African Water Facility’s Bold Leap: $500 Million Urban-Sanitation Fund Unveiled

Approximately one-third of Africa’s population, totaling around 1.3 billion individuals, lacks access to reliable water supplies, and about one-sixth of the population lacks basic hygiene services. Addressing this critical issue necessitates a significant financial commitment, with the World Bank estimating a requirement of $57 billion in annual investments.

In response to the growing demand for water and sanitation projects across the continent, the African Water Facility, a branch of the African Development Bank, is taking action. Established in 2004, the facility has primarily operated as a provider of grants. However, as traditional donor funding diminishes, the African Water Facility is adapting its strategy by introducing debt financing in certain cases. To facilitate this transformation, the facility is embarking on a mission to establish a $500 million Urban-Sanitation Fund.

Under the leadership of Mtchera Chirwa, the facility’s coordinator, this ambitious endeavor aims to secure private investment in order to promote long-term sustainability in the region. Since its inception, the African Water Facility has focused solely on grant provision. Yet, as Chirwa explains, the facility plans to broaden its scope and lend support to projects that promote sustainable sanitation solutions.

Africa faces a substantial challenge in addressing its water and sanitation needs. The Urban-Sanitation Fund, with a goal of raising $500 million over the course of a decade, seeks to address this issue comprehensively. The fund is expected to gather contributions from the African Development Bank, generous donors, and forward-thinking private investors.
