufacturing, strengthen supply chains and create more jobs linked to value-added production.

Infrastructure and the Green Economy Take Centre Stage

Infrastructure is another major area of cooperation.

South Africa is pursuing large-scale investment in energy, water, transport, logistics and digital infrastructure as part of efforts to improve economic competitiveness and remove constraints to growth.

French companies have experience across many of these sectors, creating opportunities for partnerships involving both private capital and technical expertise.

The relationship is also becoming increasingly important in South Africa’s transition toward cleaner energy and lower-carbon industrial development.

During high-level engagements in 2026, the two countries identified green transition, innovation and skills development as priority areas for deeper cooperation.

These areas align with South Africa’s wider investment strategy, which seeks to attract capital into renewable energy, green hydrogen, infrastructure and industrial projects capable of supporting long-term growth.

Government Wants Investment to Translate Into Jobs

South African officials have emphasised that attracting investment is only one part of the strategy.

The government wants investment projects to translate into measurable economic benefits through job creation, skills transfer, local procurement and community development.

The country’s broader investment framework now places increasing emphasis on local content and skills development, particularly as the government attempts to reduce unemployment and strengthen domestic industrial capabilities.

Officials have also stressed the importance of improving the business environment, reducing unnecessary regulatory obstacles and increasing private-sector participation.

That approach reflects a broader policy objective: using foreign direct investment not simply as a source of capital, but as a tool for expanding productive capacity and employment.

A Broader Strategic Partnership Is Emerging

The economic relationship is being reinforced by stronger political cooperation.

In July 2026, South Africa and France agreed to deepen bilateral engagement through an expanded Joint Ministerial Commission, creating a broader framework for cooperation across economic and strategic issues.

The two countries are now seeking to translate that political relationship into practical investment partnerships.

For South Africa, French capital and expertise can support infrastructure development, industrialisation and the green transition. For French businesses, South Africa offers access to one of Africa’s largest and most diversified economies, along with opportunities across energy, manufacturing, infrastructure and financial services.

The R20.7 billion investment commitment therefore represents more than a single round of pledges. It is part of a broader shift toward deeper long-term economic integration between the two countries.
