India’s National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) plans to accelerate investments in the country’s climate sector through its India-Japan Fund (IJF) by deploying the fund’s remaining capital over the next 18 to 24 months.

The India-Japan Fund is NIIF’s first bilateral investment fund and has secured $600 million in commitments. The Government of India contributes 49% of the target corpus, while the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) contributes the remaining 51%.

The fund is managed by NIIF Limited, with JBIC IG, a subsidiary of JBIC, supporting efforts to promote Japanese investments in India.

Climate Investments Take Centre Stage

$600 million India–Japan Fund supports mobility, energy efficiency, clean energy and recycling.

The India-Japan Fund focuses on environmental sustainability and low carbon emission strategies, targeting investments across mobility, energy efficiency, energy transition and waste recycling.

The fund has already invested in Ather Energy, Eka Mobility and Mahindra Last Mile Mobility, reflecting its strategy of supporting businesses involved in India’s clean energy and sustainable mobility transition.

Since reaching its final close in 2023, the fund has already deployed roughly 40% of its total committed capital.

India-Japan Investment Corridor

According to Krishna Kumar, Partner at the India-Japan Fund, the fund is also pursuing opportunities created through the India-Japan corridor, where Japanese companies can contribute expertise and technical know-how to the Indian market.

The strategy also includes investing alongside Japanese companies operating in India.

“From an overall portfolio perspective, we expect climate-focused investments to account for around two-thirds, with the remaining one-third in the India-Japan corridor,” Kumar said.

The allocation highlights the fund’s emphasis on climate-related investments while supporting stronger commercial collaboration between Indian and Japanese businesses.

The Government of India has committed $3 billion and serves as the anchor investor.

Other investors include the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Temasek, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, AustralianSuper and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

The India-Japan Fund represents one of the investment platforms through which NIIF is supporting infrastructure and climate-related investments.

Focus on Sustainable Growth

With total commitments of $600 million, the India-Japan Fund is designed to channel long-term capital into climate-focused sectors that support environmental sustainability and low carbon emission strategies across India. As NIIF’s first bilateral fund, it combines financial backing from the Government of India and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation while promoting stronger investment collaboration between the two countries.

The fund’s investment priorities include energy transition, mobility, energy efficiency and waste recycling, sectors that are expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting India’s low-carbon development. It has already invested in Ather Energy, Eka Mobility and Mahindra Last Mile Mobility, reflecting its strategy of backing businesses that contribute to cleaner transportation and sustainable infrastructure. Alongside its climate focus, the fund also seeks to strengthen the India-Japan corridor by supporting opportunities where Japanese companies can bring technical expertise to the Indian market or invest alongside Indian businesses.

Outlook

The National Investment and Infrastructure Fund’s plan to deploy the remaining capital under the India-Japan Fund over the next 18 to 24 months reflects its continued focus on expanding climate-related investments in India. With around two-thirds of the portfolio expected to be allocated to climate-focused investments, the fund will continue prioritising energy transition, mobility, energy efficiency and waste recycling, while the remaining investments will support opportunities through the India-Japan corridor. As deployment continues, the fund is expected to advance environmental sustainability and low carbon emission strategies, strengthen collaboration between Indian and Japanese businesses, and support the growth of sectors aligned with India’s evolving climate and infrastructure priorities.
