Fixed Income Fund Fees and Minimums: Compare Total Costs and Entry Minimums
If you are searching for the best fixed income funds in Kenya, looking at the advertised return is only part of the picture. You also need to understand how much it costs to invest and how much money you need to get started.
A fund with a high return may not necessarily be the cheapest option. Similarly, a low minimum investment does not automatically make a fund better.
So, what should you compare?
What are fixed income fund fees?
Fixed income funds pool money from many investors and invest it in interest-generating assets such as government securities, corporate bonds, Treasury bills, deposits and other fixed-income instruments.
Because a professional fund manager manages the portfolio, investors pay fees for the service.
The most important fee to check is the annual management fee.
1. Management fee
This is the fee charged for managing the fund and is normally expressed as a percentage per year.
For example, the current published information for Etica Fixed Income Fund (KES) states an annual management fee of 2.0%. Kuza Fixed Income Fund also lists a 2.0% annual management fee, while GenAfrica Fixed Income Fund's February 2026 fact sheet lists 2% management fees.
Quick tip: A 2% fee does not mean 2% is simply deducted from your account every year as a separate bill. Fund fees are generally reflected in the fund's valuation and performance. Always check whether a quoted return is before or after fees.
For example, Kuza states that its quoted yield is net of management fees and gross of withholding tax. GenAfrica similarly states that its reported return is net of fees and gross of tax.
- 1Initial or entry fees
An initial fee is charged when you put money into a fund.
Not all funds charge one.
For example, GenAfrica's February 2026 Fixed Income Fund fact sheet states no initial fees, while Etica's published fund information lists a 2% management fee but does not list an initial investment fee on its product brochure.
This is important because an entry fee can reduce the amount of money actually invested.
Example: If a fund charged a 2% entry fee and you invested KSh100,000, KSh2,000 would represent the fee and KSh98,000 would be invested, assuming the fee is applied directly to the investment.
Always confirm the current fee schedule before investing.
3. Other charges
Don't stop at the management fee.
Depending on the fund, there may be other costs associated with administration, trustees, custody or withdrawals. The Capital Markets Authority (CMA) provides investor guidance encouraging investors to understand the fees and other costs associated with collective investment schemes before investing.
The golden rule: Compare the total cost, not just one fee.
How much do you need to start?

Minimum investments vary from one fund to another.
Here is a snapshot of three Kenyan fixed income funds based on their published information:
| Fund | Minimum initial investment | Management fee | Other published information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Etica Fixed Income Fund (KES) | KSh100 | 2.0% p.a. | No lock-in period |
| Kuza Fixed Income Fund (KES) | KSh1,000 | 2.0% p.a. | KSh50 minimum top-up |
| GenAfrica Fixed Income Fund | KSh500,000 | 2.0% p.a. | No initial fee; 6-month lock-in |
Etica's March 2026 brochure states a KSh100 minimum investment and no lock-in period.
Kuza's current product page states a KSh1,000 minimum initial investment, KSh50 minimum top-up and a 2% annual management fee.
GenAfrica's February 2026 fact sheet states a KSh500,000 minimum initial investment, 2% management fee, no initial fee and a six-month lock-in period.
Important: These figures can change. Check the latest fund fact sheet or official product page before making an investment.

Does a lower minimum mean a better fund?
No.
A lower minimum simply means more people can access the fund with a smaller amount.
Consider this:
You have KSh10,000 to invest.
- Etica's published minimum of KSh100 means you meet the minimum.
- Kuza's KSh1,000 minimum also means you meet the minimum.
- GenAfrica's KSh500,000 minimum means you do not meet its published entry requirement.
That doesn't make Etica or Kuza automatically better. You still need to compare their investment strategy, risk, liquidity, performance and fees.
What should you compare before investing?

Alt text:Infographic showing eight key factors to compare before investing: minimum investment, top-up, fees, withdrawals, returns, strategy, and risk.
Use this quick checklist:
☐ Minimum investmentHow much do you need to start?
☐ Minimum top-upHow much can you add later?
☐ Management feeWhat percentage is charged annually?
☐ Initial feeIs there a charge when you invest?
☐ Withdrawal conditionsCan you access your money immediately, or is there a lock-in period?
☐ Published returnIs the return quoted before or after management fees?
☐ Investment strategyDoes the fund invest mainly in government securities, corporate debt, deposits or a combination?
☐ RiskCould the value of your investment fall?
Which fund is cheapest?
It would be misleading to declare one fund the best fixed income fund to invest in based only on the figures above.
All three funds listed here currently publish a 2% annual management fee, but their entry requirements and access conditions differ significantly.
Etica has the lowest published entry minimum among these three, while Kuza requires KSh1,000 and GenAfrica requires KSh500,000. But investors should also consider liquidity, investment horizon, risk and portfolio strategy.
For example, GenAfrica's published fact sheet says investors can choose to withdraw interest periodically or reinvest it, while its fund has a six-month lock-in period.
What about a fixed income fund returns Kenya calculator?
A fixed income fund returns Kenya calculator can help you estimate how much an investment could potentially grow over time. Etica provides an online calculator, while Kuza also provides an investment calculator where users can enter an initial investment, monthly top-up, projected yield and investment duration.
These calculators are useful for planning, but they are not guarantees of future returns.
Before you invest, remember:
The cheapest fund is not necessarily the best fund, and the fund with the highest return is not necessarily the best fit for you.
Compare the fees + minimum investment + risk + liquidity + investment strategy + historical performance together.
That gives you a much clearer picture when choosing among fixed income funds in Kenya.
