The Burns Brothers and Strathmore University Business School have launched Creative Economy 101, a digital learning programme designed to help Kenyan creators understand the commercial systems behind sustainable creative careers and businesses.
The KSh8,500 self-paced course contains seven modules and 26 lectures covering intellectual property, platforms, infrastructure, pricing, revenue, policy and business ownership. It is the first major programme delivered through the Creative Economy Africa Institute, whose long-term ambition is to support the creation of one million jobs across Africa by 2035.

Course Turns Creative Talent Into Business Knowledge
Creative Economy 101 has been developed to address a persistent problem across African creative industries: creators may possess strong artistic ability but lack the commercial knowledge needed to protect, price and scale their work.
According to the official course platform, participants move through modules covering the business case for Kenya’s creative economy, talent development, infrastructure, platform control, intellectual property, creative enterprise and public policy.
The curriculum includes practical areas such as rights ownership, royalties, catalogues, pricing, negotiation, revenue diversification and distribution. These topics are important because creative professionals increasingly need to operate as entrepreneurs capable of managing contracts, audiences, platforms and intellectual property.
The programme is available through browsers on phones, tablets and computers. Participants receive immediate access, complete assessments as they progress and earn a Strathmore University co-certified credential after meeting the course requirements.
Institute Targets One Million Jobs by 2035
Creative Economy 101 is the first initiative under the Creative Economy Africa Institute, established by The Burns Brothers and Strathmore University Business School.
The partners’ institutional agreement combines academic training and research with industry experience, entrepreneurship, innovation and policy engagement. The institute plans to begin with Kenya before extending its programmes and partnerships across Africa.
Its one-million-jobs ambition reflects a broader effort to move the creative sector beyond isolated individual success stories. Reaching that target will require creators to build formal enterprises, employ teams, retain ownership of valuable intellectual property and gain access to financing and regional or global markets.
Training alone will not create employment at that scale. The institute will also need measurable links between education, business formation, access to capital, distribution infrastructure and demand for African creative products.
Seven Modules Cover the Creative Value Chain
The programme begins by examining the economic case for Kenya’s creative industries before moving into workforce development, production infrastructure and the role of digital platforms.
A dedicated intellectual-property module focuses on rights, royalties, catalogues and ownership. Another module addresses the shift from creator to business owner through pricing, negotiation and multiple revenue streams.
The final section explores policy and governance, recognising that creative businesses operate within legal, tax, copyright and institutional frameworks. This makes the programme relevant not only to artists, but also to entrepreneurs, students, educators, investors, policymakers and development professionals.
The course uses Kenya as its primary context while drawing lessons from international examples, including South Korea’s talent-development systems, Nollywood’s distribution model and the platform strategies used by global streaming companies.

Africa’s Opportunity Extends Beyond Entertainment
Africa’s creative economy is gaining global visibility through music, film, fashion, gaming, digital content and design. A 2026 assessment of the sector projected that the continent’s creative economy could be worth $200 billion by 2030, while also highlighting weak infrastructure, limited finance and intellectual-property losses as major barriers.
Kenya already has a large base of creative enterprises, but many remain informal and struggle to access conventional financing. This limits their ability to hire employees, invest in equipment, build distribution systems or retain professional legal and financial support.
The frequently cited estimate that Africa could generate $20 billion annually and create more than 20 million jobs should be interpreted carefully. The underlying UNESCO research applies specifically to Africa’s film and audiovisual industries rather than the entire creative economy.
That distinction does not diminish the sector’s potential. Instead, it demonstrates how one segment of the broader creative economy could generate substantial employment and economic value if supported with skills, finance, infrastructure and stronger intellectual-property systems.
NCBA Sponsorship Expands Access for Creators
NCBA has committed to sponsor ten creators through its Elev8 programme to participate in the inaugural Creative Economy 101 cohort. The sponsorship reduces the cost barrier for selected participants while connecting the course to an existing platform supporting music and creative entrepreneurship.
According to coverage of the programme launch, the initiative has also received support from figures in government, education, film and music.
Such partnerships can strengthen the programme by linking classroom learning with professional networks and practical opportunities. Creators require more than technical talent; they need access to mentors, collaborators, financing, customers and markets.
Success Will Depend on Measurable Outcomes
Creative Economy 101 offers a practical starting point for creators who want to understand how value is generated, protected and monetised. Its digital format also gives the programme the potential to reach participants beyond established creative hubs.
The larger test will be whether graduates use the training to negotiate better contracts, retain more intellectual property, build sustainable companies and create employment. The institute’s one-million-jobs target will ultimately be judged through measurable business growth rather than enrolment numbers alone.
If the programme successfully connects knowledge with finance, policy, infrastructure and market access, it could help more African creators convert cultural influence into durable economic value.
