Quickmart has officially opened its initial public offering, giving investors an opportunity to buy into one of Kenya’s largest supermarket chains ahead of its planned Nairobi Securities Exchange listing.
LIVENSE market summarySee NSE data →The retailer is offering 2 billion existing ordinary shares at Sh7.50 each, placing the total value of the offer at Sh15 billion and implying a Sh30 billion valuation for the company. The offer opened on October 5 and is scheduled to close on October 30, with trading expected to begin on November 12.
Importantly, the transaction is an offer for sale rather than a capital raise. Quickmart is not issuing new shares and will not receive the IPO proceeds. The shares are being sold by Sokoni Retail Kenya Limited, its sole shareholder before the offer.
Key Overview
- Quickmart is offering 2 billion shares at Sh7.50 each, equal to 50% of its issued share capital.
- A fully subscribed offer would be worth Sh15 billion and imply a Sh30 billion market capitalisation.
- The IPO runs from October 5 to October 30, with NSE trading expected to start on November 12.
- Investors must apply for at least 500 shares, requiring a minimum investment of Sh3,750.
- The offer requires at least 75% subscription, equivalent to 1.5 billion shares, to proceed.
- IFC has conditionally committed up to $15 million, approximately Sh1.94 billion.
- Quickmart itself will receive none of the offer proceeds because the IPO consists entirely of existing shares.
Quickmart Opens the Offer to Public Investors
The 2 billion-share offer opened on October 5 at 9:00 a.m. East Africa Time and is scheduled to close at 5:00 p.m. on October 30.
At Sh7.50 per share, investors purchasing the minimum 500 shares will need Sh3,750. Applications above the minimum must be made in multiples of 100 shares, while no maximum application limit has been specified.
Every successful investor will need a valid Central Depository and Settlement account for the shares to be credited. Offer results and allocations are expected to be announced on November 6, with CDS accounts scheduled to be credited on November 11 before trading begins on November 12.
The company’s entire issued share capital of 4 billion ordinary shares is expected to be admitted to the NSE’s Main Investment Market Segment.
IPO Gives Existing Owners a Partial Exit
Although the transaction is described as an IPO, it will not inject new capital into Quickmart.
The offer consists entirely of existing shares being sold by Sokoni Retail Kenya Limited. If all 2 billion shares are sold, the selling shareholder will receive gross proceeds of Sh15 billion before transaction costs while retaining the other 50% of Quickmart.
Sokoni Retail Kenya is the investment vehicle through which Adenia-managed funds, the founders of Quickmart and Tumaini, and the group’s chief executive have held their interests. Quickmart’s ownership structure followed the combination of Quickmart and Tumaini, which helped create one of Kenya’s largest modern grocery retailers.
The listing therefore provides existing investors with a partial exit while creating a substantial public free float.
The final IPO terms also differ from the earlier intention-to-float announcement, which had contemplated an over-allotment option. The launched offer has no over-allotment option.

Minimum Subscription Sets a Key Threshold
The IPO will only proceed if investors subscribe for at least 75% of the shares on offer.
That means valid applications must cover at least 1.5 billion shares, worth Sh11.25 billion at the offer price, by the October 30 closing date. If the minimum subscription condition is not met, the offer will be cancelled and application funds returned without interest.
LIVENSE market summarySee NSE data →The offer is also not underwritten, meaning there is no underwriter committed to purchasing shares left unsubscribed by investors.
For allocation, Kenyan retail investors have been assigned 20% of the offer, Kenyan institutional investors 35%, investors from the East African Community 12%, foreign investors 20%, and IFC up to 13%.
IFC Could Become a Major Shareholder
IFC has conditionally committed to purchase up to $15 million worth of Quickmart shares, equivalent to approximately Sh1.94 billion.
The commitment would represent about 13% of the shares being offered and roughly 6.5% of Quickmart’s total issued share capital, subject to final approval by IFC’s board.
The commitment should not be interpreted as an endorsement or guarantee of the investment. Investors remain responsible for assessing Quickmart’s valuation, financial performance and risks independently.
Quickmart Brings a Large Retailer to the NSE
Quickmart has expanded from a single store established in Nakuru in 2006 to a network of 72 outlets across 16 counties. Before launching the IPO, the company described itself as Kenya’s second-largest modern grocery retailer by store count and turnover, with an estimated 15% share of the modern grocery market.
The business recorded Sh50.4 billion in revenue in FY2025, while reported profit after tax stood at Sh1.51 billion.
Quickmart projects FY2026 revenue of Sh58.2 billion and has indicated a projected dividend of Sh0.50 per share, equivalent to a 6.7% yield at the IPO price. These remain company forecasts rather than guaranteed outcomes.
The listing will therefore give NSE investors exposure to a large homegrown consumer-retail business, but the offer’s success will ultimately depend on whether investors view the Sh7.50 price as attractive relative to Quickmart’s earnings, growth prospects and risks.
