Equinor and Orlen have signed a three-year crude oil supply agreement starting in September 2026, strengthening energy security and supply stability across Europe. Under the deal, Orlen will receive nearly 5 million to more than 9 million tonnes of Norwegian crude annually, potentially covering up to 25% of its yearly crude demand and supporting its refining operations in Poland, the Czech Republic and Lithuania.

Key Overview

  • Companies: Equinor and Orlen
  • Agreement: Three-year crude oil supply deal
  • Start: September 2026
  • Annual volume: Nearly 5 million to more than 9 million tonnes
  • Potential share of Orlen demand: Up to 25%
  • Main crude source: Johan Sverdrup field
  • Markets supplied: Poland, Czech Republic and Lithuania
  • Region: Norwegian Continental Shelf

Equinor and Orlen Secure Long-Term Crude Oil Supply

Norway’s Equinor has signed a three-year agreement with Polish energy company Orlen to supply crude oil from the Johan Sverdrup field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, beginning in September 2026.

Under the Equinor Orlen crude oil supply deal, Orlen will receive between nearly 5 million to over 9 million tonnes of crude oil each year, depending on its refinery requirements and market conditions. At the upper end, the volumes could represent up to one-quarter of Orlen’s annual crude oil demand.

The agreement is designed to strengthen the security and stability of crude supplies to Orlen’s refineries in Poland, the Czech Republic and Lithuania.

Johan Sverdrup Oil Forms the Core of the Agreement

Crude from the Johan Sverdrup oil field will form the basis of the deliveries. Located in the North Sea, Johan Sverdrup is currently the highest-producing oil field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and accounts for approximately one-third of Norway’s oil production, according to the companies.

The agreement also gives Equinor the option to supply Orlen with other crude grades produced from fields across the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

This flexibility allows Orlen to adjust its supply according to refinery operations and changing market conditions.

Deal Strengthens European Energy Security

The agreement comes as European energy companies continue to focus on securing reliable and diversified sources of energy.

For Orlen, long-term access to Norwegian crude oil provides greater predictability for its refining operations. The company operates refineries and related energy infrastructure serving markets across Central Europe and the Baltic region.

Orlen President Ireneusz Fąfara said the agreement would strengthen the group’s access to stable Norwegian crude supplies and support regional energy security.

The contract does not mean that all of Orlen’s crude will come from Norway. However, potentially covering up to 25% of its requirements through a multi-year agreement gives the company a significant additional source of predictable supply.

Flexible Volumes Give Orlen Greater Market Control

A key feature of the agreement is its flexibility.

Orlen will be able to receive volumes ranging from nearly 5 million tonnes to more than 9 million tonnes annually. The exact amount can be adjusted based on refinery requirements and market conditions.

If deliveries remained at the upper limit for all three years, the cumulative volume could exceed 27 million tonnes. However, this is only an arithmetic projection based on the announced maximum and is not a guaranteed contractual volume.

The commercial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.

Norwegian Crude to Supply Three European Markets

Norwegian crude oil supply routes from Norway to Orlen refineries in Poland, Lithuania and the Czech Republic.

The crude will be used across Orlen’s refining operations in Poland, Lithuania and the Czech Republic.

The arrangement therefore connects Norwegian offshore oil production with refining and energy markets across Central Europe and the Baltic region.

For Orlen, securing supply from Norway could help reduce exposure to disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions, changing trade routes and other international oil-market uncertainties.

Johan Sverdrup Remains Strategically Important

The agreement highlights the continued importance of Johan Sverdrup to Norway’s oil industry and European energy supply.

The field’s large production capacity allows it to support significant long-term supply arrangements with European energy companies.

The platforms at Johan Sverdrup are also powered by electricity from onshore renewable sources, helping to reduce emissions associated with oil production.

Equinor and Orlen already cooperate in areas including Norwegian Continental Shelf exploration, natural gas supplies and lower-carbon initiatives.

Outlook

The new agreement provides Orlen with a more predictable source of crude while allowing flexibility to respond to market and operational changes.

For Equinor, the deal reinforces Norway’s role as an important energy supplier to Europe.

As European refiners continue managing geopolitical and supply-chain risks, long-term agreements such as this could become increasingly important in maintaining stable energy supplies.
