Ford Motor Company has unveiled the Ford Fathom, a new mid-size electric pickup truck designed to make electric vehicles more affordable as competition intensifies across the global EV market.
The automaker said the Ford Fathom will be priced at just over US$28,000, with the Canadian price set at $38,690 after the federal electric vehicle rebate of $4,000. Pre-orders are scheduled to open in early 2027, with customer deliveries expected to begin in autumn 2027.
The launch forms part of Ford’s strategy to broaden electric vehicle adoption by targeting mainstream buyers looking for more affordable alternatives.
Ford Targets Affordable EV Market
The Ford Fathom is expected to become the first model in a new family of electric vehicles built on Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) Platform.
The company said the platform has been designed to reduce manufacturing costs while delivering modern technology, improved efficiency and greater practicality.
The launch follows Ford’s decision to abandon plans for an all-electric version of the F-150 Lightning, shifting its focus toward lower-cost electric vehicles capable of reaching a wider customer base.
Ford Chief Executive Officer James Farley previously described the strategy as the company’s “Model T moment,” drawing comparisons with the iconic vehicle that made automobile ownership affordable for millions of consumers.
“This is a Model T moment for us at Ford, a chance to bring in a new family of vehicles to the world that offer incredible technology, efficiency, space and features,” Farley said.
New Platform Adds Technology and Efficiency

The Ford Fathom will be manufactured using Ford’s new assembly-tree production process at the Louisville Assembly Plant.
According to Ford, every vehicle will include BlueCruise hands-free highway driving technology, bi-directional power capability, embedded Apple Maps, a large high-resolution touchscreen, a digital key, and a front trunk (frunk).
The company also said the pickup will offer more passenger space than the Toyota RAV4, positioning it as a practical option for both personal and commercial use.

Competition Intensifies Across the EV Market
Ford’s latest strategy comes as competition continues to intensify from global electric vehicle manufacturers, particularly Tesla and China’s BYD.
Earlier this year, BYD overtook Tesla as the world’s largest electric vehicle seller, while Chinese-made EVs also began entering the Canadian market.
According to Dan Park, Chief Executive Officer of used vehicle marketplace Clutch, Ford’s new pricing strategy reflects growing pressure from Chinese manufacturers that have significantly reduced battery and manufacturing costs.
He noted that the average used pickup truck in Canada costs approximately $47,000, while a used Ford F-150 Lightning sells for around $65,000, compared with roughly $44,000 for a used petrol-powered Ford F-150.
“A new electric pickup around the $40,000 mark would therefore compete much more directly with the trucks consumers are already shopping for,” Park said.
He added that Chinese manufacturers have demonstrated how lower battery costs and manufacturing efficiencies can make electric vehicles significantly more affordable.
“They have demonstrated how lower battery and manufacturing costs can bring EV prices down significantly. That broader cost pressure is pushing established automakers like Ford to rethink vehicle size, battery costs, and manufacturing efficiency,” he said.
Outlook
The launch of the Ford Fathom signals Ford’s renewed focus on affordability as a key driver of electric vehicle adoption. By introducing a mid-size pickup priced below $40,000, the company aims to attract mainstream consumers who have been deterred by the high cost of existing electric trucks. As competition from BYD, Tesla and other global manufacturers continues to intensify, affordable models built on lower-cost platforms are expected to play an increasingly important role in expanding EV adoption while helping traditional automakers remain competitive in the evolving electric mobility market.
